Regaining their rhythm: Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei beat Denmark's Jesper Toft-Amalie Magelund 17-21, 21-16, 21-14 in a pulsating 54-minute Indonesian Open quarter-final match at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta.
PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei have proven that their partnership has withstood tests and tribulations after reaching the semi-finals in the Indonesian Open.
Yesterday, the world No. 3 Tang Jie-Ee Wei battled their way to a 17-21, 21-16, 21-14 win against Denmark's Jesper Toft-Amalie Magelund in a pulsating 54-minute quarter-final match at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta.
The way they complemented one another just like old times to overcome the Danes was a sight to behold.
Now that they have put behind their past troubles, Tang Jie-Ee Wei are bent on staying united in their mission to get the better of sixth seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand in a bid to enter their first Super 1000 final.
The Thais will not be pushovers as they were in immaculate form en route to knocking out professionals Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie 21-16, 21-12 in another quarter-final match.
The semis in Indonesia is Tang Jie-Ee Wei's best result since returning as a pair after a brief split in March due to a fallout and the former admitted that the separation had taught them to appreciate one another.
'My partner played well today. We have learnt from our short break to be more patient and responsible,' said Tang Jie in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation.
'Playing with younger partners showed us that they have the abilities but no opportunities to play in high-level tournaments. As for us, we learnt that we needed to improve our consistency and leadership.'
While excited to be back on track, Ee Wei does not want to take the partnership for granted.
'It was not an easy match but our coach (Nova Widianto) urged us to stay confident and trust each other,' said Ee Wei.
'While we are happy, we need to stay focused as this is an important week for us.'
Tang Jie and Ee Wei were temporarily paired with Chan Wen Tse and Loo Bing Kun respectively but thanks to encouragements from many, especially their coach Nova, they decided to give their partnership another shot and are looking to stay on for a long time.
Meanwhile, Soon Huat-Shevon were left disappointed after losing to the Thais for the fifth time in eight meetings.
'We've played so many times and know each other's game very well. Today, though, I didn't play well as I was not as stable and consistent as I wanted to be. The Thais capitalised on that,' admitted Shevon.
Added Soon Huat: 'The Thais are consistent and used their speed to pressure us. We will next focus on the China and Japan Opens.'

Wei Chong-Kai Wun had beaten world No. 8 Sabar-Moh in the last four last year but the latter avenged their defeat by coming out on top 18-21, 21-12, 21-18 at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta on Saturday (June 7). World No. 7 Wei Chong-Kai Wun did well to come back and win the second game after losing the first but could not maintain their form against the spirited duo in the decider and lost in the match lasting an hour. Sabar-Moh will take on either teammates Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto or South Korea's Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae for the title on Sunday (June 8).

Pearly-Thinaah attribute amazing comeback win over China pair to change in mindset

Thinaah's change in mindset is paying dividends. Pearly-Thinaah smashed into their maiden World Tour Super 1000 final after impressively beating China's world No. 6 Li Yijing-Luo Xumin in the Indonesian Open. The world No. 4 pair looked down and out after losing the first game 12-21 but showed great fighting spirit and mental fortitude to storm back to claim 21-17, 21-11 victories in the next two games at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta yesterday. Pearly attributed the breakthrough win to the pair's patient approach. "We kept reminding each other to be patient. We didn't want to rush. We just wanted to enjoy the game, whether win or lose," Pearly told the Badminton World Federation (BWF). "Our change in mindset was the turning point for us. We grew in confidence and that helped us win today (yesterday)." The win meant a lot for Pearly and Thinaah after previously struggling to even reach the last four in a Super 1000 tourney. "Words cannot describe how happy we are today (yesterday). From one game down, we really supported each other and we didn't want to give up easily," said Thinaah. "I'm very thankful to Pearly for her accurate smashes. We have been encouraging each other a lot in this tournament and before as well but today (yesterday) was a crucial point because it was not only about the strategy but also the mental and physical aspects. "I'm really thankful to have Pearly on my side." Pearly-Thinaah have avenged their defeat to Yijing-Xuomin after losing in straight games to the duo in the China Open first round last September. The pair have now reached their third final of the year after capturing the Thailand Open last month and finishing runners-up in the Indonesian Masters in January. Standing in Pearly-Thinaah's way in their bid to land the biggest title of their careers so far will be either Yijing-Xuomin's teammates, world No. 1 Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning or South Korea's world No. 3 Baek Ha-na-Lee So-hee. Pearly-Thinaah are out to emulate 2009 champions Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, who were the only Malaysians previously to triumph in the women's doubles in the Indonesian Open. On their approach for the final, Thinaah said: "We want to have a relaxed mind and we just want to stay calm. "We have to remember each other's strengths and weaknesses and stay patient."
