Newcastle United Women set new attendance record for Championship game during Tyne-Wear derby
Newcastle United smashed the attendance record for the Championship as a crowd of 38,502 watched Becky Langley's side triumph 1-0 in the first-ever women's Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park — and also saw the Carabao Cup trophy paraded inside the stadium for the first time.
Shania Hayles, the substitute, scored a 78th-minute winner, rifling beyond Demi Lambourne into the Gallowgate End net, having been played through by Emily Murphy.

That strike proved the difference in a match that was low on clear-cut opportunities, but Newcastle did enough to clinch a league double over their neighbours.
Langley, Newcastle's manager, was sent-off in added time by Sophie Dennington, the referee, as emotions boiled over.
The previous second-tier record had been set in October in the reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light, when Becky Langley's Newcastle won 2-1 in front of 15,387 on Wearside, but that mark was more than doubled on Sunday.
A new club record was also set, exceeding the 28,565 who saw Newcastle beat Barnsley 2-1 in the FA Cup in November 2022 by almost 10,000.
Not only did the spectators in attendance get to witness a tasty affair, but also the first piece of major silverware that Newcastle's men have won in 56 years, exactly a week on from the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
Darren Eales, the CEO, and Bob Moncur — who captained Newcastle to the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, the club's most recent trophy success before this month's triumph for Eddie Howe's side — walked into the centre circle at the interval with the League Cup in hand, and hoisted it in front of their fans.
The record attendance further underlines the passion for football in the region.
Having already sold more than 28,000 tickets by midweek, a new mark was guaranteed during the build-up. With hundreds of walk-ups and on-the-day purchases, too,
Newcastle ended up opening up Level 7, the top tier of St James', to accommodate additional supporters.
Promotion remains a slim, if live, prospect for Newcastle, who have risen two divisions in the past two seasons. Langley's side have moved up to sixth in the Championship, displacing Sunderland, who are now one place and two points below their rivals.
Newcastle trail leaders Birmingham City by 10 points and, while they have two games in hand, they only have seven fixtures remaining, so are running out of time to claim the solitary automatic promotion slot to the Women's Super League (WSL).

Red Bull agree deal to buy Newcastle Falcons and keep Premiership club afloat

Brett Connon of Newcastle Falcons in action against Leicester Tigers during a Premiership match in May. Photograph:Red Bull has agreed a deal to buy Newcastle Falcons which includes a commitment to keep the club in the city and will ensure the Premiership remains a 10-team competition next season. Newcastle have been for sale for over a year, with owner Semore Kurdi no longer willing to fund multimillion-pound annual losses, leading to fears they could become the fourth Premiership club to go bust in the last two years after Wasps, Worcester and London Irish. Advertisement Related: An ugly pack and backs worth paying to watch: Bath have taken us back to the 1990s | Andy Bull Such has been the concern for Newcastle's future that the other Premiership clubs agreed in principle to provide a £4m loan to enable them to take part in the competition next season, with a nine-team top-flight not thought to be commercially viable. Red Bull is understood to have reach an agreement to take over the cash-strapped club however, and take on their £39m debts. These include £14.5m in unpaid treasury loans taken out during the Covid-19 pandemic. During negotiations with the Austrian energy drinks company the prospect of moving the club to the 26,000-capacity Darlington Arena 40 miles away was discussed, but the Guardian has been told that Red Bull's takeover plan involves Newcastle staying at Kingston Park, which has been their home for the past 35 years. Advertisement Red Bull's decision to stay in Newcastle is likely to be popular with the club's longsuffering fans, who did not see them win a single match last season and only two this as Steve Diamond's side finished bottom of the Premiership on both occasions. The company's vision for the club is understood to be based on using their brands and marketing expertise to gain support from younger people in the city, with several campaigns planned to appeal to Newcastle's student population. Given the company's footballing connections Red Bull is also expected to seek a close working relationship with Newcastle United. The club's outgoing sporting director Paul Mitchell previously worked at RB Leipzig. Newcastle will be Red Bull's first rugby purchase, but the club aligns with it's purchase model of snapping up underperforming sports teams with a business plan of transforming them into global brands. The company paid Ford just $1 to buy the failing Formula One team, Jaguar Racing, in 2004 and have successfully transformed them into giants of the sport, with Red Bull Racing winning eight world drivers' championships and six constructors' titles in the last 15 years. In addition to football clubs, RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and the New York Red Bulls, they also own 9.9% of Leeds United and are heavily involved in motor sport and winter sports. Advertisement Attracting a new owner such as Red Bull is also a coup for Premiership Rugby, who are seeing much-needed signs of growth for the sport. Viewing figures for Premiership matches on TNT Sport are up 10% on last season before Saturday's final between Bath and Leicester, with the increase 47% when the game directly follows a Premier League match. In another significant boost TNT Sport last month agreed a new five-year deal giving it exclusive live rights for every Premiership match until 2031. Red Bull and Newcastle declined to comment on the deal.

What has Dak Prescott ‘super excited' about the Cowboys' offense?
FRISCO, Texas — Dak Prescott's next five weeks will be a little different than this period of time earlier in his 10-year NFL career. The Dallas Cowboys franchise quarterback now has a fiancee and two daughters. The time between the end of minicamp and the start of training camp in late July is the best time for a player to get away from football. Advertisement But Prescott won't be getting too far. 'The main thing is the main thing,' he said. 'The family knows and makes sure that I work out, take care of my body, do the things necessary, so that's not going to change. After my training, after I do what I have to do, it'll be a lot of family time, a lot of time with the girls, traveling. A month, here, I'm very, very excited about and looking forward to.' Dak Prescott when asked about leaving a legacy on the Cowboys franchise: 'I want to win a championship. The legacy and things and whatever comes after I finish playing will take care of itself. I want to win a championship. I'll be damned if it's just for my legacy or for this… — Jon Machota (@jonmachota) June 12, 2025 The Cowboys wrapped their three-day minicamp at The Star on Thursday. The best news for Prescott is that he's healthy. He missed the final nine games last season because of a hamstring injury that needed to be surgically repaired. 'It's been a great offseason,' he said. 'It's going to continue to be a great offseason until we get to camp. Honestly, just the momentum, just staying healthy and the momentum of this minicamp, these OTAs and making sure that I'm not the only one who keeps that momentum, but the rest of the guys. And make sure some of these young guys are doing the things necessary and taking care of their bodies to hit the ground running when we get together in July.' One of the ways Prescott will keep players involved is with his regular late June trip with several of the team's skill-position players. They'll work on the field but also spend time building stronger bonds. 'You can catch passes, but you want them catching them from you, catching them from the quarterbacks,' Prescott said. 'And then there's that camaraderie. Getting those guys together, getting George (Pickens) here in the last couple months. (We) know him, we're growing. But just getting to know him better, deeper. Getting to know all the guys, especially with a new receiver's coach, right? These guys are coming in trying to change little things and little nuances. That just gives them another time to work together, so (I'm) super excited about the trip.' Pickens was Dallas' biggest offseason move. Even though players weren't in pads for minicamp, it's easy to see how dynamic the former Steelers wide receiver is, especially when lined up with All-Pro CeeDee Lamb. There were some character concerns with Pickens in Pittsburgh, which impacted the May trade that saw Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round pick sent to Dallas in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Advertisement Prescott hasn't seen any of those concerns. 'That's why I don't think you should ever really listen to what somebody else says about somebody,' he said. 'I think you should judge everyone— not judge, but find out for yourself who they are and allow them to reveal their character to you. 'The guy, he's been great, he's been phenomenal. He's a guy that loves football, loves his teammates. He's been excited every day that he's been here. He's been early. So, no concerns on the personal matters of GP and anything about it. Just super excited that he's on our team. He's one of us. He's a brother, and it's just about continuing to grow and make sure we're putting the best out there. That's his approach.' Dak Prescott — Jon Machota (@jonmachota) June 10, 2025 Arguably, the best play from minicamp came near the end of Wednesday's practice when Prescott found tight end Jake Ferguson down the seam for a touchdown catch in coverage. While there are questions about the running back position, which can't be answered in a minicamp setting, there should be no questions about the potential of the passing game. The combination of Lamb, Pickens, Ferguson, Jalen Tolbert, KaVontae Turpin and Jonathan Mingo gives Prescott an impressive arsenal of weapons that should cause plenty of problems for opposing defensive backs. Pickens pointed out Wednesday that these are the fastest teammates he has played alongside since he was at the University of Georgia. 'The team speed applies to the scheme too,' he said. 'If you got a lot of fast guys, you're gonna definitely have a different scheme.' This is the time of year when almost every NFL player and coach is going to be optimistic about the upcoming season. They've all made changes that they think will improve their team. Dallas is no different. Prescott has always been an optimist, so it will be no surprise if he feels good about the Cowboys when they begin training camp in late July. Advertisement 'I'm super excited,' he said. 'We've made some changes, personnel and the scheme, that will just come with it. I think (Brian Schottenheimer) has done a good job this minicamp of putting guys in the right places, putting guys in space and allowing guys to see how he's going to use them.'
