European ministers slam Israel's Gaza control plan

MADRID — Spain and seven other European nations on Sunday condemned Israel's plan to occupy Gaza City, warning it would kill large numbers of civilians and force nearly a million Palestinians from their homes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet on Friday greenlighted plans for a major operation to seize Gaza City, triggering a wave of domestic and international criticism. In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of the eight nations said the decision "will only aggravate the humanitarian crisis and further endanger the lives of the remaining hostages". They estimated the operation could lead to an "unacceptably high number of fatalities and the forced displacement of nearly one million Palestinian civilians", according to a copy of the statement released by Spain's foreign ministry. They also warned that the planned offensive and occupation of Gaza City would be "a major obstacle to implementing the two-state solution, the only path towards a comprehensive, just and lasting peace". Besides Spain, the statement was signed by the foreign ministers of Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Portugal and Slovenia. Foreign powers, including some of Israel's allies, have been pushing for a negotiated ceasefire to secure the hostages' return and help alleviate a humanitarian crisis in the strip. Despite the backlash and rumours of dissent from Israeli military top brass, Netanyahu has remained defiant over the decision to seize Gaza City.

Ben-Gvir calls for immediate dismantling of Palestinian Authority

Far-right 'Israeli' National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take swift action to dismantle the Palestinian Authority (PA), based in Ramallah. In a post on his X account on Sunday, Ben-Gvir urged Netanyahu to 'bring immediate operative measures to the next cabinet meeting to dismantle the Palestinian Authority." אפנה לראש הממשלה בבקשה להביא לישיבת הקבינט הקרובה צעדים אופרטיביים מידיים למיטוט הרשות הפלסטינית. זה צריך להיות המענה לפנטזיות של המחבל אבו מאזן על "מדינה פלסטינית" - ריסוק רשות הטרור שבראשה הוא עומדת. — איתמר בן גביר (@itamarbengvir) August 10, 2025 He described this as a necessary response to what he called "the terrorist Abu Mazen's [Mahmoud Abbas] fantasies of a 'Palestinian state,' crushing the terror authority he heads." Reports have surfaced that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas plans to announce the transformation of the PA into a state during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. This move seeks greater international recognition based on pre-1967 borders. 'Israel' has consistently opposed Palestinian efforts for statehood recognition, viewing them as a threat to its existence. 'Israeli' officials have called for sanctions against the PA, accusing it of incitement against 'Israel'. Netanyahu and other 'Israeli' leaders reject the concept of a Palestinian state.

"Our goal is to liberate Gaza, not occupy it, as Hamas vows repeat of Oct. 7", says Netanyahu

"Israeli" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a press conference for foreign media on Sunday, declaring that his government would 'puncture the lies and tell the truth' about the ongoing war in Gaza. Netanyahu claimed that Hamas still has 'thousands of armed terrorists' in Gaza and accused the group of vowing to 'repeat the massacre of October 7 again and again.' He alleged that Hamas is subjecting Gazans to abuse, stealing their food, and shooting them when they try to move to safe zones. 'Gazans are now begging us: free us and free Gaza from Hamas,' he said. 'Our goal is not to occupy Gaza but to liberate it,' Netanyahu stated, adding, 'The war can end tomorrow if Hamas lays down its weapons. No country can tolerate a terrorist organization that threatens to destroy it.' He announced plans to establish a buffer zone in the Gaza Strip, create designated areas for food distribution, and work toward setting up a civilian authority that is independent of both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. Netanyahu also said the plan would include relocating Palestinian civilians from Gaza. He outlined five principles for ending the war once it concludes: Hamas disarmed All captives freed Gaza demilitarized "Israeli" overriding security control Non-"Israeli" peaceful civil administration On the last point, he elaborated that the goal is to have a peaceful civil administration that does not educate its children for terror, does not pay terrorists, and does not launch terrorist attacks on 'Israel'. He stated this means it would be neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority. 'We have about 70 to 75 percent of Gaza under Israeli military control, but we have two remaining Hamas strongholds — Gaza City and the central camps in Mawasi,' Netanyahu said. He stated that last Thursday, "Israel's" security cabinet instructed the IOF to dismantle these two "Hamas strongholds". Netanyahu claimed this is the best way to end the war. He said the military will first enable the civilian population to safely leave combat areas to designated safe zones, where they will be given food, water, and medical care. Netanyahu claimed that since the beginning of the war, "Israel" has allowed in 2 million tons of humanitarian aid. 'If we had a starvation policy, no one in Gaza would have survived the two years of war,' he added. He accused the United Nations of consistently refusing to distribute aid until recently, stating that this is why tons of aid are rotting on the Gaza side of the border, as the UN was and still is unwilling to deliver it.
