Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal praised captain Shubman Gill after the first day of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Speaking at the press conference, Jaiswal said Gill is doing a great job as both a captain and a batter. He was asked about Gill's batting and captaincy in the series.
'It's amazing to see the way he has been batting. Incredible innings. As a captain also he has been amazing. He is very clear in his head what he wants to do with the team. We are very confident about our plans,' Jaiswal said.

Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 114 at the end of Day 1, helping India reach 310 for 5. Jaiswal also played a strong innings, scoring 87 before getting out to a wide ball from Ben Stokes.
Jaiswal on his batting and pitch
'It is disappointing to get out like that but it is part of game. But I want to enjoy the game at the same time. I try to find a solution what can be good in this situation (when he is challenged). Plans are always in the mind," Jaiswal said about his own batting after he fell short of a century by just 13 runs.
'I really enjoyed batting. Initially, I was playing the session and they were bowling well. The wicket was damp. Compared to Leeds, there is less seam movement and bounce here,' he added.
Apart from Gill and Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja, Karun Nair, and Rishabh Pant also contributed. Jadeja remained unbeaten at 41 off 67 balls, while Nair and Pant contributed with 31 and 25 runs respectively.
India's selection call raises questions
India adopted a measured approach with the bat after picking three all-rounders in the playing eleven at the cost of specialist bowling resources, raising plenty of questions.
Like Leeds, the Edgbaston surface is offering plenty of runs and with no Jasprit Bumrah in the attack, India would need to put up a total in excess of 500 to make a match of it.
With premier match winner Bumrah rested from the game, India brought in Akash Deep in his place while making two interesting changes, leaving out Sai Sudharsan for Washington Sundar and replacing Shardul Thakur with Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Kuldeep Yadav was once again ignored as India picked a second spinner in batting all-rounder Washington. For a team that struggled to take 20 wickets at Leeds, the decision to shore up the batting was debatable.

Virat Kohli stares at camera as India star spotted taking a stroll in London with wife Anushka Sharma

Virat Kohli, who announced his retirement from Test cricket in May this year, is currently living in London with his family. The move, made last year, appears to have been a conscious decision to embrace a quieter, more private lifestyle away from the constant public glare back home. As India battle through the second Test of the series against England, Kohli remains in the same city, though far removed from the action, opting for time away from the field with his wife, Anushka Sharma and their two kids. Virat Kohli was spotted by a fan with wife Anushka Sharma (Instagram) A video now doing the rounds on social media captures the couple walking down a street in London, with Kohli briefly turning toward the camera before continuing on alongside Anushka. The city's dense subcontinental population means fan encounters are frequent, and this isn't the first time such footage has emerged. Ever since their shift to London, fans have kept a keen eye on the pair during their rare public appearances, attempting to capture candid glimpses of the two during strolls or outings. Watch: Kohli's last appearance on the field was during the 2025 Indian Premier League final, when he ended an 18-year wait to lift the title on June 4. The euphoria of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL title win, however, didn't last long as a tragic stampede during the side's title-winning parade the next day resulted in multiple deaths in Bengaluru. Kohli is only active in ODIs, and is expected to return to the field in August when India host Bangladesh for a three-match series. He retired from T20Is last year after India won the T20 World Cup in Barbados. Kohli's Test retirement While Kohli continues to live in London, the Indian Test team is taking part in a five-match series in England, with the second Test currently ongoing in Birmingham. Shubman Gill, who succeeded Kohli at the No.4 spot, emulated the latter's celebration on Wednesday at the same venue after reaching his century. Kohli's decision sent shockwaves across the cricketing world, but came on the back of poor performances with the bat throughout the 2024/25 season. The batter had only one Test century to his name in 10 matches (5 home, 5 away), and endured a rough outing in Australia, where his first Test-ton was followed by an extended patch of falling to deliveries outside the off-stump.

Sourav Ganguly Questions Gautam Gambhir's India XI for 2nd Test vs England: Are These Really Our Best Spinners?

The second Test of the India vs England series in Birmingham has reignited a fiery debate in the Indian cricketing circles, with former captains Sourav Ganguly and Sunil Gavaskar openly questioning the team combination selected by head coach Gautam Gambhir. With the inclusion of Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Akash Deep, and the exclusion of left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, India's strategic choices have come under intense scrutiny. Speaking on-air during the Tea break on Day 1, former BCCI president and Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly didn't mince his words when assessing India's bowling line-up, particularly the spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. 'I am not sure whether India are playing their two best spinners,' Ganguly remarked pointedly. 'With England choosing to bowl first, this is India's golden opportunity. Put runs on the board, and make the pitch do the talking later.' His concerns echoed widespread sentiments among experts and fans alike who expected Kuldeep Yadav to play a key role, especially on a Birmingham pitch anticipated to assist turn from Day 3 onwards. Gavaskar Baffled by Kuldeep Omission Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar voiced similar confusion on Sony Sports, questioning the rationale behind leaving out Kuldeep Yadav, a proven wicket-taker in subcontinental and spin-friendly conditions. 'I'm baffled that Kuldeep wasn't picked. Everyone's saying there's turn on this pitch,' Gavaskar said. 'You scored 830 runs across two innings in Leeds. Batting wasn't your issue. The concern was lack of penetration in the bowling attack.' Gavaskar's analysis highlighted a key flaw in India's approach — trying to bolster lower-order batting with Sundar and Reddy instead of sharpening the bowling attack to take 20 wickets, which remains the ultimate objective in Test cricket. Ravi Shastri Slams Bumrah's Absence If the spin debate wasn't enough, Ravi Shastri raised eyebrows with a blistering take on India's decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah, who is reportedly fit and available. The former head coach questioned why India's premier fast bowler was not spearheading the attack in a crucial match. 'You don't rest a match-winner like Jasprit Bumrah in a must-win Test unless he's injured. If he's fit, he plays. Period,' Shastri told broadcasters, mirroring fan frustration after India's five-wicket loss in Leeds. India's pace attack, without Bumrah, lacks both bite and experience. With the series at stake and England riding high on confidence, many believe this was not the time for experimentation. India's Test Woes: A Bigger Crisis Looms? India's decision-making for this match also reflects a larger decline in red-ball form. Since October 2024, India have won just one Test in their last nine, their worst run in over a decade. That dismal streak includes losses both at home and abroad, suggesting deeper systemic issues with team balance and leadership transitions. Captain Shubman Gill, still finding his feet as Test leader, now faces the immense pressure of turning this series around — without the comfort of experienced match-winners like Bumrah or Kuldeep in the XI.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi Smashes Third Fastest Fifty In India U19 History With Explosive 86 vs England

India U19's latest batting sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, delivered a jaw-dropping performance in the third Youth ODI against England, slamming the third-fastest fifty in India U19 history and second-fastest by an Indian in U19 ODIs. His explosive 31-ball 86 laid the foundation for India's successful 269-run chase in a rain-shortened 40-over thriller, handing the visitors a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. #vaibhavsuryavanshi #teamindia #cricmantrana #indvseng — CRICMANTRANA (@cricmantrana) July 2, 2025 Also Read: Inside Shubman Gill's ₹3.2 Crore House In Punjab: Photos, Interiors, Gym & More Vaibhav Suryavanshi's Record-Breaking Fifty: A Star is Born At just 14 years of age, Suryavanshi's audacious strokeplay has already earned him a cult following. On Wednesday, he reached his half-century in a mere 14 balls, sending the England bowling attack into disarray. His innings was a masterclass in controlled aggression: six boundaries and nine towering sixes, scored at an astounding strike rate of 277.41. The left-hander didn't just stop at the half-century milestone. By the time he was dismissed, he had surpassed Suresh Raina's long-standing record for the fastest 80+ run knock in India U19 ODI history and overtook Mandeep Singh's record for most sixes (8) in a Youth ODI for India. Only Rishabh Pant, with an 18-ball fifty against Nepal in 2016, has scored a quicker U19 ODI half-century for India. Setting the Tone for a Clinical Chase England, after being put into bat, posted a competitive 268/6, thanks to a fluent 76* off 44 from captain Thomas Rew and a solid 62 from BJ Dawkins. Kanishk Chouhan turned the game in India's favour with the ball, claiming 3/38, including the key wickets of Ben Mayes and Rocky Flintoff in quick succession. In response, India's chase got off to a rocky start with the early fall of stand-in skipper Abhigyan Kundu. But Suryavanshi walked in and changed the tempo in an instant. With fearless hitting and ice-cool composure, he ensured India rocketed to 111/2 in just 8 overs before he was eventually caught in the deep. Middle Order Holds Firm to Seal the Win While Suryavanshi stole the limelight, India's middle order held their nerve to see the team through. Vihaan Malhotra (46), Kanishk Chouhan (43), and RS Ambrish (31*) contributed crucial runs, ensuring that the momentum created by Suryavanshi didn't go to waste. India eventually crossed the finish line with 33 balls to spare, securing a four-wicket win that could define the tone of the series. A Star on the Rise: Consistency Beyond His Years This isn't a one-off display from Suryavanshi. After drawing national attention with a blazing century in IPL 2025, he has carried that form into the U19 setup with scores of 48, 45, and now 86 in the first three matches of this tour. His maturity, stroke range, and fearlessness are already drawing comparisons to some of India's finest prodigies. For a player just entering his teens, Suryavanshi's impact is nothing short of phenomenal—and perhaps, unprecedented in Indian cricket. What This Means for India U19 and Beyond With India now leading the series 2-1, the momentum firmly rests with the visitors. Suryavanshi's blitz not only tilted this match but could shape the rest of the series. His performances have added a new layer of firepower to the top order and brought a sense of inevitability to India's run chases. More importantly, his emergence as a reliable match-winner at just 14 years old bodes well for the long-term future of Indian cricket. If nurtured correctly, Vaibhav Suryavanshi could very well become the next big thing in Indian cricket—a rare talent blending flair with consistency.
