Satwik-Chirag return to top 10 in BWF rankings
New Delhi: India's dynamic men's doubles duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty returned to the top 10 of the BWF rankings, climbing three spots to reclaim the ninth spot. The Indian duo, who had previously held the No. 1 ranking, rose up the ladder following their semifinal finish at the China Open, the season's last Super 1000 badminton tournament. This was their fourth semifinal appearance of the 2025 season, having earlier reached the last four at the Malaysia Open, India Open and Singapore Open. In men's singles, Lakshya Sen climbed two places to move up to world No. 17 with 54,442 points. Veteran shuttler HS Prannoy also gained ground, improving his ranking to No. 33. In the women's singles, 17-year-old Unnati Hooda, who stunned two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu at the China Open, attained the career best ranking as she jumped four spots to be placed 31. Despite the loss to the younger compatriot, Sindhu retained her No. 15 spot and remains the highest-ranked Indian in the women's singles. In women's doubles, India's leading pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand remained firm at No. 11, while Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa rose two positions to 45th.

Costly call: Wrong strategy doomed Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in China Open final, says coach
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — National men's doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik lost in the final of the 2025 China Open Badminton Championships yesterday because they adopted the wrong strategy. This is the opinion of national men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi after watching Aaron-Wooi Yik go down 15-21, 14-21 to Indonesia's Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Shohibul Fikri in the Super 1000 tournament at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou. Herry believes that their early strategic errors opened the door for their opponents to dominate from the outset. 'We need to admit that Fajar-Muhammad Shohibul had a better game plan. We, on the other hand, used the wrong strategy in the first game and were left trailing in their wake. 'Their 'no-lift' play (driving the shuttle flat and at pace) was extremely good in the first game. Their attacking quality, especially in the first game, was excellent… they hardly made any mistakes,' he said when contacted by Bernama. Herry also admitted that the strong draught at the venue may have affected Aaron-Wooi Yik's momentum in the final. The defeat marks a worrying trend Aaron-Wooi Yik, the 2022 world champions and two-time Olympic bronze medallists who have now lost six consecutive Super 1000 finals, inluding the All England (2019, 2024); Thailand Open (2020); China Open (2023); and Indonesia Open (2023). For their win yesterday, Fajar-Muhammad Shohibul took home USD148,000 (about RM625,000), while runners-up Aaron-Wooi Yik pocketed USD70,000 (about RM296,000). — Bernama

Shi reigns again, local stars rule the roost at China Open
Shi Yuqi claimed his third Super 1000 title this year after winning the US$2 million BWF China Open in Changzhou yesterday. Third seed Shi defeated compatriot Wang Zhengxing 14-21, 21-14, 21-15 in the final to claim back-to-back titles after his victory at the Japan Open a week earlier. It was his third World Tour Super 1000 crown in 2025 after his victories at the Malaysia Open and All England Open. The Japan Open tournament was a Super 750 event. The Chinese players won three other finals yesterday as the local stars dominated the tournament again. Top seeds Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping claimed their fourth title of the year, taking the mixed doubles crown after beating fellow Chinese, second seeds Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin, 23-21, 21-17. In women's doubles final, top seeds Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning won their third straight World Tour title after they rallied to beat Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian 24-22, 17-21, 21-14 in another all-Chinese clash. Chinese second seed Wang Zhiyi was crowned women's singles championwith a 21-8, 21-13 win over fourth seeded compatriot Han Yue. The men's doubles decider was the only final that did not feature any Chinese players, with Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri of Indonesia defeating second seeds Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia 21-15, 21-14.

It was another strong showing for world number three Shi following his Japan Open title last week. The 29-year-old came back from a game down to beat Wang Zhengxing 14-21 21-14 21-15 in little more than an hour. Wang had a narrow 7-5 lead early in the second game, but Shi took over from there, dominating the rallies and never trailing again. It was Shi's third Super 1000 title of the year after winning the Malaysia Open and the All England Open. In the women's final, defending champion Wang Zhiyi secured a dominant 21-8 21-13 win over Han Yue, who had advanced after South Korea's reigning Olympic champion An Se-young retired injured in the semi-finals. The 24-year-old world number two ended a frustrating run of three straight Super 1000 final defeats this year, all to world number one An. It was Wang's second title of the year, adding to her Malaysia Masters win, where she also beat Han in the final. Wang surged to a 13-4 lead in the opener and though Han tried to claw back in the second game, narrowing the gap to 17-13, Wang's sharp movement and relentless aggression helped her close out the match in just over half an hour. China's supremacy on home soil could not be questioned as foreign players fell at the semi-final stage in all formats except for the men's doubles, which was won by Indonesians Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri. The pair beat Malaysian second seeded duo Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi-Yik 21-15 21-14 and performed the viral "aura farming" Indonesian boat race dance in front of the Chinese crowd, much to their delight. It was the first time in a decade that an unseeded men's pair has won the China Open. In women's doubles, top seeds Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning overcame Zhang Shuxian and Jia Yifan 24-22 17-21 21-14. Aaron-Wooi Yik eye Paris redemption
KUALA LUMPUR: Men's pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik want to win something bigger to make up for the China Open heartbreak today. What could be bigger than the China Open which is already a Super 1000 tournament? There is one, and Aaron-Wooi Yik did not hide their intentions. Win the Paris World Championships next month. World No 2 Aaron-Wooi Yik believe they can do it again, having won the world crown in 2022. Till today, they are the only Malaysian shuttlers to have won a world title. Aaron-Wooi Yik failed again to win their first Super 1000 title — in six attempts — after a 21-15, 21-14 loss to Indonesia's new pair Fajar Alfian-Shohibul Fikri in Changzhou today. "We want to focus on our preparation for the World Championships. The gold in Paris is the ultimate goal for any pair," said Aaron. "We'll head home, recover, and get back on court to prepare well for the event." Perhaps, it should come as a relief to Aaron-Wooi Yik that Fajar-Shohibul will not compete as a pair in Paris despite their blistering performance in the China Open. Fajar will resume his partnership with his regular partner, Rian Ardianto. Wooi Yik acknowledged that while there will be high expectations for a podium finish in Paris, he believes they can deliver under top notch coach Herry IP.
