Tom Cruise's new flame Ana de Armas faces Mission Impossible over demands of Scientology that drove Katie Holmes to call it quits
Cruise and Knives Out star Ana de Armas, 37, were first seen together in February 2025 and who will be co-starring in the upcoming Doug Liman supernatural thriller, Deeper, strolled through the picturesque town of Woodstock, where they picked up ice cream cones and waved away paparazzi.
But according to those familiar with Cruise's past loves, de Armas, who grew up in a devout Catholic family, is facing a real-life Mission Impossible in embarking on a relationship with the world's most famous Scientologist.
The Cuban-born actress, who has starred in a slew of films in both English and Spanish, survived a nearly yearlong Covid-era romance with Ben Affleck, with whom she shared a home in Venice before they split in early 2021.
But taking up with one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, who is also high in the Church of Scientology, could prove daunting.
Former Scientologists as well as longtime observers say that Cruise's women often start off starry-eyed and impressed with both the megastar and his 'church,' but there's almost always a point when they get in too deep and want out.
'Tom Cruise's love affairs are doomed,' Karen de la Carriere, who was one of the highest-ranking Scientologists and one of the few to be directly trained by founder L. Ron Hubbard who defected from the church in 2010, told the Daily Mail.
'There is a honeymoon period with a lot of generosity and dazzling moments, and then reality sets in.'
That reality, according to de la Carriere, occurs when the girlfriends and wives of Cruise, who often begin by taking low-level Scientology courses and undergoing auditing, are eventually faced with some of the church's more outlandish, science fiction-like aspects.
Scientologists, as directed by Hubbard, believe that humans are immortal spiritual beings (Thetans) haunted by alien souls from a mass extermination 75 million years ago, and that they can be saved only by expensive spiritual cleansing.
'Scientology is very bait and switch,' de la Carriere told the Daily Mail. 'It starts off OK, especially when you're the girlfriend of a superstar like Tom Cruise.
'But then you get to the higher, confidential levels and you find out things like you have 400,000 spirits attached to you and you have to spend the next 30 to 40 years peeling them off.
'So suddenly the person is entering the world of the bizarre, and that's when the pullback occurs. Who wants to be told they have to start going to five sessions to exorcise those spirits? Nobody.'
Cruise's first wife, Mimi Rogers, now 69, is the one who introduced Cruise to the controversial religion when they began dating in the mid-1980s – but she has since left the church herself.
His second wife, Nicole Kidman, 58, dove headfirst into Scientology's courses and auditing and rapidly achieved the rank of OT2 thanks to Cruise's fame and importance in the church.
But she reportedly soured on it so much after that point that she and Cruise both backed off from Scientology – and ultimately divorced after eleven years of marriage in 2001.
Next came Penelope Cruz, 51. She and Cruz dated for three years and Cruz took Scientology courses 'which she found beneficial' although her rep says she was never a member of the church
Katie Holmes, 46, married Cruise in 2006 and was so gung-ho about the church at the start that she filed an official report against Leah Remini at the time of her splashy wedding to Tom in Italy because Remini had been vocal about Scientology leader David Miscavige's missing wife, Shelly.
She also spoke publicly when she and Cruise were still dating about having started some Scientology courses and auditing.
His second wife, Nicole Kidman quickly advanced to OT2 in Scientology thanks to Cruise's influence, but grew disillusioned, leading her to distance herself from the church before their 2001 divorce
But Holmes had changed her tune by 2012 when she famously turned the tables on Cruise, filing for divorce and taking their then 6-year-old daughter Suri when Cruise was shooting a movie in Iceland.
'Katie would have seen (Cruise's adopted children) Isabella and Connor going through their interrogations and auditing,' journalist Tony Ortega, who has investigated Scientology for decades, told the Daily Mail.
'It's about the age of six when they start the courses, and that's about the age Suri was when Katie left Tom.
'Listen, I can't fault these women. They fall in love with the guy. There's nothing wrong with wanting to be part of your partner's lives. It's just that Scientology becomes too much to deal with.'
Ortega reported Thursday on his Underground Bunker Substack that Kidman's long-ago Scientology auditor, Bruce Hines, said that Kidman rose up the ranks in Scientology study much faster than the normal initiate when she was married to Cruise.
Hines said that Cruise and Kidman spent many weeks at various times at what Scientologists call 'Int Base' or 'Gold Base' near the town of Hemet in Riverside County, California, which serves as the corporate headquarters of the church.
'They had a course room set up just for them with their own 'Course Supervisor' and their own 'Word Clearer' (someone who helps a Scientologist look up the meaning of words),' Hines said. 'Tom and Nicole could get many auditing sessions per day, seven days a week, if they wanted. Their auditors were on full-time standby.'
Ortega and others have long reported that Kidman and Cruise drifted away from the church during the latter years of their marriage, but after their divorce, Scientology leader David Miscavige made a successful, push to get Cruise back in the fold.
Kidman almost never comments on Scientology, Cruise or the two children she and Tom adopted, Bella, now 32, and Connor, 30, who lived mainly with Cruise after their divorce.
Kidman has been married to country star Keith Urban since 2006, and they have two daughters.
Neither she nor Holmes are now involved with Scientology.
Scientology sources are divided when it comes to whether they think Ana de Armas will start looking into Scientology because of her apparently blossoming romance with Cruise.
'She'll have to be indoctrinated,' predicted composer and songwriter Geoffrey Levin, 79, who was with the church for more than 50 years and was around Cruise and Kidman at the Celebrity Centre before leaving around 2018.
'She's going to essentially have to learn the language of Scientology too. Otherwise, when you go to events, it's like hearing Greek or something. The real issue is what she wants from the relationship deep down.'
De la Carriere told the Daily Mail that she believes Cruise may have drifted somewhat from the church in recent years, although he's still an avowed member.
'You don't see him out promoting Scientology at events and you don't see him photographed with Miscavige anymore,' de la Carriere said. 'He's just not in that Bible-thumping phase anymore.
'I wonder if that will be less pressure on this new girl to get involved.'
But Ortega said that he hears that Cruise is as tight as ever with Miscavige and very much involved in the church.
'Bruce Hines told me that being Tom Cruise's girlfriend or wife is a very intense experience. Everybody who knows him well says he has energy that he could use to power a small city.
'Tom would run around saying constantly "Where's Nic, where's Nic" – he's on all the time. When he gets into a relationship, he's really intense about it. But at the same time, he brings with him all the baggage that comes with him from Scientology.'
Levin was working in Scientology's notorious Celebrity Centre when Cruise and Kidman were first married.
'When Nicole got her first taste of Scientology, it was at the Celebrity Centre,' Levin told the Daily Mail.
'Back then especially, it was very impressive. It looked like the equivalent of a high-end museum. As Tom's wife, she got the royal treatment. Nobody else got that kind of treatment.
'This was before a lot of the bad press about Scientology, so you can imagine she had no idea what it was really like behind the curtain.'
Levin said Cruise came off, on the surface at least, as warm, courteous and helpful when Levin had dealings with him. He remembered Kidman as 'warm and friendly' as well.
'Then the luster wore off for Kidman and she started to see what had been hidden,' Levin said.

Severance star on huge role he missed out on
Adam Scott, known for ' Severance ', revealed that losing the role of David Fisher in HBO's 'Six Feet Under' was a particularly "painful" career rejection. The part ultimately went to Michael C. Hall, who Scott acknowledged was perfectly cast for the role. Scott admitted that the rejection was so devastating it made him consider quitting acting, as 'Six Feet Under' was a highly acclaimed show at the time. Despite not securing the main role, Scott later made a guest appearance in the show's second season as Hall's onscreen boyfriend, Ben Cooper. Scott went on to achieve significant success, notably as Ben Wyatt in 'Parks and Recreation' and currently as the lead in the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series 'Severance', for which he has received Emmy nominations.

Glamorous former tennis star makes rare public appearance after remarkable recovery from health scare
She is one of the most glamorous athletes to have graced the tennis court, reaching a career-high single ranking of world No 8 and being voted the world's sexiest woman. But this week the former tennis icon was in full mom-mode as she stepped out with her brood just months after sparking fears. Earlier this year, Anna Kournikova left her fans concerned when she was spotted in a wheelchair wearing a protective boot during a rare public appearance. Yet, eight months later, there appeared to be nothing holding the sports star turned model back as she stepped out with her children in Miami Beach - without a wheelchair or a boot. In photos exclusive to the Daily Mail, the 44-year-old was captured taking her three children - twins Lucy and Nicholas, seven, and five-year-old Mary - to martial arts class. The mother-of-three's foot appeared to be in good shape as she guided her brood across the road and into the gym in the south Florida island city. Kournikova kept it casual in a white hoodie, black bike shorts and Nike sneakers, scraping her hair into a black scrunchie atop her head. Her children, meanwhile, appeared well-equipped for their karate class, carrying packed backpacks, while her eldest daughter Lucy clutched a giant fluffy teddy bear. The Russian, who retired from tennis in 2003, shares the trio of youngsters with Spanish singer and longtime partner, Enrique Iglesias. The couple, who met on the set of the hitmaker's music video for his 2001 single 'Escape,' have kept a low profile in recent years. While the 50-year-old Iglesias has been performing to his adoring fans on tour, tennis fans are only granted rare glimpses of Kournikova. But back in January, she was spotted in the wheelchair while out with loved ones at Bal Harbour, a luxurious shopping center in Miami. Kournikova was pictured wearing an orthopedic boot on her foot, suggesting she had suffered a recent injury scare but she appeared to have a clear bill of health as she surfaced out-and-about in the SoFlo neighborhood this week. Iglesias has lived in the Miami area since the late 1990s with Kournikova joining the heartthrob after the couple shacked up. And the 'Hero' singer added to their property portfolio earlier this year, purchasing another property in Bay Point, a gated community located in Miami Beach. Iglesias reportedly splashed out $6.5 million on a 'sprawling mid century' home, built in 1957, on the same block where the under the radar couple reside, Sabal Palm Road, according to the Miami Herald. The five-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom house is nestled in one of Miami's most sought-after communities as Kournikova and Iglesias continue to raise their children. Kournikova called time on her tennis career back in May 2003 after winning 16 career doubles titles. She reached world No 1 in doubles in November 1999, a few months after winning the Australian Open alongside partner Martina Hingis. In singles, Kournikova reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 1997, becoming only the second woman in the open era to make it to the last four in her SW19 debut. She lost to eventual champion Hingis. Kournikova was then a quarterfinalist at the 2001 Australian Open, before being forced into an early retirement at just 21 years old following a series of injuries, mainly back problems. Kournikova also enjoyed the spotlight away from the court, garnering fame as a model. In 2002, she was voted the world's sexiest woman, beating the likes of Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez, and was also acknowledged as the sexiest female tennis player of all time in 2010. The couple met on the set of the Spanish singer's music video for his hit 'Escape' in 2001 It was through her off-court ventures that she met Iglesias, the son of Spanish singer and former soccer star Julio Iglesias. The greatest mystery surrounding their relationship is if the couple have tied the knot or not. Iglesias previously insisted he wasn't concerned about getting married but he has also referred to Kournikova as 'my wife.' When questioned about referring to Anna as his 'wife' in 2012, he clarified: 'It was just meant to be sweet in the moment. I honestly didn't mean to confuse people. I thought it'd be easier for the audience to understand than if I said 'my girl.' 'I've never really thought marriage would make a difference. Maybe it's because I come from divorced parents, but I don't think you love someone more because of a piece of paper. 'And nowadays, it's not taboo to have kids and not be married. What makes a difference is that you're a good parent, period.'

Chicago Dem lawmaker twirls in gorgeous gown at awards ceremony as her ward suffers horrific floods
A Chicago alderwoman has come under fire for being out of town for leisure while her ward back home battled catastrophic flooding and severe weather. Democratic Alderwoman Stephanie Coleman posted videos of herself twirling in a satin yellow ball gown inside her Nashville hotel, her hair and makeup styled alongside her $6,500 black quilted goatskin Chanel vanity bag. But the 16th Ward lawmaker was slammed for 'prancing around' at the 40th Annual Stellar Awards on Saturday night - while residents in her district struggled to cope with devastating storms. 'If you are a 16th Ward resident, are experiencing severe flooding, and you can't get ahold of your alderman to get help, we found Stephanie Coleman for you,' the Chicago Contrarian wrote in a post on X. 'Coleman is in Nashville, filming herself prancing around, indulging in a pathetic fantasy she is a runway model.' Coleman, first elected in 2019, represents the 16th Ward, which covers Englewood, West Englewood, Chicago Lawn and Gage Park. Aldermen are considered the first line of contact for residents during city emergencies, from snowstorms to floods. Despite the extreme weather facing her constituents, Coleman herself posted a carousel of photos from the event, gushing: 'What a night! Truly blessed to have been at the 40th Annual Stellar Awards. Gospel music at its very best!' She said the highlight of her night was watching the Albertina Walker Female Artist of the Year award - named after her godmother - presented to Dr. Dorinda Clark Cole, a moment she described as 'unforgettable.' While the lawmaker was enjoying herself in Tennessee, Illinois's plight begun at 3.30pm on Saturday afternoon, with severe thunderstorm warnings across the state. By 5pm, the red weather alert for 60mph winds and hailstorms had covered the area of Chicago, including O'Hare Airport - just miles north of the area governed by Coleman. And by 7.30pm on Saturday, a flash flood warning was issued for Naperville and Woodridge, Illinois, warning locals to move to higher ground immediately. Coleman's official office is around 25 miles from there. According to the National Weather Service, Coleman's district was listed as being affected by heavy downpours and gusty winds through to 10pm on Saturday. At 2:45am on Sunday morning, a special weather alert warning of 50mph winds was issued for Cicero, which is just six miles from Coleman's district of Gage Park. The fast-moving weather front culminated on Coleman's doorstep in the early hours of Sunday morning - at a time when her festivities would have been wrapping up. At 3.15am on Sunday, Coleman's entire ward was issued a severe thunderstorm and red flash flood warning - bringing 60mph gusts, hail, and warning all residents to relocate to higher ground as they were pummeled with torrential rain. Locals across her constituency, just south of central Chicago, were warned by the National Weather Service to avoid moving through flood waters, all while Coleman was enjoying herself 470 miles away. At 1pm on Monday, the whole Chicago area was put on a severe thunderstorm watch again - this time with the possibility of tornadoes, hail, and 70mph winds to hit. National Weather Service Chicago wrote in a statement: 'Strong to severe storms possible today and tonight. Highest chance of severe weather is from 1 PM to 10 PM with storms capable of producing damaging straight-line winds and brief tornadoes. 'Lightning and torrential rainfall are also possible.' Sports games were also affected due to the summer storms - with the Cubs game being rescheduled on Monday night. Coleman decided to share her video, showing off her dress and the fun she had, at the same time her constituents were bracing for the next batch of extreme weather. Photos from across the Chicago area, as well as northwest Indiana, showed cars stranded on water-logged streets, underpasses closed, and residents attempting to wade through rising floodwaters. The storms were so devastating that Chicago Mayor Johnson intervened on Tuesday, pledging full government support for South Side flood victims and vowing aid will continue until families are fully restored. On Monday, hours before posting her glam photos to Instagram, Coleman's area was hit with a tornado, hail, and severe wind warning The alderwoman faced harsh criticism from locals for not being present while they faced the dire weather warnings. One person wrote: 'Crazy. This is what represents Chicago citizens,' while another added: 'She's not a serious person.' And a third said: 'All on your dime. Wow. Just wow.' Another user said: 'Why are these people elected?????' Before posting her glitzy photos from the event, Coleman made an attempt to help out her constituents on Monday afternoon - simply reposting an infographic made by the Chicago Office of Emergency Management informing people on the numbers to call.
