Mumbai, Aug 17 (PTI) Two people have died and more than 300 sustained injuries during the 'Dahi Handi' festival in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane city that drew large crowds of people, civic officials said on Sunday.
Of the 318 persons injured in Mumbai, only 24, including a nine-year-old boy, have been hospitalised while the rest were discharged after treatment on Saturday, they said.
The festival, celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, saw troupes of young men and women forming human pyramids to break dahi handis (pots of curd) suspended in the air with ropes.
According to officials, the highest number of 135 people were injured during the festivities in the island city, followed by 111 and 72 in the western and eastern suburbs, respectively.
Two of the injured persons, including a nine-year-old boy, are in a critical condition, they said.
The boy, identified as Aryan Yadav, a resident of Tanaji Nagar, was injured during celebrations at a chawl and is undergoing treatment at a civic-run hospital in Kandivali, while Shreyas Chalke (23) has been admitted to government-run GT Hospital.
Among the casualties, a 32-year-old man, identified as Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhari, fell to his death while tying a 'dahi handi' in Mankhurd in the northeastern part of the metropolis, and a 14-year-old boy was declared dead at a hospital in Ghatkopar on Saturday night.
'Chaudhari was tying the handi to a rope from the first-floor window grille of his house in Maharashtra Nagar when he fell. He was taken to the civic-run Shatabdi Govandi Hospital, where he was declared brought dead," an official said.
Rohan Mohan Malvi, who was part of the Gaondevi Govinda Pathak, fell unconscious while sitting in a tempo at Adarsh Nagar in the Andheri area. He did not take part in the pyramid formation since he recently suffered a bout of jaundice.
In the neighbouring Thane city, 22 participants were injured while attempting human pyramids, local civic body's disaster management cell chief Yasin Tadvi said.
Of them, 17 were admitted to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, including some who suffered head injuries, shoulder dislocations, waist and chest injuries, he said.
An 18-year-old participant, who suffered a head injury, was referred to the state-run J J Hospital in Mumbai for advanced care. Some of the others injured were children in the age group of 5 to 10 years, the official said.
Another five persons were admitted to the District Government Hospital in Thane, with injuries ranging from hand fractures to back pain and abrasions, Tadvi said.
The festivities drew large crowds at multiple mandals in Thane, where actors Govinda, Chunky Pandey and Sunil Shetty joined the celebrations. PTI KK KRK BNM COR GK ARU

280 govindas injured in dahi handi celebrations

Mumbai: At least 280 Govindas were treated for injuries during Dahi Handi celebrations in Mumbai between Saturday morning and Sunday morning, with 29 requiring admission to civic hospitals. Two others, including a 14-year-old, died on the sidelines of the festivities, according to civic officials. Most of the injured were stable by Sunday, though six admitted to suburban hospitals were reported serious. Among them was nine-year-old Aryan Yadav, who was suspected of suffering brain injuries after participating in the event and was admitted to Bharatratna Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali. Doctors later clarified that his scans showed no signs of damage. "He is still under observation in the ICU and is being managed conservatively," one of the treating doctors said. KEM Hospital treated 67 patients on an OPD basis with nine admissions, all stable; Sion Hospital managed 12 OPD cases with one stable admission; Nair Hospital treated 15 OPD patients with five stable admissions requiring no surgery; Cooper Hospital had 14 OPD cases with no admissions, though six patients refused admission; Trauma Hospital treated 41 OPD cases with three stable admissions; while peripheral hospitals handled the highest load with 129 OPD cases and 11 admissions in total. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? We had to put him on a ventilator," said Dr Rajeev Redkar, a paediatric surgeon. "Subsequent investigations showed a fracture in the frontal part of the skull and damage to the bone around the eye. While there was no clot in the brain, there were concussions." The boy has since been stabilised without surgical intervention. "But a fall like that could have been fatal for any child," Dr Redkar said. While this child survived, another child in a similar incident did not. In Dahisar (E) last Sunday, an 11-year-old boy, Mahesh Jadhav, died after falling from the sixth tier of a Dahi Handi pyramid. Reflecting on decades of treating such cases, Dr Redkar added: "In the last 25 to 30 years of practice, I have seen paediatric injuries around these festivities increase. The greater burden of it is borne by the public hospitals." Another critical patient, Akshay Bandal, 40, was earlier rushed to GT Hospital with a brain haemorrhage and a frontal bone fracture on Saturday, according to doctors. He was later shifted to JJ Hospital, where he was admitted, said Pritish Gupta of the Maheshwari Jagdambai Mandal. Another 17 injured were rushed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Thane, and five others to Thane Civil Hospital. Cong: Tripura's healthcare ‘collapsed' under BJP

Agartala: Criticising the BJP-led govt in Tripura, the opposition Congress alleged the state's healthcare system has 'completely collapsed' even as chief minister Manik Saha is himself a doctor. Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty on Saturday alleged that instead of delivering quality healthcare, the state has witnessed corruption and medical negligence, leading to deaths. Reports from both govt and independent agencies have 'punctured' the much-publicised claim of a 'health revolution', he claimed. According to a recent report by the Union ministry of health and family welfare, Tripura ranked first among northeastern states in malaria and chikungunya cases in 2024-25, despite having only 44 lakh population as compared to Assam's over three crore, Chakraborty said. In 2023, the state recorded 22,412 malaria cases, nearly half of the northeast's total, while chikungunya cases rose from 1,557 in 2023 to 2,452 in Dec 2024, he said. Chakraborty said the report further revealed a disturbing rise in HIV cases. PTI Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
