Gunman kills 5 and wounds 2 at a Bangkok market before killing himself, police say
BANGKOK (AP) — A gunman shot and killed five people at a popular fresh food market in the Thai capital on Monday before killing himself, police said.
The victims included security guards at the Or Tor Kor market in the district of Chatuchak district in Bangkok, according to a police statement. The Erawan Medical Center, which coordinates emergency medical services, reported two women were also wounded.
The market, next to the sprawling Chatuchak weekend Market, carries all sorts of goods and is popular with Thai and foreign tourists.
A video circulating online reportedly showed the shooter wearing a baseball cap and shorts walking in the market with a backpack strapped to his chest and a handgun in his right hand.
Police said they were probing details about the suspect, including his motivation.
Police Gen. Kitrat Phanphet, chief of the national police force, said he has ordered city police to carry out their investigation quickly and gather all evidence, including closed-circuit video footage.
Gun violence is not unusual in Thailand, which has fairly restrictive laws but also a high level of gun ownership.
The last mass shooting incident in Bangkok was in October 2023 when a teenage boy, using a modified blank pistol, shot more than half a dozen people at the Paragon shopping mall in the city's main shopping district, killing three.
One of the country's worst mass killings occurred in October 2022 in the northeastern province of Nong Bua Lamphua, when a police sergeant who had lost his job used guns and knives to kill 36 people, including two dozen toddlers at a day care center.
In February 2020, a disgruntled Thai army soldier shot and killed 29 people, most at a shopping mall in the northeastern city of Nakhon Ratchasima, before he was killed by police after an 18-hour standoff.

Suspect faces Arkansas judge McGann, who has been charged with two counts of capital murder, made his first appearance on Friday before an Arkansas judge, who ordered McGann to be held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center, assigned him a public defender and scheduled his arraignment for Aug. 25. Washington County prosecutor Brandon Carter indicated the state would give a jury the option to sentence McGann to the death penalty. Suspect is a newly hired teacher Springdale Public Schools in northwest Arkansas said it had hired McGann for the upcoming year but that he had not yet had contact with families or students. He has active teaching licenses with no infractions or suspensions in Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma, according to government certification websites. McGann was placed on administrative leave in spring 2023 while he was employed at Donald Elementary School in Flower Mound, Texas, 'following concerns related to classroom management, professional judgment, and student favoritism,' according to a spokesperson for the Lewisville Independent School District. He resigned from the school in May 2023.

London man pleads guilty in 2020 shooting death, claims no motive
A 21 year old London man pleaded guilty on Friday morning to second degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a man he killed five years ago on July 31. In an agreed statement of facts (ASF), a Sarnia courtroom heard how on July 31, 2020, David Oliver, 29, of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation was shot in the head twice while smoking marijuana with the man who pulled the trigger. The man who pleaded guilty cannot be identified because at the time of the shooting he was 17 years old. The court heard how the two men were known to each other and were sitting in two separate vehicles near Army Camp Road in the summer of 2020 when they decided to share a joint. According to the ASF, something came over the teenager that night who had a firearm in his truck, 'He had a sudden feeling to pick up a loaded .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle and shoot David.' Later it stated, 'He proceeded to empty the magazine of the firearm which was approximately 10 shots…he wasn't thinking and doesn't know why he did it.' (Source: Carla Rogers / Facebook) In the months and years following the killing, OPP interviewed the suspect several times, even getting an undercover officer to befriend the man. The court heard, 'He initially denied any involvement in the murder of David.' However in the fall of 2024 he confessed saying, 'He did not know why he killed David and he did not plan it.' Before any arrests were made in the case, OPP and Crime Stoppers would offer a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the killer. On Friday, the courtroom was packed with the victim's family and friends with standing room only for the proceedings. At the end of the ASF the court heard, 'He would like to tell the Oliver family that he is sorry for everything and sorry for hurting them. He is not asking for forgiveness and is taking responsibility.' The man will be back in court on on Oct. 20 for his sentencing hearing.

Police were contacted around 3 p.m. July 25 and were told of a theft in progress at a private residence. 'The complainant, concerned about ongoing suspicious activity, had installed security cameras in their home,' Sudbury police said in a news release Friday. 'Footage revealed a personal support worker entering rooms without authorization and handling a household safe. Following the incident, the resident discovered a substantial amount of cash missing from the safe.' 'The complainant, concerned about ongoing suspicious activity, had installed security cameras in their home.' Police arrived at the residence around 4:20 p.m. the same day to investigate. 'Based on the evidence, officers had reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence had occurred,' police said. The 49-year-old suspect has been charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. She was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 27. Police believe there may be additional victims connected to the individual charged in the case. Anyone with information or who believes they may have been affected is urged to contact the Greater Sudbury Police Service at 705-675-9171. 'The Greater Sudbury Police Service encourages residents to consider installing video surveillance if they suspect suspicious activity in or around their home,' police said. 'Surveillance footage can be a valuable tool in protecting property and supporting investigations.'
