Karen Pirie cast: Who appears in the ITV show?
The gritty cop drama is produced by Line of Duty bosses and follows Detective Inspector Karen Pirie, freshly promoted after the events of series one.
What is Karen Pirie about?
Based on crime writer Val McDermid 's novels, the new series is adapted from the Scottish novelist's 2008 page-turner, A Darker Domain.
The first was based on Val 's novel The Distant Echo.
Teenager Rosie Duff was found brutally murdered in the Scottish university town of St Andrews in 1996 and three drunken students were the prime suspects.
In the second season, Karen is put in charge of an infamous cold case from the 80s that has gained fresh scrutiny from senior police, the media, and the victim's relatives.
In 1984, Catriona Grant, the daughter of a wealthy local oil tycoon, was abducted, along with her infant son.
The ransom notes that followed stirred up a huge press storm, but the culprits were never traced and neither Catriona nor her son were seen again.
But when, in the present day, a body is found with an undeniable link to the historic crime, Karen and her team must discover the truth under intense personal and professional pressure.
Here's a look at the case who will be looking at uncovering the truth in the second series of Karen Pirie.
Lauren Lyle as DS Karen Pirie
4
Outlander star Lauren Lyle again takes on the role of DC Karen Pirie.
Lauren spent a great deal of time discovering her character with the best-selling author of the book, Val and with a detective she met.
In the books, Karen is unfashionable and odd, and doesn't really mind what she looks like because her main focus is her job.
That is why Lauren worked closely with costume designer Lesley Abernethy to make her look humble but cool at the same time.
To get into character, she also explained how she got to understand the plot and the case like a detective.
She said: "I read the scripts hundreds of times.
"Like a detective, I got huge pieces of paper that I taped together and put on my wall, with details of the whole case.
'It's so complicated that I had to make sure I understood it, so I kept referencing back to this map on my wall.
"There are so many suspects and I had to walk into each scene remembering if Karen really did suspect them or if she secretly trusted them.'
Lauren appeared in Broken, alongside Sean Bean, in 2017, and played Jade Antoniak in Vigil.
She has played Marshall in Outlander since 2017.
Chris Jenks as DC Jason Murray
4
The Sex Education star is back again.
Portraying DC Jason Murray, Chris explained how his character brings humour to the show and how his relationship with Karen evolves through the episodes.
He said: "Jason is really well-intentioned and good-natured, but just doesn't quite get things right a lot of the time.
"He's desperately trying to hit the mark, but he just misses it.
"He's maybe not the brightest detective on the team, but he kind of makes up for it in his hard work and through his relationship with Karen - they develop into a really good team and she helps him find his stride.
"That relationship builds through the series - at first, they don't really see eye to eye and she's quite frustrated that she's been given such a potentially useless member of the team!
"But he really shows his qualities as they move on and eventually he comes into his own, and really stands up for himself in the later episodes."
Chris explained Jason to be a sort of mummy's boy who loves working out in the gym and enjoys doing basic things in life too such as going out and dating.
Zach Wyatt as DS Phil Parhatka
Zach Wyatt is known for his roles in The Witcher: Blood Origin, Blithe Spirit and Urban Myths.
Now he takes on the role of detective Phil Parhatka, who was supposed to be promoted, but Karen took the position instead.
Zach said: "He's a very diligent, driven detective - this job is all he has ever wanted to do and he's consumed by his work, he takes it very seriously but at a healthy level."
Who else is in the second series?

Molly-Mae cries as she brushes off ‘out of touch' accusations in tearful motherhood update
Molly-Mae Hague wiped away tears as she opened up about motherhood difficulties in a new vlog on Sunday (27 July), declaring: "I don't care who tells me I'm out of touch with reality." In a previous video, the former Love Island star described how she'd told a friend she was going to reach the end of summer 'having not done one social fun thing'. The remark drew criticism on social media, with one commenter saying: "I love Molly-Mae, I think she's sweet, but this complaining is making her look so ungrateful at least she's been on more than one holiday in under a year." In Sunday's update, Molly-Mae said she was trying hard to stay positive, but it was tough because even small tasks — like putting socks and shoes on Bambi — made her daughter scream.

Tom Cruise, 63, and his 'new love' Ana de Armas, 37, enjoy night at Oasis' Wembley concert - despite Gallagher brothers hating his films
Tom Cruise and his 'new love' interest Ana de Armas enjoyed a night out at Oasis' concert over the weekend - despite the Gallagher brothers claiming to hate his films. The actor, 63, and the Blonde actress, 37, were spotted in the crowd at Wembley with DJ Goldie sharing a selfie with him during the set. During a past interview Noel once branded Tom a 'little f***er' - however all appears to have been forgiven. Speaking in their 2007 documentary, Lord Don't Slow Me Down, the famously outspoken brother's gave their opinion on the actor. 'Tom Cruise is a f***ing c**t. Midget, he's a midget. He's a little f***er and he's not been in one good film,' Noel said while speaking backstage during their Don't Believe the Truth world tour in 2005. Someone asked: 'What about Cocktail?' 'Cocktail's great,' Liam replied, before adding: 'I hate Tom Cruise. B*****d. Him and Michael Owen. F***ing c**ts.' Tom and Ana were first linked in February and have been spotted travelling together on many occasions since then. The Mission Impossible star was among a number of famous faces in the crowd, turning up to watch Liam and Noel Gallagher reunite on stage in front of 90,000 fans. He was seen in the seated section, keeping things low-key as he enjoyed the show alongside DJ Goldie. Tom gave a thumbs-up in the snap as he enjoyed the electric atmosphere of the long-awaited gig. It comes after it was reported that Tom was expected to attend Friday's concert, after he was spotted at Oasis' set during Glastonbury last year. And while millions of fans scrambled for tickets to the reunion - many limited to just four per person - the Hollywood star reportedly pulled some strings, according to the Mirror. It's said that Tom managed to secure up to 20 tickets so he could bring a group of friends along for the night. A source close to the band told the publication: 'Tom is excited to see the gig, and his friends were thrilled he was able to offer them tickets too. They are hard for even the biggest and richest people to secure.' 'He is taking up to 20 people with him, and must be one of the few people on this tour who will be able to attend with such a big group.' MailOnline has contacted Tom's representative for comment. Oasis made a long-awaited return to London on Friday, playing their first gig in the city in over 16 years. Following a series of homecoming shows at Manchester's Heaton Park, the rock legends, fronted by brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, took to the stage at Wembley Stadium.

Mum issues scary warning after revealing way stranger tried to ‘drug' her on the train when she was alone with her baby
A MUM has shared an urgent warning about the horrific new way criminals are trying to drug women on public transport. Aysin Cilek, 22, was travelling on a train to Birmingham 's Moor Street last week with her daughter when the alleged incident took place. 4 4 The mum-of-one says she was approached by a stranger who she now believes was trying to drug her with Devil's Breath. The substance, which is also known as scopolamine, has been dubbed the 'world's scariest drug.' Victims say it puts them in a zombie-like state and can make you confused and easy to manipulate, while others say it's nothing but a myth. But Aysin claims a man tried to drug her with it while travelling with her baby daughter, Neveah. Taking to social media, she said: "Guys, the scariest thing happened to me today and I am literally just posting this for awareness, for other people, for other mums. Please be careful." Aysin said she got on the train and 'everything was fine' until a 'dodgy looking' man joined her carriage. She added: "Just as we were getting to the next stop, he comes over and he's like 'hi'. He passes me a stamp but it's obviously not a stamp - it literally looks like an acid tab. "But I wasn't thinking straight. He passes me this thing and I take it off him. I thought he was trying to sell me something. And he goes 'Can you put my stamp on my letter?'" Aysin initially agreed to help him out but soon backed out when he asked her to 'lick it.' She said the man told her 'you need to lick it [the 'stamp']. You need to get it wet to stick it on there'. 4 Ket had me peeing every 2 seconds Later on, she claims he may have had more sinister intentions. She continued: "The 'letter' wasn't even a letter, it was a piece of paper. "This guy was definitely trying to drug me. It was just me and Nevaeh. I'm actually getting teary thinking about it. If I was that stupid to just lick the stamp and put it on, I could have been drugged, and Neveah could have been gone. "This is serious guys, you need to be so careful when you're out and about. I would never ever have imagined something like that would happen to me. I've never been so scared in my life." To make things even worse, the man kept peering into her pram, saying 'don't wake the baby'. Now, the mum says she won't be getting on public transport alone again and is afraid to leave her own house. She says she reported the incident to the British Transport Police and enquiries are ongoing. A spokesperson for the police confirmed to the MailOnline that a complaint was made. The clip quickly went viral on her TikTok account @ aysincilek2 with over 3 million views and people were quick to share their thoughts. One person wrote: "This is actually so awful. Please report this. I've never heard of devil's breath ever! I am so glad you and your baby are okay." Another commented: "This is so scary for people, especially who aren't aware of devil's breath. I'm so sorry that this happened to you." "Stop being 'nice' to strange men you come across in the street. Ignore them and keep walking, especially if you're with your child," penned a third. What is Devil's Breath? REPORTS of the Devil's Breath drug have been seen across South American, Europe and even in the UK. Some people may take the drug on purpose for a "dream-like state" it can induce, mistakenly thinking it will be like mainstream hallucinogens like LSD. But Devil's Breath hallucinations tend to be far more disturbing and disjointed, often manifesting as nightmarish visions or confusing scenarios that blur the lines of reality. It may also be taken by mistake due to its close resemblance to cocaine. The correct dosage of the drug is notoriously hard to pin down, and even a slight miscalculation can lead to an overdose. This can lead to respiratory failure, acute psychosis and even death. Symptoms may include dry mouth, difficulty speaking, lethargy, hallucinations, rapid heartbeat and disorientation. Source: The UKAT Group Meanwhile a fourth said: "Do not take things that have been offered to you that's all I say." "Legitimately never heard of this before this video so thank you for raising awareness!' claimed a fifth Someone else added: "Scary, and worse still. If it was a grandparent might not have thought twice as we are old school and stamps always used to be licked." 4
