Samsung urges Galaxy smartphone users to activate these anti-theft features

Samsung has begun rolling out new theft protection and anti-robbery features in India as part of the One UI 7 security update. Building on standard Android protections, Samsung is introducing additional tools such as Identity Check and Security Delay under its Theft Protection suite. These features expand upon existing tools like Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock.
The new protections, already available on Samsung's latest foldable devices running One UI 8 based on Android 16, are now also being introduced to other Galaxy smartphones via the One UI 7 update. Samsung is expected to begin rolling out One UI 8 to existing Galaxy devices in the coming weeks.

One UI 7 security update: New theft protection features
The One UI 7 security update adds the following new security capabilities:
Identity Check: When in unfamiliar locations, Samsung's Safe Places feature (accessed through Identity Check) requires biometric authentication to modify key security settings. Samsung said that this adds an additional layer of protection when the PIN of the device may have been compromised.
Security Delay: A sub-feature of Identity Check, this introduces a one-hour delay if someone attempts to reset biometric data. Samsung says the delay gives users time to lock their device remotely from another connected device such as a tablet or PC before unauthorised access occurs.
These features enhance Samsung's existing Theft Protection toolkit, which includes:
Theft Detection Lock: Utilises machine learning to detect sudden movements like snatching and instantly locks the screen.
Offline Device Lock: Automatically locks the screen if the device remains offline for an extended period.
Remote Lock: Allows users to lock their stolen device remotely through another device.

5G smartphone shipments up by 20% on-year in 2Q25: CMR
NEW DELHI: 5G-enabled smartphone shipments grew by 20% year-on-year in the April-June quarter of 2025 (Q2 2025), accounting for 87% of the overall market, according to the latest report released by CyberMedia Research (CMR) on Wednesday. Vivo led the 5G market with a 19% volume share, followed by Samsung at 18%. The research firm said this growth was driven by affordable 5G smartphones. It found that 5G smartphones priced between ₹8,000 and ₹10,000 surged by 600% year-on-year, pointing to a surging demand for affordably accessing the latest-generation broadband services. Menka Kumari, senior analyst (industry intelligence group), CMR, said the ₹10,000 to ₹13,000 5G smartphone segment grew by 138% year-on-year, fueled by the growing demand for value-for-money 5G smartphones among first-time smartphone upgraders. 'Smartphone brands such as Xiaomi and Realme drove 5G adoption in the segment by offering feature-rich smartphones at competitive prices, backed by aggressive online and retail promotions,' she said. Growth in the broader market The broader smartphone market grew by 8% year-on-year in Q2 2025, supported by the rising adoption of affordable 5G smartphones, strong channel push, and strategic new launches across key price bands. Counterpoint Research separately said recently in a report that the India smartphone market grew by 8% year-on-year in Q2 2025, marking a solid rebound from a muted first quarter, driven by new launches and strong summer season sales. The market grew by 18% year-on-year in terms of value in the quarter. Vivo also led the overall smartphone market in the first rank with a volume share of 19% on the back of a 21% year-on-year growth in shipments in Q2 2025, followed by Samsung (16%), Oppo (13.42%), Xiaomi (13.40%), and Realme (10%), according to the CMR report. Among the top five brands, Xiaomi's shipments fell the highest at 25% as its affordable and value-for-money portfolios struggled, while Realme's shipments slipped by 18%, and Samsung's volumes were down by 4% year-on-year in Q2 2025, CMR said. In Q2 2025, OnePlus saw a 21% year-on-year decline in the premium smartphone segment , priced above ₹25,000, as it continued to grapple with ongoing market challenges. By contrast, relatively young Nothing saw a 190% year-on-year growth on a small base, while Motorola registered an 81% year-on-year growth, marking a comeback in the market, driven by focused positioning across key segments and deeper retail reach. Apple posted strong double-digit growth in India, capturing a 7% market share, fueled by strong demand for premium smartphones. The iPhone 16 series—especially the iPhone 16e— was a major growth driver. In the premium segment, above ₹50,000, Apple's market share grew by 54% year-on-year, said CMR. Transsion Group witnessed a 12% year-on-year decline in the June 2025 quarter, due to weakened consumer demand in aspirational India and limited traction in the entry-level 5G segment. Reduced channel push and growing competition from aggressively priced rivals further impacted its volumes, according to the research firm. MediaTek led the India smartphone chipset market with 46% market share. Qualcomm led the premium smartphone segment (>₹25,000) with a 35% share. In the calendar year 2025, CMR expects the Indian smartphone market to witness moderate growth, with shipments growing in single digits. 'The second half of the year will be pivotal, driven by new smartphone launches timed with the festive season. Upcoming flagship smartphone launches are expected to drive heightened consumer interest and accelerate device upgrade cycles. While there is growing awareness of AI-led features, they remain a marginal factor in actual purchase decisions, with consumers prioritising core smartphone attributes like battery life, camera quality, and overall performance,' said Pankaj Jadli, analyst (industry intelligence group), CMR. Feature phone market in freefall The research firm found that the feature phone market – comprising 2G and 4G keypad phones – also fell. The 2G segment declined 15% year-on-year in, while 4G feature phones declined sharply by 31% year-on-year in Q2 2025. The overall feature phone market was led by iTel with a 38% share, followed by Lava (32%), HMD (20%), and G-Five and Karbonn with each accounting for a 3% share.

SK Hynix expects AI memory market to grow 30% a year to 2030
South Korea's SK Hynix forecasts that the market for a specialised form of memory chip designed for artificial intelligence will grow 30% a year until 2030, a senior executive said in an interview with Reuters. The upbeat projection for global growth in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for use in AI brushes off concern over rising price pressures in a sector that for decades has been treated like commodities such as oil or coal. "AI demand from the end user is pretty much, very firm and strong," said SK Hynix's Choi Joon-yong, the head of HBM business planning at SK Hynix. The billions of dollars in AI capital spending that cloud computing companies such as Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet's Google are projecting will likely be revised upwards in the future, which would be "positive" for the HBM market, Choi said. The relationship between AI build-outs and HBM purchases is "very straightforward" and there is a correlation between the two, Choi said. SK Hynix's projections are conservative and include constraints such as available energy, he said. But the memory business is undergoing a significant strategic change during this period as well. HBM - a type of dynamic random access memory or DRAM standard first produced in 2013 - involves stacking chips vertically to save space and reduce power consumption, helping to process the large volumes of data generated by complex AI applications. SK Hynix expects this market for custom HBM to grow to tens of billions of dollars by 2030, Choi said. Due to technological changes in the way SK Hynix and rivals such as Micron Technology and Samsung Electronics build next-generation HBM4, their products include a customer-specific logic die, or "base die", that helps manage the memory. That means it is no longer possible to easily replace a rival's memory product with a nearly identical chip or product. Part of SK Hynix's optimism for future HBM market growth includes the likelihood that customers will want even further customisation than what SK Hynix already does, Choi said. At the moment it is mostly larger customers such as Nvidia that receive individual customisation, while smaller clients get a traditional one-size-fits-all approach. "Each customer has different taste," Choi said, adding that some want specific performance or power characteristics. SK Hynix is currently the main HBM supplier to Nvidia, although Samsung and Micron supply it with smaller volumes. Last week, Samsung cautioned during its earnings conference call that current generation HBM3E supply would likely outpace demand growth in the near term, a shift that could weigh on prices. "We are confident to provide, to make the right competitive product to the customers," Choi said. U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the United States would impose a tariff of about 100% on semiconductor chips imported from countries not producing in America or planning to do so. Choi declined to comment on the tariffs. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office the new tariff rate would apply to "all chips and semiconductors coming into the United States," but would not apply to companies that were already manufacturing in the United States or had made a commitment to do so. Trump's comments were not a formal tariff announcement, and the president offered no further specifics. South Korea's top trade envoy Yeo Han-koo said on Thursday that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix would not be subject to the 100% tariffs on chips if they were implemented. Samsung has invested in two chip fabrication plants in Austin and Taylor, Texas, and SK Hynix has announced plans to build an advanced chip packaging plant and an artificial intelligence research and development facility in Indiana. South Korea's chip exports to the United States were valued at $10.7 billion last year, accounting for 7.5% of its total chip exports. Some HBM chips are exported to Taiwan for packaging, accounting for 18% of South Korea's chip exports in 2024, a 127% increase from the previous year.

The update allows users to manage schedules, reminders, and notes directly within live conversations. The integration, first teased at Google I/O 2025 in May, moves Gemini Live towards more personalised functionality by linking it with widely used Google apps. Users can now create Calendar events, set Task reminders, and add notes to Keep without leaving the chat interface. How it works The rollout, which began limited testing in late June, is now more widely available. It starts with integration for Google Maps, Calendar, Tasks, and Keep, enabling actions like adding events mid-chat or pulling location details instantly. On Samsung devices, Gemini Live also connects with Calendar, Notes, and Reminders. According to 9To5Google, when enabled, the interface shows the app name above fullscreen controls along with a loading indicator. Actions, such as creating a list, prompt confirmation messages and an 'Undo' option for quick edits. Users can reference apps directly — for example, 'Create a new task in Tasks' — or make general queries like 'Do I have any reminders today?' to trigger responses. The features work alongside Gemini Live's video and screen sharing, allowing, for instance, immediate event creation when dates are detected in the user's environment or on-screen. Rollout status While some users gained access in late June, the rollout has been gradual. The integration is now appearing in both stable and beta versions of the Google app on Android, as well as on iOS, broadening access to Gemini Live's personal data tools.
