Air India flight from San Francisco to Mumbai suffers technical snag, passengers deboarded in Kolkata
Kolkata: An Air India Flight from San Francisco to Mumbai via Kolkata was halted at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata early Tuesday morning after a technical snag was detected in one of its engines.
The flight (AI-180) landed at Kolkata Airport at around 12.45 a.m. It was supposed to take off for Mumbai at 2 a.m. and land at Mumbai airport at 4.50 a.m.
However, the flight could not take off from Kolkata Airport in time because of technical snags detected in one of its engines. Finally, at around 5.20 a.m., the captain of the flight requested the passengers to disembark from the flight.
The captain also informed the passengers that the decision was being taken in the interest of flight safety.
After the passenger disembarked, the plane was taken to the airport tarmac. Thereafter, the members of the ground staff and the technical staff started checking the technical difficulties arising in one of the engines of the plane.
All the passengers are reportedly safe. As per the last report available, AI-180 is still at Kolkata Airport undergoing technical checks. An alternative flight is reportedly being arranged for the passengers travelling by AI-180.
To recall, on June 12, an Air India flight crashed en route from Ahmedabad to London's Gatwick Airport. It crashed into a hostel of doctors, moments after taking off from Ahmedabad airport, killing all but one passenger.
Again this week, Air India Express flight IX 1511 was detected with a fault before departing from Hindon Airport in Uttar Pradesh for Kolkata. The error was discovered when the pilot was preparing to take off from the runway.
The plane was stuck on the runway for about an hour due to the turbulence. However, the plane later departed for its destination.
Now, on early Tuesday morning, AI-180 could not take off from Kolkata Airport following technical snags in one of its engines.

New Delhi: A Delhi-Paris Air India flight, AI 143, has been cancelled for Tuesday after "mandatory pre-flight checks identified an issue", the airline said in a statement this evening. Consequently, the return service, Air India flight AI 142, scheduled to fly from Paris to Delhi on Wednesday, has also been cancelled. The issue flagged by pre-flight checks "is being addressed", an airline spokesperson said, but the delay means AI 143 will run afoul of restrictions on night-time operations at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport. "We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers and are making alternative arrangements... We are providing hotel accommodation and also offering full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling, if opted for by the passengers," the airline said. This is the second Air India flight cancellation in quick succession. Hours earlier the airline confirmed its Ahmedabad-London Gatwick service had been scrapped and cited an unavailability of aircraft due to airspace restrictions and additional precautionary checks. This comes days after the horrific crash of Air India's AI 171 - a 787-8 Dreamliner flying the same sector as above, i.e., from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, that crashed seconds after take-off. Videos showed the Air India plane slamming into buildings bordering the airport, including a college hostel, and exploding into a terrifying fireball that killed 241 of the 242 people on board. Air India has retired the 171 call sign as a mark of respect for those killed. Post-Ahmedabad, Tech Snags Hit Dreamliners In the aftermath of the June 12 AI-171 crash three other India-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliners - operated by British Airways, Lufthansa, and Air India - were forced to return to origin airports. One of those was a Hong Kong-Delhi AI flight that returned 15 minutes after taking off; Air India said AI-315 turned around because of a "technical issue" but gave no further details. The other two were from Frankfurt (to Hyderabad) and London (to Chennai). And, early Tuesday an Air India San Francisco-Mumbai flight via Kolkata also suffered a technical snag. Passengers were deboarded during a halt at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport. The flight had a problem in the left engine, news agency PTI reported. Meanwhile, flight and voice data recorders from the crashed plane have been recovered and the information is being analysed, the government has said. Information from the Cockpit Voice Recorder and Flight Data Recorder should bring investigators closer to establishing why AI 171 crashed. The government has set up a high-level committee up to oversee the inquiry.

‘Lot of chaos': Air India flight 159 from Ahmedabad to London cancelled due to operational issues
Air India's flight to London, scheduled to depart from Ahmedabad on Tuesday afternoon, was cancelled due to "operational issues", officials said. Air India's official website confirms that the AI-159 flight from Ahmedabad to Gatwick airport in London has been cancelled. The plane was scheduled to depart at 3 pm from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. 'We have been informed that the flight has been cancelled due to operational issues. The original flight from Ahmedabad to London, having code AI-171, resumed operation from Monday with a new flight code AI-159,' said the airport official. An AI-159 flight passenger told ANI, 'I was going to Gatwick, London, by the 1 pm Air India flight, but I have just learned that the flight has been cancelled. The crew members could not give any reason for the flight cancellation or details on a fare refund.' A relative of an AI-159 passenger says, 'We have been told that today's flight has been cancelled and it will depart at 1100 hours tomorrow. All passengers here are troubled.' Another passenger said, 'We could have had more clarity in terms of when is our next flight and all that. But there was a lot of chaos…After a couple of hours, they said that they are not able to fix, so we are going to deplane. That is all that technical snags happen, it is part of flying. I have travelled international many times and I have seen this in multiple airlines. This is not an Air India thing, it's a technical snag. I had booked my ticket 2-3 weeks next flight is at 7 pm today…' The official did not elaborate on "operational issues" that caused the flight cancellation. Flight AI-171, which crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12, has been replaced with a new code, AI-159. All but one of the 242 passengers and crew members on board the flight AI-171 were killed in the crash.

Air India Ahmedabad-Gatwick flight postponed due to ‘airspace restrictions, added precautionary checks'
Operational delays due to 'multiple disruptions' in global aviation routes led an Air India Ahmedabad-Gatwick flight on Tuesday to being postponed. Officials of Air India confirmed to The Indian Express that the flight, which was scheduled to take off at 1.10 pm, will now depart on Wednesday. A spokesperson said that the move happened '… due to the unavailability of the aircraft, resulting from airspace restrictions and additional precautionary checks, leading to longer than usual turnaround of aircraft, and not due to any technical snag as claimed.' An official speaking on the condition of anonymity said, 'The Ahmedabad-Gatwick flight is preceded by Amsterdam to New Delhi and New Delhi to Ahmedabad in the sector. Since the incoming flight (AI-156) from Amsterdam to New Delhi was delayed by over two hours, the New Delhi-Ahmedabad flight could not take off in time on Tuesday and therefore the subsequent flight to Gatwick (AI-159) was cancelled as it would not be able to fly out in the designated time window that is permissible after a delay.' He said that multiple disruptions in several sectors had caused flight delays: 'There has been a baggage issue at one of the busiest airports in Europe, combined with delays on the Middle East sector due to airspace closure over Iran and Israel. Therefore, operations have been impacted causing delays on the international route. Once a flight is delayed beyond a certain period, some sectors are asked to reschedule the flights for the next day.' The official added that following the crash on June 12, the flight, which was originally scheduled to depart on Saturday, was 'cancelled' to allow the airline time to streamline its changed flight number from AI-171 to AI-159 and for other 'formalities' due to the crash. Later, Saturday's cancelled flight was cleared for flying and took off on Monday. 'The passengers have booked tickets several weeks in advance and the operations on the route will continue as per schedule even as we come to terms with the loss and tragedy that occurred on June 12… So, AI-159, as it is now numbered, will fly on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday every week as scheduled,' the official added. The Air India spokesperson said, 'We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers… We are providing hotel accommodation and also offering full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling if opted by the passengers.'
