Frank Sinatra lived a life of glamour and splendor, so for many to learn his final car was a 1985 Chrysler LeBaron Town & Country is a bit disappointing. After all, the many cruised around in luxurious Cadillacs and the like, not some common station wagon with faux wood paneling.That said, images and video of the turbocharged wagon, something back in the day you'd expect to see a soccer mom driving, show it's still in great shape. Not only does the paint look good, so do those 'wood' panels. And there's zero signs of rust or corrosion anywhere.
Even more impressive, the powertrain still purrs like a kitten, which is better than what you could say about most LeBarons of this generation. Chrysler would like you to forget around these engines entirely.
The interior looks similarly clean as the exterior. There are no visible tears or splitting in the leather upholstery, the door panels look complete, the dash is also whole and not cracked, and all the carpeting looks nearly fresh. In fact, the only real blemish seems to be the headliner sagging a little.
Back when it was auctioned off in February 2019 this wagon made a bit of a stir was people were reminded how Sinatra spent his last moments in a car.
But auction house H&H Classics says Sinatra didn't drive the wagon, but instead was chauffeured in it around Las Vegas. That's actually genius because nobody would think anything of this Chrysler and they certainly wouldn't suspect the crooner was sitting in the backseat.
Perhaps Sinatra had enough of the luxurious life and in his later years valued the kind of privacy traveling around in a K-car provided instead of something flashier. There's something of wisdom which can come with old age.
