MBZUAI begins new academic year with largest-ever cohort of over 400 students
Abu Dhabi [UAE], August 17 (ANI/WAM): Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has welcomed its largest cohort for its Fall 2025 intake, enrolling 403 new students. This includes its inaugural undergraduate class, new graduate cohorts in existing programmes in Computer Science, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Robotics, and the first intakes into the Master of Science in Statistics & Data Science and Master in Applied Artificial Intelligence. This semester received more than 8,000 applications across the university's Bachelor and graduate programmes, yielding an acceptance rate of 5 per cent, and reinforcing the university's prestigious position and ability to attract the best talent in the UAE and from around the world. Timothy Baldwin, MBZUAI Provost and Professor of Natural Language Processing, said, 'This year, MBZUAI welcomes our largest cohort of graduate students alongside our inaugural undergraduate class. Artificial intelligence is transforming the world at a pace that vastly outstrips traditional education models. To realise its full global potential, MBZUAI invests heavily in reviewing and updating our programmes to reflect modern AI research methodology and workflows, based on our bleeding-edge AI research credentials and grounded in societal and industrial needs. As a young institution, MBZUAI has already earned a place among the world's top 10 AI universities based on our research credentials. With the introduction of our undergraduate and Master's in Applied AI programmes, we continue to build world-leading programmes aligned with the UAE's National Strategy for AI 2031 and supporting Abu Dhabi's rapidly growing AI ecosystem."The newly launched Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence programme offers two streams, AI for Business and AI for Engineering, combining technical rigor with leadership, hands-on entrepreneurship, and in-situ industry experience. PM Modi to inaugurate UER-II, Dwarka Expressway, today: What to know about the mega highway projects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Sunday inaugurate two major national highway projects worth nearly ₹11,000 crore in Rohini, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across the national capital region. Narendra Modi to inaugurate Dwarka Expressway and UER-II projects(ANI, PTI) According to the Prime Minister's Office, the projects — the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) — have been developed under a comprehensive decongestion plan for Delhi. The ceremony is scheduled around 12:30 pm in Rohini, where Modi will also inspect both projects. 'These initiatives reflect Prime Minister Modi's vision of creating world-class infrastructure that enhances ease of living and ensures seamless mobility,' the PMO said in a statement on Saturday. What are the key projects The Prime Minister will inaugurate the 76-km Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), designed as Delhi's third Ring Road, at an estimated cost of ₹6,445 crore. He will also open the 29-km Dwarka Expressway, including its Delhi section and tunnel access to Indira Gandhi International Airport. Together, these projects are expected to reduce travel time from Noida to IGI Airport and ease congestion on Delhi's Ring Road, NH-48, NH-44, and the Barapullah elevated corridor. According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Modi will flag off four of the five packages of UER-II, connecting Mahipalpur near IGI Airport to Alipur in North Delhi. Meanwhile, phases three and four of the Dwarka Expressway, including a 5.1-km tunnel linking the road directly to IGI Airport will also be unveiled. 'These two roads will significantly reduce congestion in and around Delhi and NCR,' a senior NHAI official said. UER-II Length: 75.71 km (54.21 km in Delhi, 21.50 km in Haryana). Cost: ₹ 6,445 crore. 6,445 crore. Packages: Five in total; four being inaugurated today. The newly finished highway project will provide faster access from Gurugram, west and south Delhi to NH-44, Chandigarh, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir, bypassing Dhaula Kuan and the city's ring roads. Built using about 10 lakh metric tons of inert material recovered through biomining of legacy landfill waste in Delhi, this project also marks a step towards sustainability. UER-II will link to the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, starting near Akshardham temple, enabling faster routes from Haryana and Rajasthan towards Dehradun. A new 65 km highway from Tronica City to the under-construction FNG Expressway has also been approved. In future, the corridor will connect five major NCR expressways: Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Meerut, Noida-Greater Noida, DND-Faridabad, and Yamuna Expressways. Dwarka Expressway Delhi stretch: 10.1 km, including the tunnel to IGI Airport. Haryana stretch: 29 km between Mahipalpur and Kherki Daula on NH-48, inaugurated in March 2024. The Dwarka Expressway, which spans a total of 29 kilometres, has been developed in two parts across Delhi and Haryana. The Delhi stretch, at 10.1 kilometres, includes a 5.1-kilometre tunnel that directly connects the corridor to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, providing faster and easier access for air travellers. The Haryana section, covering 29 kilometres between Mahipalpur and Kherki Daula on National Highway-48, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in March 2024. Once fully operational, the expressway is expected to ease congestion on the busy Delhi-Gurugram route, significantly improving connectivity for commuters from western Delhi and surrounding NCR suburbs.

'US Thinks They Can Boss Around': Top Economist Jeffrey Sachs Slams Trump Tariffs On India
US economist Jeffrey Sachs has criticised President Donald Trump for slapping hefty tariffs on India, denouncing the policy as both "stupid" and saying it "serves no purpose". Speaking to ANI, Sachs said Trump's move reflects hostility toward the BRICS alliance of India, China, Russia, Brazil and South Africa. "This makes no sense. It's not true. It's failing. Putting the surcharge on India was as stupid as it could be from any norm. It serves no purpose," he remarked. Sachs described Trump as "delusional" and blasted Washington's long-standing habit of exercising global dominance. "The US has exercised its dominant power for so long, they think they can boss every other part of the world around," he said. According to Sachs, the 50% duties slapped on Indian imports, triggered by New Delhi's oil trade with Russia, are not only damaging to America's own economy but also breach global rules. "Everything about the tariffs is wrong. It's destructive for the US economy. It violates international law. It's a breakdown of our political system. Trump's policies are doomed to fail," he warned. The economist also advised India to take a cautious view of Washington, arguing that New Delhi's long-term interests will not be safeguarded by leaning on the US for defence or trade. "US politicians don't care at all about India. Please understand this. India is not going to reap long-term security by siding with the United States in the Quad against China. India is a great power that has an independent standing in the world," Sachs said. Instead, he pointed to China, Russia and Brazil as India's "real partners," cautioning against the belief that India could seamlessly substitute China in global supply chains. Even if India aids in diversifying US sourcing, Sachs said, it should not expect a "great trade relationship" with Washington. He has previously called Trump's tariffs "unconstitutional," arguing they expose deep flaws in America's economic and foreign strategy.
