Bitcoin tops US$110,000 for first time as US optimism lifts crypto

Business Times22-05-2025

[KUALA LUMPUR] Bitcoin surpassed US$110,000 for the first time to head towards another record high, with traders increasingly bullish on the prospects of the original cryptocurrency.
Bitcoin climbed as much as 2.2 per cent in early Asian trading on Thursday (May 22) to hit US$110,707, before paring gains, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
A wave of optimism is buoying Bitcoin after the advancement of a key stablecoin bill in the US Senate fuelled hopes of greater regulatory clarity for crypto operators. Surging demand from Michael Saylor's Strategy – which has stockpiled over US$50 billion worth of Bitcoin – and a growing list of digital-asset hoarders is another driving force behind the rally.
'It has been a slow motion grind into new all-time highs,' said Joshua Lim, global co-head of markets at FalconX. 'There's no shortage of demand for BTC from Spac and Pipe deals, which is manifesting in the premium on Coinbase spot prices.'
Such buyers include a flurry of obscure small-cap companies and public firms newly formed by crypto heavyweights which are financing their purchases by offering anything from convertible bonds to preferred stocks to finance.
An affiliate of Cantor Fitzgerald is working with stablecoin issuer Tether Holdings and SoftBank Group to launch Twenty One Capital, a company that emulates Strategy's business model. A subsidiary of Strive Enterprises co-founded by Vivek Ramaswamy is merging with Nasdaq-listed Asset Entities to form a Bitcoin treasury company.

In options markets, traders built eye-catching Bitcoin positions earlier this week with the US$110,000, US$120,000 and US$300,000 calls expiring on Jun 27 logging the most open interest – or number of outstanding contracts – on Deribit, the derivatives exchange.
Tony Sycamore, market analyst at IG, said in a note that the fresh record shows that Bitcoin's steep decline from a previous high set on Jan 20 to below US$75,000 in April was 'a correction within a bull market'.
'A sustained break above US$110,000 is needed to trigger the next leg higher towards US$125,000,' he added.
Bitcoin's latest milestone comes as Trump prepares to meet with the biggest holders of his memecoin at a dinner at his golf club just outside Washington on Thursday. The event has raised concerns among ethics experts, who argue that it offers access through transactions that directly benefit the president, and has sparked criticism over the potential conflict of interest. [SINGAPORE] Agribusiness giant Olam has secured a US$1.85 billion loan for general corporate purposes, said the company on Friday (May 30) via a bourse filing. The loan, which was taken by Olam Agri – the company's food, feed and fibre operating group – has a three-year tenor and will be disbursed in two tranches. PHOTO: ST FILE Singapore stocks fall as Trump tariffs resumes for now; STI retreats 0.6% SINGAPORE – The Trump tariff roller-coaster took another swing through markets on May 30 and helped depress shares across the region. The latest twist in the seemingly never-ending saga came when a US appeals court paused a ruling that blocked President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs, and in turn stopped Thursday's rally dead in its tracks. That left the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) down 0.6 per cent or 22.23 points to 3,894.6 with losers beating gainers 248 to 209 on trade of 1.3 billion securities worth $3.3 billion. Ms Ipek Ozkardeskaya, analyst at Swissquote Bank, said the optimism triggered by the initial ruling that halted the 'Liberation Day' tariffs 'turned out too good to be true' as it is now effectively on hold. 'If tariffs are ultimately found to be unlawful, the willingness of partners to make concessions during trade talks may shrink – not exactly ideal, especially given the critical window for negotiations,' she added. Regional indexes reacted negatively. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 1.2 per cent, South Korea's Kospi fell 0.8 per cent, the Nikkei 225 in Tokyo declined 1.2 per cent and Malaysian shares slipped 0.7 per cent. By contrast, Wall Street shrugged off the tariff news overnight and focused more on tech stocks after Nvidia posted robust earnings. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 both rose 0.4 per cent while the Dow Industrials added 0.3 per cent. Meanwhile, the STI was led by DFI Retail Group, which rose 3 per cent to US$2.76. After the market closed, the group said it will divest a 22.2 per cent stake in Robinsons Retail. DFI parent company Jardine Matheson did not fare so well, falling 2.4 per cent to US$44.50, after announcing that chief executive John Witt is retiring at the end of November. The local banks were in the red: DBS fell 0.6 per cent to $44.72; UOB declined 1.2 per cent to $35.41; and OCBC retreated 1 per cent to $16.23. China's central bank injects 700 billion yuan of outright reverse repos in May

[SHANGHAI] China's central bank has injected 700 billion yuan (S$125.5 billion) into its banking system during May through an outright reverse repurchase tool, the bank said on Friday (May 30). The operations, conducted with tenors of three and six months, were aimed at maintaining 'reasonably ample liquidity' in the banking system, the PBOC said in a statement. With 900 billion yuan in outright repos expiring this month, the data suggests a net withdrawal of 200 billion yuan from the system via the tool. In a separate statement, the PBOC said on Friday that it had refrained from buying or selling Chinese government bonds in open market operations for the fifth consecutive month in May. Market participants are closely watching for signals on when the PBOC will resume purchases of its own government bonds. 'Amid rising risks of US-China decoupling, there is growing urgency to resume government bond trading to increase the central bank's holdings of sovereign debt,' analysts at Caitong Securities said in a note on Thursday. The analysts expect the PBOC to resume bond buying as early as July or August, amid concerns that a potential end to the tariff truce between China and the United States could weigh on economic sentiment.
