New Tribute Portfolio Hotel to go up in 18th & Vine District at Negro Leagues Baseball Museum
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A new 132-key Tribute Portfolio Hotel will be going up in the heart of Kansas City's historic 18th & Vine District, Grayson Capital announced Friday.
The new hotel will be adjacent to the iconic 30,000 square feet Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM), the real estate company said in a news release.

Grayson Capital said this project will be part of Tribute Portfolio Hotels, a global collection brand within Marriott Bonvoy comprised of independent boutique hotels.
'Our goal is to create more than a hotel—this is a cultural destination,' Michael Collins, CEO of Grayson Capital, said in the news release. 'We are building something that reflects the legacy of the Negro Leagues and the vibrancy of the 18th & Vine District.'
'This hotel project is a powerful extension of our mission to celebrate the history and heroes of the Negro Leagues,' Bob Kendrick, the President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, added.
'It will offer our visitors a new and immersive way to experience the legacy of Black baseball and the broader cultural impact of the 18th & Vine District. We're thrilled to collaborate with Grayson Capital and Marriott International to bring this vision to life.'
This development also marks a major milestone: the first majority Black-owned hotel in Kansas City since the legendary Street Hotel, which once stood at 18th & Paseo and served as a hub for Black travelers, performers and athletes.
Grayson Capital said key features of the hotel will include:
'Reuben and Ella's', an upscale restaurant named in honor of Reuben and EllaStreet, the former proprietors of the Street Hotel—Kansas City's last majorityBlack-owned hotel. The restaurant will blend elevated Southern cuisine withinventive takes on classic ballpark favorites, paying tribute to the city's culinary andbaseball traditions.
A rooftop bar designed in the spirit of Kansas City's most iconic cocktail venues,offering sweeping panoramic views of downtown Kansas City. It will serve as avibrant social destination for hotel guests, locals and visitors to the museumdistrict.
A cultural partnership platform that will include local and national collaborationswith the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, other area museums and professionalsports teams to offer 'stay-and-play' and curated tour packages. These packageswill allow guests to experience Kansas City's cultural legacy through museumaccess, sports events and behind-the-scenes storytelling.
'Kansas City is proud to see continued growth and private investment at 18th and Vine, which will now feature its first hotel property in generations,' Mayor Quinton Lucas said in the news release.
'I thank leaders at Grayson Capital, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and Marriott International for bringing investment and more visitors to see our history, explore our culture and build the future of Kansas City's Historic Jazz District.'
Once the full design is complete, Grayson Capital said it will announce the construction start date.

Static interference forced United Airlines to disable Starlink service
United Airlines has suspended its Starlink Wi-Fi service on two dozen regional airliners to fix static interference that occurs while the system is in use, the airline confirmed on Friday. The airline began offering free Starlink Wi-Fi service during flights in May, but static interference forced United officials to turn off the service on about 24 airliners, the Wall Street Journal reported. The airline is working with Starlink to correct the problem, which it says does not affect flight safety. "We expect the service to be back up and running on these aircraft soon," United officials said. "The fix will be deployed during routine maintenance, and the airline doesn't anticipate any impact on flight schedules." The problem was first revealed by The Points Guy, which reported the issue commonly occurs when new onboard connectivity technologies are installed on aircraft. United installed the Starlink service on about two dozen regional aircraft but received reports of static interference while the Wi-Fi service was used. A similar problem arose when United Airlines installed its Viasat connectivity service on its main air fleet. A quick fix solved the problem. Starlink is a subsidiary of the Elon Musk-owned SpaceX and uses a global network of small satellites to provide subscribers with Wi-Fi service anywhere in the world.

Beloved UWS eatery Jacob's Pickles shuttered for roaches, rats, sewage
Upper West Side eatery Jacob's Pickles was abruptly shuttered this week following a slew of icky code violations. The Department of Health temporarily closed the Southern-style dining hotspot after the place showed evidence of rats and roaches. The restaurant was also cited for having an 'improper, inadequate, or unapproved' sewage disposal system. An inspection report revealed that the venue, located at 509 Amsterdam Ave. between 84th and 85th Streets, also allegedly failed to properly protect 'food, supplies, or equipment' from possible contamination sources. The shutdown took effect Wednesday with a statement from the restaurant claiming they'll be back open come Monday. 3 The Jacob's Pickles website said the restaurant was closed for renovations. 'With the guidance of the health department, we uncovered underlying structural issues that contributed to unforeseen facility maintenance challenges. 'The safety of our guests and staff is always our top priority, and we will not reopen until every concern is resolved in full compliance with NYC Health Code standards,' the statement concluded. 3 Health inspectors shut the restaurant down Wednesday. Jacob's Pickles has had a C rating with the Department of Health since December. Owner Jacob Hadjigeorgis said in May 2024 he would move the American restaurant to a new location at 688 Columbus Ave., between 93rd and 94th Streets, after which he planned to open a new bar, Velvet Cowboy, inside the space Jacob's Pickles had occupied. It's unclear if Hadjigeorgis' plans have changed.

Steve Bannon Calls Musk ‘National Security Issue,' Says He 'May Be Here Illegally'
Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon seized an opportunity to air his grievances with Elon Musk amid the SpaceX founder's blowup with President Donald Trump. In a Friday interview with NPR, Bannon was asked about prior comments that Trump should cancel all government contracts with Musk. The tech mogul's companies, which include Tesla, SpaceX and artificial intelligence startup xAI, have been given billions in federal dollars over the years, according to The New York Times. 'I think we have as a country a national security issue here,' Bannon said Friday, adding that Musk has a reportedly 'massive drug problem' and a 'deep financial and business relationship' with China. The MAGA podcaster continued, 'And we know he's asked for private briefings of top secret information.' The Wall Street Journal reported in March that Musk had requested a Pentagon briefing on plans for a potential war with China. Trump told reporters at the time that Musk would not see the plans, citing his business ties to China as a conflict of interest. The formerly Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, a team tasked with rooting out supposed fraud and waste within the federal government, has drawn scrutiny over its access to classified materials and the personal information of U.S. citizens. Bannon then doubled down on his call to investigate Musk's immigration status. 'You have someone whose legal status is in question,' he told NPR, adding that you 'can't deport people from all over the world' and 'leave a white South African, who may be here illegally, here.' Bannon, who pleaded guilty this year to scamming people who donated money towards building a wall at the U.S. Southern border, added, 'It's just not right.'
