LONDON – Bruno Fernandes confirmed on June 3 he rejected a huge offer from Saudi Arabia to stay at Manchester United, saying he wanted to 'continue to play at the highest level'.
Speaking at a Portugal camp before their Nations League semi-final against Germany in Munich, he revealed he received an 'exciting offer' from Al Hilal but wanted to be part of Ruben Amorim's rebuild at Old Trafford.
Reports said Al Hilal were willing to pay United up to £100 million (S$174 million) for the 30-year-old.
'The president of Al Hilal called me and asked me if I wanted to move there,' Fernandes said.
'I talked to the gaffer (Amorim) and he asked me not to go. Man United said they didn't want to sell me. They said if I wanted to go I could but they didn't need the money.'
The midfielder also said a transfer would have been 'easy' with several Portuguese players already in Saudi Arabia, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves, but added: 'I want to play at the highest possible level.
'I want to play major competitions. I know I still can and I want to be happy doing the thing I love the most. This is how I see football and I'm passionate about football and this is the decision I've made.'
United endured their worst finish of the Premier League era, finishing 15th. They also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham.
Fernandes, who is United's captain, was one of the few players to emerge with credit from a disastrous season, scoring 19 goals and making 19 assists across all competitions.
Former United skipper Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, said the development was 'significant'.
'United getting that level of money, for someone of Bruno's age, obviously, you couldn't say that it would have been a bad deal,' he said.
'But, on the other hand, Manchester United's star player – only player at times – for the last four, five, six years, has been Bruno Fernandes. He's so important.
'To turn that money down (Fernandes was expected to earn a huge salary as well) at a point where Manchester United are at their lowest ebb and say, 'No, I want to fight through this, I want to come out and achieve things', I think it says a lot about him as a person, as a character.'
United are expected to be busy in the transfer market as Amorim reshapes his under-performing squad.
The club have already signed Brazil forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are being heavily linked with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo.
Departures could include Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. AFP

In Group I, Norway lead the standings with nine points after three matches. Italy were playing their first match in the qualifying campaign. The soaking wet home crowd had reason to cheer after 14 minutes when Alexander Sorloth timed his run perfectly onto a through ball from Antonio Nusa and slotted it home from close range. Nusa lit up the night with a moment of brilliance after 34 minutes, controlling a pass with a slick first touch, bursting past two Italian defenders with a dazzling run, and drilling it in from the edge of the box. The first-half rout continued when another through ball from Martin Odegaard found an unmarked Erling Haaland, who rounded Italy keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to score Norway's third just before the break. The continued pouring rain cooled the match down in second-half with Norway coming closest with substitute Patrick Berg sending a screamer into the post just after the hour mark, but no more goals were scored. Late equaliser sees North Macedonia hold Belgium to draw

Ezgjan Alioski scored a superb goal as he latched onto a cross from Darko Churlinov that floated over his head before he met it with perfect precision to volley home. Maxim De Cupyer's first half goal had Belgium in the lead as they played their first game of the campaign for places at the 2026 finals in North America. North Macedonia have five points, with one win and two draws from their opening three games, while Wales took over the lead in the standings after they beat Liechtenstein 3-0 at home on Friday to move to seven points. De Cupyer bundled the ball into the net in the 28th minute after Romelu Lukaku's initial effort had been blocked by the heels of a defender. North Macedonia had a chance one minute earlier to open the scoring as Eljif Elmas turned into space in the penalty area and struck the ball against the far post. The rebound fell for Alioski with an open goal in front of him, but he hit the other post in a major missed opportunity. Elmas had the ball in the Belgian net two minutes into the second half but his shot took a slight deflection off teammate Bojan Ilievski, who was in an offside position and VAR chalked off the potential. But the home side finally got rewards for their efforts with Alioski's goal keeping alive their hopes. The group winners qualify for next year's finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States and the runners-up advances to the playoffs. Far right Proud Boys seek $129 million over US Capitol riot convictions
Former Proud Boys leaders Joseph Biggs and Enrique Tarrio speak to reporters on Feb 21 outside the Capitol in Washington. PHOTO: REUTERS Far right Proud Boys seek $129 million over US Capitol riot convictions MIAMI, Florida - Five members of the far right Proud Boys convicted of orchestrating the US Capitol riot filed a lawsuit on June 6 seeking US$100 million (S$129 million) in damages for alleged violations of their constitutional rights. The suit, filed in a federal court in Florida, claims the five were victims of 'corrupt and politically motivated persecution' intended to punish political allies of President Donald Trump. Among the five plaintiffs is former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who was sentenced to 22 years in prison for directing the Jan 6, 2021 assault on the Capitol by Trump supporters seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 election won by Democrat Joe Biden. Tarrio, whose sentence for seditious conspiracy was the longest doled out to Capitol rioters, was among the more than 1,500 Trump supporters pardoned by the Republican president on his first day in office. In their suit, the Proud Boys members said they were victims of 'egregious and systemic abuse of the legal system and the United States Constitution to punish and oppress political allies of President Trump.' They accused government prosecutors of 'evidence tampering, witness intimidation, violations of attorney-client privilege, and placing spies to report on trial strategy.' It said their convictions were 'the modern equivalent of placing one's enemies' heads on a spike outside the town wall as a warning to any who would think to challenge the status quo.' The Proud Boys members demanded a jury trial and punitive damages of US$100 million. The Trump administration agreed in May to pay nearly US$5 million to the family of a woman shot dead by a police officer during the Jan 6 attack on the Capitol. Ashli Babbitt, 35, was shot as she tried to climb through a window leading to the House Speaker's lobby during the assault on Congress by Trump supporters. Ms Babbitt's estate filed a wrongful death suit last year seeking US$30 million. The case had been scheduled to go on trial, but the Justice Department reversed course after Mr Trump won the November 2024 election and entered into settlement talks. The Capitol assault, which left more than 140 police officers injured, followed a fiery speech by then-president Trump to tens of thousands of his supporters near the White House in which he repeated his false claims that he won the 2020 race. He then encouraged the crowd to march on Congress. AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
