
‘A no-brainer': Some bosses happily giving staff Monday off along with Canada Day
The stat day falls on a Tuesday this year, forcing many to work an odd Monday squeezed between days off, unless they burn a vacation day to eliminate the wonky schedule.
Some startup companies say they're calling Monday a wash and giving staff a paid day off in order to smooth out the mid-week quirk and create a long weekend.
It might not make sense on paper, said Klarify founder Moody Abdul, but he said he believes in prioritizing employee happiness.
'It's that, 'if I take care of you, you'll take care of us' kind of mentality,' Abdul said.

Busy travel weekend ahead of Canada Day
Connecting the Canada Day holiday to the preceding weekend is just one way to demonstrate worker appreciation, said Abdul, whose company provides AI-driven note-taking and administrative tools to therapists.
For those in Quebec, it's the second holiday Tuesday in a row, after Saint-Jean Baptiste Day on June 24 forced many Fête nationale celebrants to grapple with their own odd workweek.

But with Canada Day following so close behind, it's not uncommon for Quebecers to take the whole week off between the two holidays, much the way many treat the stretch between Christmas and New Year's.

Of course not every employer can offer such accommodations, and full-time workers with less shift leeway will have to choose to take a vacation day or just make do with an odd schedule next week.

Ani Siddique, a research assistant at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, said he asked far in advance for Monday off in order to get ahead of colleagues with the same idea.
'I had to ask for it but I planned for things one or two months in advance,' he said.
Morad Affifi, who sat in a downtown park after a shift Friday, said the majority of his planned Canada Day festivities take place over the weekend but he, too, dipped into his vacation bank to avoid working Monday.

Suze Mason, co-founder of the digital health platform Sprout Family, said her five staff members have the Monday off and she didn't expect the move to have much of an operational impact on her company.
Sprout Family helps co-ordinate fertility care through workplace benefits programs. She said many of its clients, including larger Canadian organizations, plan to treat Monday like a holiday.

'It felt like it was the right business decision to give our employees a day to rest and recharge, while also not having as much of a direct impact on the business,' Mason said.
Mason said extending the holiday to match that of the companies Sprout Family works with can also make it easier for staff to disconnect, knowing they aren't missing out on anything crucial.
'Sometimes when you're on vacation and the business is racing ahead without you, it can feel stressful,' she said.
Vineet Johnson, founder and CEO of IRegained, said he's made it a recurring practice to bridge awkward gaps between days off when they occur.
Johnson, whose company develops neuro-rehabilitation devices, said he did the same last December when Boxing Day fell on a Thursday and otherwise would have forced people to return to work for just one day before the weekend.
'It's an easy incentive, a no-brainer incentive,' said Johnson.

Clock ticking for reforms to B.C. spirits regulations, industry says
British Columbia's craft distilling industry is renewing its plea for major liquor reforms, but says time is running out to get those changes on the books. Tyler Dyck, president of the Craft Distillers Guild of B.C., said the industry has been talking with Agriculture Minister Lana Popham, and is confident she understands the industry's two key priorities. Those boil down to a heftier share of sales at the till in government liquor stores, and an end to cash penalties that punish distillers who exceed an annual production cap. 1:57 Distilleries say tough barriers stop them from being on BC Liquor store shelves Dyck said those changes could kick-start a renaissance in the B.C. spirits industry, which would stimulate local agriculture while providing more tax revenue to the province. 'The B.C. government, David Eby pulled U.S. liquor from all government liquor stores. We have empty shelf space in there. Story continues below advertisement Most distillers would have to price the item so high it didn't move, or sell it at a loss under that scenario, he said. The industry wants to see the province emulate the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) program it has for B.C. winemakers, who only face a 17 per cent markup if they use 100 per cent B.C. grapes. 'They were given these privileges 30 years ago and they went from an industry that was worth. Couple hundred thousand dollars to the B.C. economy to now over four billion dollars. Thousands of jobs, agricultural, it's a gem,' he said. 'What we're saying is just treat us fairly. Give us the same benefits that our colleagues have dined out and powered the economy for over three decades and we will mirror them and do the same.' The industry's other major bone of contention is the 100,000-litre production cap. 2:30 Impact of Canadian bans of U.S. liquors being felt With interest in local product surging amid U.S. threats and the 'buy Canadian' movement, Dyck said some distillers are likely to hit that marker, and soon — but instead of being celebrated for success, they stand to take a hefty financial hit. 'So this is a moment in time that is extremely time-sensitive.' The guild was slated to meet with Popham on Monday, but that meeting was postponed with a pledge to keep working on the issue of the next several weeks. Popham was not available for an interview on Monday, but in a statement said ''I look forward to meeting with the Craft Distillers in the coming weeks to drill down on the changes they want to see.' 'I am actively working with the sector to help them grow and strengthen their businesses.' Dyck said he believes that work will happen in good faith, but that the clock is ticking. 'Some of these distillers will have to be making decisions — do they shut their doors or do they defy a production cap?' he said. 'No one wants to see that.'

Shaping Saskatoon's future: City unveils 2026-2029 draft strategic plan
Housing, homelessness, and community safety are Saskatoon city council's biggest priorities for the city as it begins to plan for the future leading up to the end of the decade. 'We heard on the doorstep loud and clear that [homelessness] is the single greatest issue our city faces and so that is its own strategic file,' said Saskatoon Mayor Cynthia Block. Speaking to reporters at city hall Monday, Block outlined 10 key priorities for the city to focus on for the next four years. The list includes: -Housing and Homelessness -Community Safety -Core Services -Culture, Parks and Recreation -Downtown -Economic Development -Environment -Reconciliation, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) -Transportation -Urban and Regional Growth 'It's our road map for the next four years designed to address the pressing issues our community cares about.' said Block. When asked about homelessness being a part of the provincial government's jurisdiction, Block recognizes cities are on the front lines of homelessness, but still need the tools and resources from other levels of government. 'It will require, and I believe I've said this many times, all of us,' Block said. 'Other orders of government for sure, core responsibilities of government need to be honoured, and learning to work more innovatively, I would say, with Indigenous governments.' Saskatoon's business community applauds plan Economic development is another area of priority for council, wanting to put a strong focus on how the city can be a partner to Saskatoon's business community. Story continues below advertisement Keith Moen, executive director of the North Saskatoon Business Association, is applauding council's efforts to plan for the future. But while the plan strives to take on a lot for the city and its residents, Moen would like to see more focused priorities. 'We think that's a fairly ambitious plan and we commend them for wanting to have impact in those areas because they are certainly priorities,' said Moen. 'Having said that, we've always maintained there are four key areas that the city should be focusing on. Those include protective services, waste management, infrastructure, and transportation.' In order to have the strategic plan line up with the priorities of the people, the city is encouraging feedback from all community members as to what they would like to see be at the forefront of Saskatoon's future.
