15 New Orleans bars and restaurants that have closed this summer

Axiosa day ago

The doldrums of summer came early to New Orleans, bringing with them a rush of bar and restaurant closures.
Why it matters: More hospitality owners are pulling the plug early rather than crossing their fingers and hoping to keep paying their bills through the slowest part of the year.
The big picture: With few festivals, high temperatures and little tourism, summer has long been New Orleans' slowest season.
So, if a restaurant or bar is going to close, it's more likely to come during the warmest months of the year.
On the lighter end, summer might mean limited hours or short-term closures.
But the coronavirus pandemic cranked that intensity to the max level, with full-blown summer shutdowns picking up pace in recent years.
Yes, but: We're not powerless against it.
As Ian McNulty outlined for The Times-Picayune, now's the time to show your favorite bars and restaurants that you're there to help them make it through to fall.
You can buy gift cards, arrive earlier, and shop smarter when you're opting for take-out by ordering directly from the restaurant rather than paying fees to third-party apps.
Closures since March 2025 so far include:
Maypop and Mopho, both from chef Michael Gulotta. Maypop in particular had a tough run after a closure prompted by a building collapse across the street last year.
Tracey's Irish Channel Bar. Owners said the cancellation of the Irish Channel St. Patrick's Day parade this year was the final straw, WDSU reports.
BABs from chef Nina Compton and partner Larry Miller.
Justine from Justin and Mia Devillier.
Frey Smoked Meat Co., which had been in Mid-City for about a decade.
The Franklin, which has already made way for new restaurant Evviva.
Zony Mash, the brewery on the edge of Broadmoor.
Ugly Dog Saloon, which closed in the CBD.
Milan Lounge, a beloved Uptown dive bar.
Medium Rare, which was only open for about a year, Eater reports.
Tonti's Bistro in Algiers Point.
Brocato's Kitchen in Mid-City, though The Times-Picayune reports it may reopen elsewhere.
Trilly's Cheesesteak, which cited rising costs as a major factor.

Elon Musk rages against Steve Bannon after call for drug investigation

Elon Musk's feud with Steve Bannon intensified Tuesday after Bannon suggested President Donald Trump rethink government contracts with Musk's company and appoint a special counsel to investigate the mercurial billionaire's alleged drug use. 'Bannon is such a r——d liar,' Musk raged on his social media platform in the very early morning hours, using a slur for people with intellectual disabilities. 'Dumber than a doorstop.' Musk was replying to comments Bannon made on the debut episode of the 'Sunday Night With Chuck Todd' streaming series. The clip that appeared to get under his skin showed Bannon suggesting Musk has government contracts to thank for adding as much as $150 billion to his net worth and suggested, therefore, U.S. taxpayers should own a share of his SpaceX company. Musk's rant took issue with Bannon's math, but moreso his reasoning. 'If Bannon's dumb as f–k reasoning made any sense, then anyone who bought products from any company would automatically own that company,' he posted before again insulting Bannon's mental capacity. According to Bannon, if any other CEO threatened to decommission one of the rockets his company uses in its work with the government after a personal spat with a U.S. president — as Musk did last week — that executive would be fired. Bannon also told Todd that President Trump should further look into a recent bombshell New York Times story hinting Musk's alleged drug use could be problematic, which Musk flatly denied. 'I think the best way to do it is as a special counsel that can kind of oversee everything,' Bannon said. 'Pull his security clearance for the drugs, temporarily, investigate the whole drug situation.' The Times reported May 30 that Musk was 'using drugs far more intensely than previously known' while campaigning for Trump. His substance use reportedly included ketamine, ecstasy, psychedelic mushrooms and pills that appeared to be the ADHD stimulant Adderall. Bannon, who served in Trump's first administration, has a history of butting heads with Musk, who headed the Department of Government Efficiency in Trump's second administration. Tensions escalated last week when Musk posted a message online suggesting Justice Department records show that Trump's friendship with disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein would present problems for the president. Musk later deleted that post. __________

Paramount lays off several hundred employees amid linear TV declines and 'dynamic macro-environment'

Paramount Global will lay off 3.5% of its domestic workforce, which amounts to several hundred jobs, as the media and entertainment company continues to navigate a difficult industrywide decline in linear television. The majority of the affected employees were notified Tuesday, according to a letter sent Tuesday morning to employees that was obtained by The Times. In addition to the decline in linear TV, the company also cited a "dynamic macro-economic environment" and the continued priority of streaming business investments as the backdrop to these layoffs. The affected departments were not disclosed. "We recognize how difficult this is and are very thankful for everyone's hard work and contributions," Paramount co-chief executives George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins wrote in the letter. "These changes are necessary to address the environment we are operating in and best position Paramount for success." The layoffs come just one day after Paramount said its chief financial officer, Naveen Chopra, would be resigning at the end of the month. The company said in a regulatory filing that Chopra's resignation was not the result of disagreement with the company or its board of directors. Paramount is just one of several studios across Hollywood that are downsizing. Last week, Walt Disney Co. announced layoffs for several hundred employees in the U.S. and abroad, citing the decline in linear TV. The layoffs largely affected the film and television marketing teams, television publicity, casting and development as well as corporate financial operations. The move came just three months after the company cut 200 workers, including at ABC News and Disney-owned entertainment networks. Warner Bros. Discovery also laid off employees from its cable TV channels last week, cutting several dozen positions. On Monday, the media and entertainment company said it would split into two separate firms — one entity that includes the film studio, television production, HBO and HBO Max and DC Studios and the other with cable channels such as CNN and TNT as well as its European over-the-air networks.
