Anwar to wrap up Moscow leg, heads to Kazan for strategic talks
KAZAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim begins the third day of his official visit to Russia with a prestigious public lecture at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).
Anwar is also scheduled to receive an honorary doctorate from MGIMO, Russia's premier diplomatic academy, in recognition of his leadership and contributions to international engagement.
The event marks the final stop of his Moscow leg before departing for the Republic of Tatarstan.
From the Russian capital, Anwar will fly to Kazan, the capital of the Muslim-majority region, for a full day of high-level meetings and halal economy diplomacy.
He is scheduled to meet the Rais (head) of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, at the historic Kazan Kremlin, where discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in halal certification, agrotechnology, Islamic finance and education, among others.
The prime minister is accompanied by five senior ministers, including Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
Anwar is also expected to tour the Kazan Kremlin complex, a Unesco World Heritage Site, before visiting two major exhibitions at Kazan Expo, the Technology Exhibition and the Russia Halal Expo 2025.
Both exhibitions are seen as strategic platforms for Malaysia to explore new partnerships in halal trade, digital innovation and resilient supply chains.
The day will conclude with a gala reception in conjunction with KazanForum 2025, where Anwar is set to deliver a keynote address during the plenary session the following day.
The Kazan leg of the visit underscores Malaysia's growing commitment to Islamic economic diplomacy, while reinforcing Anwar's broader foreign policy emphasis on multipolar cooperation and South-South engagement.
Anwar is on a four-day official visit to Russia, which runs until May 16.

Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrated with festive spirit nationwide
KUALA LUMPUR: Muslims nationwide today celebrated the Hari Raya Aidiladha with grateful hearts as thousands of congregants, including leaders, filled mosques together to perform their Aidiladha prayers. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, together with about 15,000 congregants performed the solat sunat Hari Raya Aidiladha at Masjid Putra, Putrajaya, with the mosque's Grand Imam, Dr Muhamad Zakuwa Rodzali delivering the sermon titled 'Korban dan Semangat Kebersamaan'. In SELANGOR, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah performed the solat sunat Aidiladha with more than 10,000 congregants at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, which was also attended by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Also in attendance was the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin. In KEDAH, the Sultan of Kedah, Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah performed the Aidiladha prayers at Masjid Albukhary in Alor Setar with about 2,000 other congregants, including Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and State Secretary Datuk Seri Norizan Khazali. Malaysia has expressed deep regret and disappointment over the repeated failure of the UNSC to adopt a resolution calling for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, as well as the removal of restrictions on humanitarian aid to Gaza. In a statement last Thursday, the Foreign Ministry stressed that the UNSC's repeated failure to act on one of the worst humanitarian tragedies since World War II, due to the use of veto power, is truly regrettable and deeply disappointing. Anwar also said that the continued actions of countries supplying arms to Israel are unacceptable and run counter to the principles of international law. 'It's contradictory when they issue statements of condemnation, yet continue to supply or sell weapons to Israel. Such actions violate the principles of international law and humanitarian norms. 'We strongly condemn (the atrocities) and seek diplomatic avenues to support the Palestinian struggle and help them reclaim their legitimate rights, including in Gaza,' Anwar said. Separately, during Aidiladha phone conversations with leaders of other Muslim nations, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Shari, Anwar said each expressed concern over the violence committed by the Zionist regime.
