Cliftonville's Champions League dream ended as quickfire double sets Lanchkhuti up for victory

The Reds will look back with regret on a crazy 60 seconds 10 minutes into the second half that proved costly to their quest to be the first Irish League club to progress beyond the first round of the competition.
Georgian champions Lanchkhuti struck twice in that whirlwind spell, first through international midfielder Anano Tsikaridze and then Eter Sulashvili, leaving Cliftonville with a major task to turn the game around in sweltering 28 degree heat.
Abbie Magee struck to halve the deficit just as the game hit 90 minutes and deep in injury time, as the Solitude girls pushed desperately for an equaliser, she brought a save from goalkeeper Tatia Gabunia, but that wasn't enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat.
While the Reds did achieve a first win in European competition when they defeated Kosovan title winners Mitrovica on Wednesday, ultimately there were unable to complete the job that they had gone to Kosovo to do.
The absence of experienced former Northern Ireland international Kirsty McGuinness was undoubtedly a factor for the Reds.
The departures of other internationals since they won the League title last October has left Cliftonville short of strength in depth, but they are still strong with their best team on the pitch and, with McGuinness missing through suspension after being shown two yellow cards in the 3-1 extra-time win over Mitrovica, they weren't at full strength and her pace, quality and goal scoring threat were missed.
Adding to the frustration will be the fact that Cliftonville had started the game well, had enjoyed the majority of possession and even had a shot from Caitlin McGuinness that came back off a post, until a late spell of pressure from Lanchkhuti in the first half followed by those goals early in the second completely changed to complexion of the game.
Caitlin McGuinness and Carla Devine had chances early on but failed to trouble the goalkeeper, and when Lanchkhuti did pose the first real danger just before the half hour mark Rachel Norney got down at her near post to save.
Teegan Lynch had a shot saved at the opposite end, just before that close call when McGuinness hit the woodwork, before the Reds survived a late first-half rally when Sulashvili's effort came back off crossbar and then the same player brought a save from Norney in quick succession.
Lanchkhuti started the second half just as they finished the first and stunned Cliftonville twice in as many minutes, with defensive errors contributing to both goal as Tsikaridze scored the first on 55 minutes and Sulashvili really dented the Reds' hope with the second goal just a minute later.
The game would have been over had Norney not prevented Sulashvili from scoring a third six minutes later.
As it was, the Reds were still just about alive as the clock ticked down and they carved out opportunities. Naomi McLaughlin had a shot saved when she went through one-on-one with Tatia Gabunia and then had a shot from distance that the goalkeeper dealt with comfortably.
When Marissa Callaghan fired wide it looked like the final chance had gone, but there was still more to come from Cliftonville.
Magee stuck to give them a glimmer of a chance and with five minutes of added time indicated there was hope that an equaliser would come, but when Gabunia then denied Magee a second those hopes were crushed and the chance of history was gone.
CLIFTONVILLE: Norney, Magee, Burrows, Morgan, O McGuinness, Carleton, Lynch, Callaghan, McLaughlin, C McGuinness, Devine (O'Neill 77).
Unused subs: Bradley, McAllister, Markey, Gallagher, Thompson, Cunningham.
LANCHKHUTI: Gabunia, Matveeva, Tsikaridze, Sulashvili (Smith Powell 67), Camargo Isaza, Russel, Murillo, Tsulaia (Dimopoulou 83), Telles Ortiz (Gujabidze 83), Chkhartishvili, Girchits (Chichinadze 71).

Hearts will soon compete in their first match of the 2025/26 season as they prepare to welcome Aberdeen to Tynecastle. The Jambos have enjoyed several successful outings in recent weeks, beating Sunderland 3-0 in a pre-season friendly, and enjoying Scottish League Cup wins over Dumbarton, Stirling Albion and Hamilton. Hibs' season started at Dundee and they also have a European juggling act to manage. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad However, as the new season kicks off, there is still plenty more taking place in the transfer window. Here is the latest news from Hearts' Scottish Premiership rivals ahead of the 2025/26 season... Ross County star in EFL and SPFL battle Ronan Hale is the subject of much interest from around EFL and SPFL clubs The Belfast-born forward has, however, also been of huge interest to a number of other EFL clubs, including Luton Town, Reading FC and Wycombe Wanderers. Hale enjoyed an excellent campaign for Ross County last season, scoring 15 goals in 38 outings. It was, however, ultimately not enough to stop the Staggies' relegation but his efforts have attracted attention from around the football leagues with a 'bidding war' reported to be unfolding. Kilmarnock sign ex-Arsenal player Hearts rivals Kilmarnock have announced Dominic Thompson as their latest acquisition. Taking to the club's website, it was said: 'The left back has experience in both English and Scottish football and will be available for selection against Livingston this afternoon. Welcome, Dominic!' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Thompson did indeed feature for his new side against Livingston, coming on for Tom Lowery in the 85th minute as the Ayrshire club draw 2-2 at Rugby Park. The left-back's career started with Arsenal, progressing through the Hale End Academy before he signed with Brentford in 2019. In 2022, he departed the Bees, joining Blackpool with whom he was with until heading north of the border earlier this year. He made 15 appearances for Motherwell before his contract expired this summer and he was able to join Kilmarnock on a free transfer. Pundits embroiled in Hearts debate Sky Sports pundits Charlie Adam and Kris Boyd came to blows in heated debate when discussing how soon we could see Hearts challenging the Old Firm for the title. Speaking on The Warm-up, while Charlie Adam believes that the 'pool and power' of the Old Firm squads will keep them far from their fellow Scottish Premiership sides for the foreseeable future, Kris Boyd was adamant that it may only be a few years until Hearts push for that trophy. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Chris Sutton asked Adam and Boyd that when taking into consideration Tony Bloom's investment in the Tynecastle side, how likely is a Hearts top place finish to which Adam said: 'I don't think so. Because of the financial power of Rangers and Celtic.' 'I still think that the pool and power of the quality of players Rangers and Celtic get, I don't see anyone getting in between the. I think the two clubs are too far ahead. You can have analytics, looking at data of the players - do you think Rangers and Celtic are not looking at analytics of players? Of course they are.' Boyd, however, was vehemently opposed to this view, confidently saying: 'Do I think it's possible for Hearts in a few years? Yeah, I do.'

Gray delighted as Hibs respond to Midtjylland loss with win at Dundee

David Gray praised Hibernian for making light of their European exertions to kick off their William Hill Premiership campaign with a sure-footed 2-1 win away to Dundee. The Easter Road boss admitted it was a 'difficult' decision to make just one change to the side that started Thursday's extra-time defeat by Midtjylland in the Europa League. However, Gray was rewarded with a strong display as Kieron Bowie's first-half double proved enough to overcome a Dee side who pulled one back through Fin Robertson. 'I'm delighted because after everything the players put in Thursday night, everybody would be looking at today's game wondering would there be a hangover, how will the players react the first time they went Thursday-Sunday,' the manager said. 'The players reacted in the best possible way with a real professional performance. I thought we controlled the game from start to finish.' Gray was heartened to see recently-capped Scotland forward Bowie get off the mark so early in the campaign after he endured an injury-disrupted first season at Hibs. 'That's the reason he was brought to the club,' he said. 'He's suited to Scottish football as well, with the physicality, he really enjoys that side to the game. 'The confidence levels will be high with the Scottish recognition as well, which is fantastic for him on a personal note, but he's working hard every day, he's getting fitter, he's getting stronger and really benefiting from a strong pre-season.' Gray was typically coy when asked about the future of defender Lewis Miller, who is understood to be close to joining Blackburn. The Australian is currently recovering from injury. 'There has been interest in him, but right now he's still a Hibs player and until he's not, my focus is on trying to get him back on the pitch as quick as we can,' he said. Dundee boss Steven Pressley said he saw some 'green shoots' of recovery against the Hibees after his side's demoralising Premier Sports Cup group-stage exit last month. However, the 51-year-old, taking charge of a match in Scotland's top flight for the first time in 15 years, felt they were 'nervy' in possession and was keen to stress the scale of the task he inherited in June. 'Almost every single goal from the team of last season was not there today,' said Pressley, whose talismanic captain Simon Murray missed out with injury. 'It's a big rebuild. I'm not trying to pull the wool over anybody's eyes. 'There's a lot of hard work ahead. We probably need another six players in to bolster the squad and it's a real challenge.' Darwin Nunez's Liverpool exit edges closer in next stage of Reds' summer transfer plan

Darwin Nunez is heavily linked with the Liverpool exit door and the striker could find himself heading to Saudi Arabia with Al Hilal making the Uruguayan their top target Al Hilal are ramping up their efforts to sign Liverpool's Darwin Nunez after identifying him as their priority target this summer. The Saudi side have eyed a number of strikers but have now landed on the Uruguayan. ‌ Nunez's exit has been expected this summer, although a number of routes out of Anfield have been closed off. His form has tailed off and, despite once being the Reds' record-signing at £85million, Arne Slot is ready to move the striker on with the Middle East now his likely landing spot. ‌ Back in January Liverpool turned down an offer from another Saudi side in Al Nassr, but Al Hilal have since come to the negotiating table and been told the conditions of the deal. The Athletic reports that no offer has been lodged, but the transfer moves have begun. ‌ Al Hilal, now led by former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, had pursued Victor Osimhen before he joined Galatasaray. Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko were on their radar but both men were considered to be beyond them. Nunez previously had a host of Europe's top sides eyeing his services following his breakout season with Benfica. At Liverpool though he's struggled for consistency, scoring 40 times in 143 games. However last year he only found the net seven times. Aleksandar Mitrovic has led the line for Al Hilal since leaving Fulham to join the Saudi outfit, but they are looking to raid the Premier League for more attacking reinforcements. Liverpool meanwhile have made adding more forwards a priority this summer, which has impacted on Nunez's standing at Anfield. Hugo Ekitike has been signed from Frankfurt for £79m and will aid the likes of Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and new signing Florian Wirtz. The Reds are now going after Isak, who has made it clear he wants to explore his options away from Newcastle. The Magpies have rejected an £110m offer for the Swedish frontman and Liverpool could return with a fresh offer if the striker does push harder for the exit door. Nunez's possible sale could help finance a renewed bid for Isak with the club recently green lighting the departure of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich, which has banked the Reds £65.5m.
