Scots warned over scam text messages offering help with heating bills
Advice Direct Scotland said anyone receiving such a message should delete it and report it to them, with the fake texts previously circulating in England and Wales.
They say scammers are now targeting people in Scotland.
The messages, which claim to come from the UK Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), urge recipients to apply for the 'Winter Heating Allowance' through a fake website.
One such scam message reads, 'According to DWP records, you have not yet submitted your application for Winter Heating Allowance 2025-2026.' Supplied Scots are being targeted by scam text messages claiming that they are about to miss out on help with their heating bills, according to a leading charity.
It adds that people will only receive the £300 payment if they complete their application soon, giving a false deadline.
It is thought that the scam originated in the wake of the UK Government's announcement in June about the Winter Fuel Payment, a benefit that applies in England and Wales.
In Scotland, the separate Winter Heating Payment is administered by Social Security Scotland, and no application is required. Payments are made automatically to those who are eligible.
Advice Direct Scotland is warning that links included in the messages may lead to fake websites designed to steal people's personal and financial details.
The charity is urging people to spread the word about the scam, particularly if they have older friends or relatives who may be more vulnerable to fraudsters.
It comes after figures from Advice Direct Scotland in June showed digital scams have surged by over 1,000% since 2021, with reported losses totalling £861,384 in the past year.
Cases include romance scams, cryptocurrency fraud, phishing emails with fake deals, and false social media adverts pressuring victims to hand over money, bank details or personal information.
Hazel Knowles, consumer project lead at Advice Direct Scotland, said: 'These scam messages are highly convincing and may target vulnerable people, particularly older citizens who might be expecting legitimate support.
'It's important to remember that the genuine Winter Heating Payment in Scotland is automatic if you are eligible, and there is no application process.
'You will automatically receive a single payment between December and February, and you will get an email from Social Security Scotland informing you when it's coming.
'Anyone who receives a suspicious text message should avoid clicking on links, never share personal or banking details, and report the scam immediately.

The footage also showed AB Kennedy, an engineer in the Navy, staggering around in a 'state of extreme intoxication'. A court martial heard his victim had to be prescribed anti-depressants, struggles to be around men and has applied to leave the Navy. AB Kennedy, stationed at HM Naval Base Clyde - the nuclear submarine base known as Faslane - insisted she made the story up. Now, the engineering technician has been locked up for 34 weeks at a military detention centre. AB Kennedy, who was in the Navy for almost five years, was also dismissed from the service and put on the Sex Offenders Register for five years. Catterick Military Court, North Yorks, was told AB Kennedy groped the sailor while they were working together in Iceland. He groped her under her skirt, it was heard. Sentencing him, Assistant Judge Advocate General Edward Legard said: 'At that time, both yourself and [the victim] were deployed to Iceland. 'You were previously not well known to one another but during the course of an evening, you struck up a conversation, which began as a light-hearted one. The court was told that his attack caused a 'profound and lasting impact' on his victim. In sending AB Kennedy to military detention, Judge Legard told him: 'This type of behaviour is unacceptable today. 'It goes without saying that anyone in the civilian world, convicted of such an offence, would inevitably be dismissed for gross misconduct. 'That is no different here, where the services, of course, demand higher standards of behaviour.'

The company has apologised for the error and said it has made a goodwill gesture to punters, but some of those who thought they had won big are still upset Jacqui Norrish, 41, thought she had won a hefty £9,599.47, but later received an email from Gala Bingo that said an error had 'incorrectly credited [her account] with Bingo winnings '. It comes after reports state pensioners could lose DWP payments after 'unfair' £10,000 rule. The furious business owner told The Sun: 'It's absolutely outrageous how big companies can play with people's lives like this, it's disgraceful. I'm a fairly regular player with Gala Bingo, but I don't pay big stakes or anything.' She said she began playing at around 4:30pm on Monday and first won over £1,200 less than three hours later. 'I couldn't believe my luck,' she said. Jacqui, from Torbay in Devon, added: 'Then I got another win 20 minutes later for £2,280 and was already spending the money in my head. Gala Bingo, which has contacted the Gambling Commission due to the incident, has said customers would not receive their winnings. Instead, they would be refunded what they spent on Bingo Tickets. A Gala Bingo spokesperson said: "We apologise to customers for a technical error which occurred during our Summer Nights Bingo promotion for a short period of time, resulting in all players receiving incorrect payouts. Our customer Terms and Conditions clearly state that in the event of a malfunction, winnings can be voided. Affected players have been contacted directly with a gesture of goodwill."

Pauline is around 5ft 2ins, of medium build with short, greying hair. She was last spotted wearing black trousers, a black body warmer and black Nike trainers. She also has reading glasses. Anyone with information is being urged to contact cops on the non-emergency 101 number. A Police Scotland spokesperson added: "Officers are asking for the help of the public to trace a 52-year-old woman reported missing from Hawick in the Scottish Borders. "Pauline Burke was last seen around 3.50pm on Tuesday, 5 August, at Galashiels Transport Interchange." Elsewhere a man has been arrested and charged after another was left seriously injured at a Scots caravan park. Emergency services raced to Whitecairn Caravan Park, Glenluce, Wigtownshire, after the alarm was raised last night. Police Scotland said a 35-year-old man was rushed to hospital for treatment after sustaining injuries. The force said there had been a disturbance involving a 38-year-old man who allegedly pulled a knife on officers. A force spokesperson said: "Around 1.30am on Wednesday, August 6, police were called to a report that a man had been found seriously injured in Whitecairn Caravan Park, Glenluce, Wigtownshire.
