The Laureus World Sports Awards 2025 concluded on Monday with a glittering ceremony in Madrid, attended by some of the biggest names in the sporting world, including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Simon Biles, Luis Figo, and many more.
It proved to be an even greater night for American gymnast Biles, who was named the Sportswoman of the Year, while Swedish pole-vaulter Mondo Duplantis captured the men's honour.
Biles, who won gold medals in the team, all-around and vault competitions, as well as a silver on the floor exercise at the 2024 Paris Games to complete a triumphant comeback three years after withdrawing from events at the Tokyo Olympics, won the Laureus award for the fourth time.

That equalled the record held by tennis great and U.S. compatriot Serena Williams.
'I'm so happy to be here in Madrid and to receive my fourth Laureus Award,' Biles said.
'I won this Award for the first time in 2017 and Laureus has been a part of my story since then. There might be a little girl watching someone like me on television and deciding she can do it, too.'
Last year's winner Novak Djokovic handed Duplantis his first Laureus award after he was nominated in each of the last three years, becoming only the second track-and-field athlete to win it after Usain Bolt.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest pole vaulters of all time, Duplantis won a second straight Olympic gold medal in Paris, breaking his own world record for the ninth time, before shattering it once again in the Silesia Diamond League meeting the following month.
'I am incredibly honoured to have won my first Laureus, this is the ultimate award that we athletes want to win. I know because this is the fourth time I have been nominated – and that proves it's harder to win a Laureus than an Olympic gold medal,' Duplantis joked.
Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade won the Comeback of the Year award after completing her inspirational return from career-threatening injuries at the Paris Games to win the gold medal in the floor competition.

Teenage football sensation Lamine Yamal, who helped Spain win the European Championship last year, won the Breakthrough of the Year, the sixth footballer to win that award.
The Laureus World Sports Awards nominees are selected by the global media, while the winners are determined by the 69 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy. The awards have been presented annually since 2000.

Relief for five-time Olympic champion McKeown after disqualification scare at Australian trials

Five-time Olympic gold medallist Kaylee McKeown was cleared to compete in the 50m backstroke final at the Australian trials on Monday after she successfully appealed her disqualification in the heats. The 23-year-old world record holder finished first in her heat, but her time was not displayed on the board, and she was ushered away in tears by officials after being called for an early start. However, McKeown's team lodged an appeal, and after an anxious wait, she was given the green light to compete in the final, which closes out the opening day of the trials in Adelaide. The trials serve as Australia's qualifiers for the July 11-August 3 world championships in Singapore. '(McKeown) was disqualified after being ruled to initiate an early start from lane four of heat one but her protest was upheld after officials ruled in her favour that she was distracted by a movement immediately prior to the signal,' Swimming Australia said. 'Her time of 27.27 made her the fastest qualifier tonight with good mate Mollie O'Callaghan second fastest with 27.72 – both under qualifying time for Singapore World Championships.' McKeown became the first woman to retain the 100 and 200 backstroke Olympic titles at last year's Paris Games.

Why did Robert Lewandowski ‘lose trust' in Poland coach Michal Probierz and resign from international football?

Poland and Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has announced that he will not play for the national team again for as long as coach Michał Probierz remains in charge of the side, shortly after he was stripped of the national team's captaincy. At the end of the long season with Barcelona, the 36-year-old Lewandowski mentioned physical and mental fatigue, making himself unavailable for his country for the ongoing international window. Consequently, coach Probierz decided to remove the star striker from captaincy, replacing him with with Internazionale's Piotr Zieliński. 'Taking into account the circumstances and a loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to resign from playing for the Poland national team for as long as he remains in charge,' the veteran forward posted on social media. Lewandowski, however, said he hoped that he could wear the national shirt soon, provided that a new manager was at the helm of the squad, replacing Probierz, who had taken over in 2023. 'I hope I will still have the chance to play again for the best fans in the world.' A hamstring injury had marred Lewandowski's finish to the season as he missed out on key fixtures for Barcelona, including the Champions League semifinal against Inter Milan and the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid. Making a return in the last three games of the LaLiga season, Lewandowski netted two goals as Barça clinched the league. He, however, soon opted out of Poland's friendly against Moldova and a World Cup qualifier against Finland this month. 'Returning from injury, I told Coach Probierz that I did not feel good physically, but especially mentally,' Lewandowski told Polish media earlier this week. The former Bayern Munich forward remains Poland's most capped (158) and highest goal-scorer (85) in international football. Coach Probierz had led Poland to the Euro 2024 last year, where they ended winless and suffered a group-stage exit.

'I resign as long as he remains coach': Robert Lewandowski boycotts playing for Poland after being sacked as captain

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski announced Sunday that he is stepping away from international duty with Poland, citing a loss of trust in national team coach Michał Probierz. The 36-year-old forward, Poland's all-time leading scorer, made the decision public in a statement on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. 'Taking into account the circumstances and a loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to resign from playing for the Poland national team for as long as he remains in charge,' Lewandowski wrote. The bombshell announcement follows another major development—earlier in the day, Probierz stripped Lewandowski of the team captaincy, handing the armband to Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski. According to the Polish Football Association, Probierz personally communicated the decision to Lewandowski, the team, and the staff. Despite the dramatic announcement, Lewandowski did leave the door open for a potential return to the national team in the future. 'I hope I will still have another chance to play again for the best fans in the world,' he added. Lewandowski's absence from the current international window had already raised eyebrows. He was not included in the squad for Poland's friendly against Moldova on June 6—a match they won 2–0—and will also miss their upcoming World Cup qualifier against Finland on June 11. Polish news agency PAP reported that the striker had requested to be excused from duty to rest. Lewandowski's decision follows a disappointing UEFA Euro 2024 campaign under Probierz, in which Poland failed to register a single win and exited the tournament at the group stage. Probierz has been in charge since 2023. The forward leaves a towering legacy with the national team. Since making his debut in 2008, Lewandowski has earned 158 caps and scored 85 goals, making him Poland's all-time top scorer. He has represented the country at three European Championships (2012, 2016, 2020) and three World Cups (2018, 2022, 2026 qualifiers underway), though major international silverware has eluded him. At the club level, Lewandowski remains in strong form. In the 2024–25 season with Barcelona, he played a key role in helping the Catalan giants secure a domestic treble, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup. He contributed 23 goals and 9 assists across all competitions, showcasing his enduring quality at the highest level. With Poland sitting atop Group G in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers after two wins in as many matches, the national team will now have to navigate their campaign without their most experienced and prolific player—at least as long as Michał Probierz remains in charge.
