South Korea's Lee orders new investigation team to look into deadly 2022 crush

CNN17-07-2025
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has ordered the setting up of a new investigation team, involving police and prosecutors, to look into the deadly Halloween crowd crush that killed 159, mostly young people, in 2022, his spokesperson said on Thursday.
Lee's move to launch a new probe came as he met the bereaved families of victims from recent major disasters, including the Halloween crush in Seoul's Itaewon district, his spokesperson Kang Yu-jung told a briefing.
Lee, who took office in June, has promised to make the country safer and to prevent any repeat of the disasters in recent years that have often been blamed on the inadequate response by authorities.
The president said the new investigation team would work alongside a special commission that was launched in September last year to look into the case, according to the spokesperson.
At the meeting with Lee, Song Hae-jin, a representative for the families of the crush victims, said police records and information regarding the government's response to the disaster had been withheld from the special commission.
During his meeting with the bereaved families, Lee bowed deeply as he apologized for any failures by authorities.
'As the head of the state, I would like to formally apologize on behalf of the government for failing to fulfill its responsibility to protect the lives and safety of the people, and for the many people who lost their lives as a result,' he said as some relatives wept.

Photos reveal Chile's pursuit of Venezuelan crime syndicate branded a terror threat by Trump

ARICA, Chile (AP) — Chilean prosecutors brought a record number of gang members to trial after a yearslong investigation into Tren de Aragua, the Venezuelan crime syndicate designated a foreign terrorist group by U.S. President Donald Trump. The Chilean case dismantled the gang's northern Chile offshoot, known as Los Gallegos, and highlighted the value of long-term investigations as public enthusiasm grows for a more ruthless approach. ___ This is a photo gallery curated by AP photo editors.

Head Shaolin monk investigated for alleged embezzlement and affairs

Shi Yongxin, the abbot of the world-renowned Shaolin Temple, is being investigated for offences including embezzlement, "improper relationships with multiple women" and "having illegitimate children", the temple said. In a statement on Sunday, Shaolin temple said multiple departments were jointly investigating Mr Shi and more information would be made public in due course. The 1,500-year-old Shaolin Temple, located in a mountain range in central China's Henan province, attracts thousands of disciples every year - some from across the world. Mr Shi, who has been Shaolin Temple's abbot since 1999, has earned the nickname "CEO monk" for transforming the institution into a global brand. Under his leadership, the temple started opening schools outside China and formed a travelling troupe of monks who performed Shaolin kung fu shows - the temple's signature style of martial arts. News of Mr Shi being investigated was the most read topic on Weibo on Monday morning. The last post on his own Weibo account, which has more than 880,000 followers and had been updated daily with Buddhist teachings, is dated 24 July. Mr Shi also came under scrutiny in 2015 for allegedly having sexual relations with women and embezzling temple funds. He also allegedly received expensive gifts from companies and local governments, including a Volkswagen SUV and a robe with gold thread. He was investigated at the time for embezzlement and fathering several children, but was later cleared of the charges. In an interview with BBC Chinese in 2015, Mr Shi was asked about the allegations of corruption and affairs with women. "If there were a problem, it would have surfaced long ago," he said at the time. Shaolin Temple also came under fire in 2015 over a plan to build a nearly $300m temple complex which also included a hotel, a kung fu school and a golf course. The name "Shaolin" has gained prominence in pop culture over the years, including being the title of a 1982 film starring Jet Li. The temple is referenced in songs by American hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan and inspired a spinoff of the video game Mortal Kombat.

Police searching for suspect in the killings of a couple found dead at an Arkansas park

Police are searching for an unknown suspect in the killings of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, according to a release from Arkansas State Police Sunday. The Brinks were hiking in the Devil's Den State Park with their daughters, ages 7 and 9, who were not injured in the attack. The girls are safe with family members, police said. The park is in a remote and rural area, where the terrain is 'rugged, vegetation is thick and there is no cellphone service,' police said. Police were notified of the suspected double homicide around 2:40 p.m. Saturday. The suspect is described as a White male of medium build. Investigators said they believed he was wearing a long-sleeved shirt with sleeves rolled up, dark pants, a dark ballcap, sunglasses and fingerless gloves. He was carrying a black backpack and seen driving towards the park exit in a black four-door sedan that may have been a Mazda with its license plate covered by tape, police said. The vehicle may have been travelling on State Highway 170 or State Highway 220 near the park. The area has been cordoned off and police have asked visitors to the park to share any images they might have of the suspect from the park Saturday. Local residents have also been asked to check security and game camera footage. Police have increased law enforcement presence at state parks, said Shea Lewis, secretary of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism in the release. 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred at Devil's Den State Park. Our hearts are with the victims' loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. The safety of our visitors and staff is our highest priority, and we are working closely with Arkansas State Police and various law enforcement officials as the investigation continues,' the statement read. The Brinks family had recently moved to Prairie Grove from another state, police added. Solve the daily Crossword
