Former Bills Pro Bowler views Patriots as team's biggest threat
The Patriots generated considerable buzz this offseason after hiring Mike Vrabel as head coach and completely revamping their coaching staff and roster. Like the Washington Commanders last season, some have wondered if the Patriots will be the next 4-13 team to morph into a playoff contender overnight.
Who knows what the postseason future holds for New England, but they could present a real problem to the current king of the AFC East.
"To me, the team with the most upside is the Patriots," Wood said on The Jim Rome Show. "Now, will this be their year this year? I'm not sure. Can Drake Maye take that next step this year, or is he maybe a year or so away from potentially contending or going toe-to-toe with Josh Allen? I've always been a big Mike Vrabel guy. I like him, I like the way his teams play with toughness. Does he have the quarterback now to get them over the hump? Potentially.'
The Patriots have the opportunity to make some noise as soon as this season.
Second-year quarterback Drake Maye has already teased significant growth, and the offensive weapons around him have improved. Whether the offensive line has improved enough might ultimately make or break the team. Enough has changed for the Bills to start taking the Patriots seriously.
This is not the same team they've big-brothered in recent years.

Bears CB Jaylon Johnson's pregame workout is positive sign for Week 1 return
Chicago Bears superstar cornerback Jaylon Johnson has been missing throughout training camp and preseason due to a leg injury suffered before training camp. But there was reason for optimism ahead of Sunday night's game against the Buffalo Bills. Head coach Ben Johnson has reiterated that Johnson is on track to return for the Week 1 opener against the Minnesota Vikings, and this most recent update shows a big step in Johnson's recovery. Matt Zahn of CBS Chicago posted a video of Johnson getting a workout in on the field at Soldier Field on Sunday, noting that the cornerback looks much improved from his recent leg injury. Johnson's health will be key for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and defensive backs coach Al Harris, who undoubtedly need their top player healthy when the regular season begins. With Johnson and Kyler Gordon (also injured with a hamstring injury that has him week-to-week) leading the way, the Bears are expected to have one of the most talented and productive secondaries in the NFL. And Johnson, who is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and Second-Team All-Pro selection, will look to build on his previous success. Follow Bears Wire on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram

It will be the first time Williams starts under center with new head coach Ben Johnson calling the plays. Williams did not quite live up to expectations during his rookie season, but could be in line for a massive bounce-back year now that Johnson is in town. The former Heisman Trophy winner has all the talent to be one of the top passers in the NFL if he continues to develop. The Bills will be one of the most exciting teams in the league come the regular season, but they will likely not play their starters much during the preseason. Josh Allen and most of the starters sat out the first preseason game as they look to stay healthy entering the year. Buffalo has as good a shot as anyone to make it to the Super Bowl this season. Where should fantasy managers look to draft TreVeyon Henderson?
Yahoo Fantasy's Matt Harmon and Justin Boone examine the fantasy outlook for the Patriots rookie RB TreVeyon Henderson through two preseason games. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript The star of the preseason, let's say, is Travon Henderson. I think he's probably going to be the picture on this show. Um, you know, we had a clip that got posted last week when we talked about him, and I always find it funny when you talk about a player who's kind of on the rise like this, especially a rookie, especially in the summer, and you get people responding to it and some people are responding to it saying like, yeah, obviously, we already know that guy's great. How, how, why are you talking about him? It's a waste of time, right? And then you get people like, you know. Mad that you're going to push his ADP up, that they don't want you talking about him because they're not going to be able to get him at the same price that they've been getting him at in their mock drafts. Like, all of that is so funny to me. I love those comments. Keep them coming. I laugh when I see them, and we're not going to stop talking about guys that are on the rise, even if they are obvious players, because we're trying to throw that blanket over all of this, right? And there's some people that no ball and are hardcore fantasy players, and there's some people like some of my friends that just show up. This time of year, and they're trying to play catch up on who's on what team and what's going on, and we got to do stuff for them as well. We got to make sure they know about somebody like Travon Henderson who has just been crushing it, right? And we don't have to spend a ton of time because we've already talked about him on the show, but he continues to look great. 8 touches for 50 scrimmage yards and a touchdown through 2 preseason games. It just gives you like that glimpse of what he's capable of. And Rhamondre Stevenson is still going to be involved. I said this when we did the running back show the other day. When Jamir Gibbs had his rookie season, David Montgomery was still involved, and Jamir Gibbs on a per game basis was the RB 11 in half PPR fantasy points per game. So we could see a very big season from Henderson even if Stevenson is still getting a lot of work in that offense. I'm going to take him in the 4th round. That's a smash pick in the 4th round, even though we were getting him in the 5th and maybe even the 6th earlier this summer. Take him in the 4th. The third, I've seen him going in some leagues, that might be a little bit rich for me. He might pay that off, but I don't think you need to go that high with it. If someone wants to take him in the third, I'm gonna let them do it, and I'm gonna find somebody else. Close
