Old queen of Ranthambore defies time to mate
Jaipur: A queen past her prime chuffed somewhere beyond the lantana. A young suitor followed. The scrub and dust of Ranthambore's Zone 6 bore witness Saturday evening to a spectacle even veteran trackers blinked at — the national park's oldest living tigress T-39, aka Noor, mating at an age when most big cats have long hung up their claws. Estimated at 17 to 18 years old, Noor already holds the Ranthambore record for breeding at the oldest age ever seen in the wild. In 2022, she produced a litter — the ninth of her life — defying the norm that tigresses stop breeding by 12 or 13. In May 2023, conservation biologist Dharmendra Khandal saw her last litter weak and emaciated, her udder dried up. Yet here she was — glowing coat, canines intact — mating with T-101, with reports she had also paired with another male days earlier. "Such mating at this age has not been observed in the wild before," former honorary wildlife warden Balendu Singh said. "She remains healthy. At present, she is the oldest living tigress in the wild without intervention." Noor's longevity and reproductive fire point to formidable genetics. She is the daughter of Old Sultanpur female T-13 — known as Binda. "Her mother reached 18.5 years without support until she disappeared in Oct 2023," Khandal said. "But the maximum breeding age I've personally observed in the wild is that of Noor in Ranthambore." The mating may never bear fruit. "Not a cat in hell's chance," said a veterinary officer, adding there's no documented case of a tigress birthing at or after 17 even in captivity. But in the wild, as Khandal put it, there's always "a rare push against nature's limits". Sometimes it's male pressure, sometimes it's her choice. "The desire of an older female cannot be denied," Khandal said. Noor had shown that the wild has its own clock — and she still keeps the time. Ayodhya pilgrimage for senior citizens
Lucknow: MLA Rajeshwar Singh fulfilled his promise to senior citizens by organising a pilgrimage to Ayodhya for 60 devotees, primarily elderly women. This initiative, part of the 'Ramrath-Shravan Ayodhya Yatra', marked its 45th successful journey on Sunday. The journey, which provided free transportation, meals, and other necessities, was a response to a request made on Aug 2 by an elderly woman from the village. Upon reaching Ayodhya, the devotees were overwhelmed with emotion as they visited the sacred site of Ram Lalla. As a token of appreciation, the MLA gifted sarees to all women pilgrims. Pavithra Utsavams conclude at Kanaka Durga temple in Vijayawada
Vijayawada: The three-day Pavithra Utsavams at Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam concluded on Sunday with the grand Poornahuti ritual, drawing thousands of devotees to Indrakiladri. The special celebrations, held from August 8 to 10, coincided with a Shravana Adivaram (Sunday in the holy Telugu month Shravana), adding to the festive fervour as devotees from across the Telugu states flocked to the temple to seek the blessings of Goddess Kanakadurga. Temple Executive Officer V.K. Seenanayak and his wife participated in the Poornahuti ritual and offered a variety of herbs in the Homa Gundam (holy fire). Sthana Charya Sri Shiva Prasad Sharma, Deputy Chief Priest Sri Kota Prasad, and Vedic scholars led the rituals with traditional chanting. From early morning, heavy crowds thronged the temple. EO Seenanayak personally monitored the arrangements, issuing instructions to staff to ensure smooth darshan for devotees. Special measures were taken to speed up the ₹500 darshan queues, with alternative routes arranged for easier access to the lift facility. Large numbers of devotees participated in religious services including Suryopasana, Chandi Homam, and Laksha Kumkumarchana. Free prasadam distribution continued throughout the day, along with Anna Prasadam for visitors. With the conclusion of Pavithra Utsavams, temple authorities now focused on conducting Samoohika Varalakshmi Pooja on August 23, 2025, in which thousands of women are likely to participate.
