BreastCheck mobile unit returns to Wexford town as women encouraged to avail of examination

The unit had been absent from the grounds for quite some time, meaning that women were being forced to travel to the likes of St Vincents in Dublin for mammograms.
Labour TD George Lawlor was particularly happy to see the return of the unit and is urging those eligible to undertake their free examination.
"It's great to see the return of this mobile unit,' he said. 'It's a vital component in the battle against breast cancer, where we know that early detection is vital.'
Under the current BreastCheck scheme, women aged from 50 to 69 are invited to get a free mammogram every two years, however, women of all ages are encouraged to be breast aware and self-check regularly.
'I think, realistically, the screening eligibility age needs to be lowered to 40,' Deputy Lawlor said. 'I will be lobbying the government for this, but in the meantime, I'd urge those in the target cohort to make an appointment by calling 1800 454555 and get checked out.'

Cutting costs: Vasectomies could soon be free across Ireland as men urged to 'step up'

Vasectomies may soon be offered for free across the country, the Health Minister has confirmed. Jennifer Carroll MacNeill was responding to a question by Labour's Marie Sherlock TD, who told the Dáil that it was time for men to 'step up' and stop relying on women to use contraceptives. Responding to a parliamentary question from Ms Sherlock, Ms Carroll MacNeill agreed that there was 'significant inequity of access' to vasectomy, both geographically and based on ability to pay, and that the Government is now considering free access to vasectomies across the country. Pic: Stephen Collins/ Collins Photos She said that the Department of Health's National Sexual Health Strategy is 'committed to scoping the potential for expanding access to male and female sterilisation', including vasectomies for men. The Minister also said that a strategy will be created 'as soon as possible in 2025.' Vasectomies are currently available without cost to some medical cardholders. Ms Sherlock told the Dáil: 'The responsibility for family planning shouldn't just fall on the woman's shoulders. There's a simple, relatively pain-free procedure that a man recovers from within a very few short hours, but obviously it has a transformative impact on the family. Marie Sherlock. Photo: RTÉ. 'We have to make sure in the whole family planning conversation that men step up and take their responsibility seriously. There's a real inequality of access to the service, and particularly outside of the main urban areas,' she said. 'There's a crucial issue here about how we encourage and incentivise doctors to take on the service, and crucially, then from the department of health perspective, that there is a decent geographical spread of these services across the country.' However, Aontú leader, Peadar Tóibín, last night questioned whether the Government should be offering free vasectomies while Ireland's fertility rates continue to plunge. Peadar Tóibín. Pic: Fran Veale Mr Tóibín said: 'There are major questions in relation to where the Government is going in relation to this. So what we've seen in the last decade is a collapse in the fertility levels. They're lower now than the replacement rate, which means there's going to be significantly fewer children in future than there were in the past.' The fertility rate for 2024 stood at 1.5, a decrease of 0.5 from the 2014 fertility rate of 2.0. This is still higher than the European average, which stands at 1.38 births per woman in the EU. In Malta, the fertility rate stands at 1.06, compared to 1.81 in Bulgaria. Mr Tóibín warned that Ireland will create 'lopsided demographics, which means there will be fewer young people to be able to work, to provide the taxes to pay the pensions for people into the future. 'Good governance means a balanced demographics, and actually, at this moment in time, that means encouraging families to have more children. 'There's no doubt that the housing crisis is hammering families. They're delaying having children, and they're living, oftentimes, young couples in their parents' box room, which means that they can't have children and it's later and later until people are getting mortgages.' He went on: 'The cost of childcare is prohibitive for many, many people, and also the abortion rates have increased from about 3,000 abortions a year in 2018 to spiking well over 10,000 now.' 'All of these issues are pushing down the number of children that have been born. We should be giving families the economic confidence to be able to raise their children, to be able to have children, and so that we have a vibrant society and economy into the future.' Ryan Murphy, the operations manager at Sandyford, Dublin-based clinic said that vasectomies could not be accessed in multiple areas of the country, creating a 'two-tier system'.

HSE cannot support vaping and nicotine pouch addiction through quit smoking programmes

The HSE is not being given funding to tackle vaping or nicotine pouch addiction under current quit smoking programmes, it has emerged. The current programmes can only support people quitting tobacco or people quitting a dual use of tobacco and nicotine products together. However, the HSE has now warned services are seeing a rise in people trying to quit e-cigarettes or nicotine pouches who had never smoked tobacco. HSE's tobacco free Ireland programme national lead Martina Blake said: 'The HSE has not been directed by the department of health to develop a stop vaping/nicotine pouch cessation service. 'The development of such a service requires dedicated additional resources in terms of staff and capital funding.' It would need government funding to research the best tools to help people quit vapes, as well as more staff and a larger budget, she said. The HSE has prepared a business case and estimates bid for consideration by the health minister on the service. Staff working within stop smoking services have seen an increasing number of clients contact our stop smoking services looking for support to quit vaping/nicotine pouch use in conjunction with their tobacco use (dual use) and from clients who do not use tobacco and only use e-cigarettes and or pouches and wish to quit. Ms Blake said, in response to a parliamentary query from Labour TD Conor Sheehan, that anyone vaping and smoking tobacco can use the stop smoking service. Nicotine pouches do not contain tobacco. They are typically placed between the gum and upper lip so nicotine is absorbed through the gum. Mr Sheehan warned: 'If you look at what happened in Britain since they banned single-use vapes, the consumption trends have moved towards nicotine pouches. 'That's beginning to happen here too.' He described how a friend in Limerick was offered three nicotine pouches in a vape shop last week, as a free trial. 'There is a role for vaping in terms of smoking cessation but vaping is also a gateway to nicotine addiction, as are these pouches. The pouches are completely unregulated in Ireland and vaping is only lightly regulated,' he said. He called for new legislation to be future-proofed and cover development of further new products. I believe the minister of health needs to direct the HSE to develop a strategy for vaping and nicotine pouch cessation first of all, and this should come as a part of our overall health strategy. 'It also should be considered in light of the upcoming Budget2026.' A spokesman said minister of State for public health Jennifer Murnane O'Connor is working on changes. She will 'explore initiatives to support young people with an addiction to nicotine products and to increase awareness of the harms associated with these products,' he said. New laws are with the Attorney General for drafting, including banning all disposable vapes and restricting flavours. Read More Vaping has led a surge of young people using nicotine/tobacco products

Four public parks in Cork to offer free sunscreen

Four public parks in Co Cork will be offering free sunscreen from Monday. Labour Councillor John Maher said the cost of sunscreen is a factor in preventing people from using it. It comes as the Irish Cancer Society says that there is an increased risk of skin cancer amid high temperatures. It said that according to a survey, seven in ten people find that sunscreen is too expensive. The charity also says that one in ten people surveyed do not wear sunscreen because they cannot afford it. Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Maher said providing sunscreen dispensers was something "that was achievable" and could be delivered at a low cost. "This is a partnership with the HSE and we're going to share the costs initially and it's going to run to the end of the summer. "As with all pilots, we're going to see how it goes, we're going to see the usage," he said. Mr Maher said that because the sunscreen dispensers will be in public parks owned by Cork city, they expect to have good control over the initiative and to be able to manage it well. He said the sun in Ireland is "still dangerous" and this will provide people with protection. The sunscreen on offer will be factor 50, he added. "There's a mirror there so that if you are putting it on yourself, you can get all the spots behind your ears and neck and you don't go around with a lot of cream on you," he said. The sunscreen dispensers will be available at Marina Park, Fitzgerald Park, Clashduv Park and Meelick Park from Monday. A Status Yellow high temperature warning is in effect for 14 counties, and will be extended countrywide from midday tomorrow.
