Egypt launches ‘Sports Genome' phase of national DNA project

Zawya26-05-2025
Egypt has launched the latest phase of its National Genome Project, turning its focus to athletes as part of a broader effort to harness genetic science for health improvement and sports development, officials announced Sunday.
The announcement came during a high-level event marking the conclusion of the Sports Genome Project and the start of the 'Gene-Next' testing phase. Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said the initiative represents a leap forward in preventive healthcare and personalized athletic training.
'By decoding the genetic blueprint of Egyptians, we can not only enhance athletic performance but also improve public health and reduce the burden of disease,' Abdel Ghaffar said. He was joined by the ministers of youth and sports, higher education, and senior representatives from the presidency and armed forces.
The Sports Genome Program, he added, marks a strategic shift in how Egypt approaches health and human development—leveraging DNA analysis to tailor training, nutrition, and recovery programs based on an individual's unique physiological traits.
Youth and Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhy said the 'NEXT GENE' initiative opens a new chapter in Egypt's athletic development. 'It allows for the creation of personalized training plans aligned with each athlete's genetic potential, helping to prevent injuries and optimize performance from an early age,' he said.
Higher Education Minister Ayman Ashour described the project as the first of its kind in Africa and the Middle East, with government funding of EGP 2 billion. He called it a milestone in Egypt's transition to a knowledge-based economy and a cornerstone of the country's Vision 2030 strategy.
Presidential Health Advisor Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din emphasized the national genome project's broader scientific significance, especially in the fight against diseases such as cancer. 'We are conducting this work with precision in collaboration with Egypt's leading universities and research institutions,' he said.
Major General Mohamed El-Gohary, Director of the Armed Forces Center for Medical Research and Regenerative Medicine, reaffirmed the military's support for the project and its ongoing role in the implementation phase of the sports genome initiative.
The event was attended by former ministers, university leaders, senior military officials, and prominent sports divs, including the president of Egypt's Paralympic Committee and the former president of Zamalek SC.
The Sports Genome Project forms a core component of Egypt's broader National Genome Initiative, which aims to build a comprehensive genetic database to support early disease detection, personalized healthcare, and performance optimization. Officials say the initiative reflects a growing shift toward data-driven, individualized approaches in both medicine and elite sport.

Parliament demands better publicity for African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament

Parliament has raised concerns over the limited publicity as Uganda readies to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) which kicks off on Saturday, 02 August 2025. Legislators raised the concerns during debate on a statement by the Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang on Wednesday, 30 July 2025. Members of Parliament praised the infrastructural progress but voiced frustration over the delayed and underwhelming promotion of the tournament. Speaker Anita Among reminded the House that the successful hosting of CHAN would determine Uganda's readiness to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). 'How we host CHAN will determine how ready we will be to host AFCON,' she said commending the government for its investment in infrastructure. AUDIO Kayemba Hon. Geofrey Kayemba (Bukomansimbi South) questioned the timing and sufficiency of publicity efforts noting that only days remain before Uganda's first match. 'When was the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) given the Shs1 billion? This would have taken like three months back to do activations... the public needs to own it and to feel it,' he said adding that failure to invest in marketing was akin to hiding, 'a beautiful thing... deep down our beds'. Minister Ogwang clarified that although publicity is primarily a CAF responsibility, the government allocated Shs1 billion to FUFA to supplement these efforts given the short preparation window. 'This is a football event… we found it prudent that we use FUFA to help us as a government… to carry out this civic duty and popularise the event across the country,' he said adding that the campaign had begun in various towns with radio activations and advertisements. AUDIO Ogwang Hon. Asuman Basalirwa (Bugiri Municipality) warned that poor publicity could lead to empty stadiums. 'If we don't publicise these games, the stadium will be empty. And that will not be very good for the country,' he said. Hon. Susan Amero (Amuria District Woman Representative) used the occasion to call for balanced funding across all sports. 'We are treating football like it is the only game. I pray that in the subsequent budgeting, we should consider giving enough money to other sports,' she said. AUDIO Amero The Minister's statement highlighted that Uganda will host 12 matches at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole and that renovations at key training facilities including Kyambogo University, FUFA Kadiba, Mutesa II Stadium and Kampala International School Uganda (KISU) have met CAF standards. Speaker Among also sought clarity on unaccounted funds previously allocated for sports infrastructure. 'There is the money… meant for Mbarara-Kakyeka Stadium. We want an explanation on what happened to that money. I also know that we gave money to Masaka. We also want an explanation on what happened,' she said. Uganda is hosting Group C matches featuring Algeria, Guinea, Niger, South Africa and Uganda, as part of a joint East African PAMOJA bid with Kenya and Tanzania. Cairo, Egypt: Huawei Cloud Summit Northern Africa was successfully concluded, gathering over 600 government and business leaders, alongside key ecosystem partners from more than 10 countries. The Summit served as a pivotal platform to envision the digital future of the region and explore strategic opportunities in leapfrog development. Huawei Cloud has marked a year of significant growth since the official launch of its Egypt Region in 2024, which established Huawei Cloud as the first public cloud provider in Northern Africa. The past year has seen Huawei Cloud Northern Africa achieve a remarkable 140% growth, foster innovation with over 300 customers and 200 partners, and empower more than 15,000 developers to drive intelligent transformation across the region. Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population, stated during his speech at the opening of the summit that Egypt has placed great emphasis on investing in information technology, particularly in the establishment of large-scale data centers, with the aim of providing a secure environment for storing and analyzing vast volumes of information. He explained that the digital infrastructure developed in Egypt over the past years has significantly facilitated data storage and management, especially in sectors such as health and education. He pointed out that the healthcare sector is one of the key beneficiaries due to the volume of medical data, as cloud computing enables secure and efficient storage while linking hospitals and radiology centers. Dr. Amr Talaat, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Eng. Raafat Hindi, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Infrastructure Development and Digital Transformation, affirmed that in addition to Egypt's digital wealth, it possesses an even more significant asset in its human resources, represented by its youth, entrepreneurs, and innovators. He also highlighted the collaboration between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Huawei in implementing several ministry initiatives focused on training young people from various qualifications and age groups. Dr. Amr Talaat emphasized that this summit aligns with the state's efforts to build a digital Egypt and strengthen its position as a regional hub for innovation and digital transformation, while enhancing its technological infrastructure through partnerships with major global companies. He added that an ambitious strategy is being implemented to bolster Egypt's capabilities in cloud computing by developing a highly efficient computational infrastructure. Additionally, efforts are underway to provide an infrastructure that enables small and medium-sized enterprises and startups to leverage computational capabilities and artificial intelligence tools, relying on data centers located within Egypt.
