Prasidh Krishna emerges as Gujarat Titans' trump card in IPL 2025

Mint06-05-2025

There will be an extra buzz at the Wankhede on Tuesday (May 6) when Mumbai Indians (MI) take on Gujarat Titans (GT). Both teams are in a race to finish in the top two of the IPL 2025 points table, and the winner of this game will take a giant stride towards that, while the loser will see their chances diminished significantly.
The buzz around the game is about the return of Kagiso Rabada, but it is Prasidh Krishna who might be the most potent weapon for the Titans. In fact, the way Prasidh has been bowling in IPL 2025, he might even be the bowler to watch out for from both sides. That sounds like sacrilege in a game involving Jasprit Bumrah, but that's just how good Prasidh has been.
Prasidh had watched the last two years of the IPL from the sidelines, sitting out due to injury. It was not as if he was particularly missed because in the five years he had played, from 2018 to 2022, he had a middling record: an average of 34.76 and an economy of 8.92, with 49 wickets in 51 games.
Till then, in matches that Prasidh had been involved in, pace bowlers averaged 30.11 and conceded runs at 8.77 per game. This means that Prasidh was actually below par, overall. It looked like the same story might continue in IPL 2025, when Prasidh had 3-0-41-0 in his first game.
However, Prasidh had been working behind the scenes, and the results of that work would start showing up soon. Spectacularly.
It began with his second game of IPL 2025, against the very same Mumbai Indians. Prasidh bowled with pace, movement and supreme control to take 2/18 in four overs, and win the Player of the Match award.
Since that game, he hasn't gone wicketless in any subsequent match and is currently the Purple Cap holder in IPL 2025, with 19 wickets in 10 games. From taking less than a wicket per game to nearly two per match, it's been quite a remarkable turnaround.
'I was a metre or two shorter, slightly wider. So I really went back to the nets and worked on the very basics,' Prasidh had said after that first MI game. 'I'm playing T20s after a while and I needed that game, that over or a ball to get going.'
As the performances kept stacking up, Prasidh was asked if this was the best he had ever bowled in the IPL.
'Yes, I would say so,' he replied, before explaining what was working. 'My control over length has been good. All the work that we've been putting in as a team, and everybody around has been supportive enough for me to get to where I am now. I'm enjoying the way the ball is coming out of the hand.'
Control over length has been the key. In IPL 2025, Prasidh has been landing the ball on that hard length with unreal consistency. His pace, natural bounce allied to his height, and the movement he's always been able to get have ensured that batters have no respite against Prasidh. But he's also mastered variations. On pitches that grip, Prasidh is able to dial down his speed from the mid-140s to the low 130s and bowl cutters. When faced with an in-form KL Rahul, he's been able to summon the perfect yorker to get a key wicket.
'My preparation starts firstly by getting control over what I want to do,' Prasidh explained. 'Get into the nets and do exactly what I would do against somebody that I will be facing in a particular game, and from there, on game day, you look at what the pitch is like. If you're bowling second, make sure you watch every single ball of the 20 overs someone else bowls.'
Prasidh's resurgence started from the MI game. But MI themselves have also been resurgent, with six consecutive victories. However, that mighty batting line-up will be up against a bowler in red-hot form too. Since that match, Prasidh has been averaging 13.21 with an economy of 6.97, and has bowled his full quota of four overs in each of the nine games. And pace bowlers, overall, in those nine games averaged 29.84 while going at 9.48.
GT will look towards Prasidh, in his new role as the enforcer and the SOS man, to once again stop MI.

KSCA officials quit hours after HC shield from arrest

Karnataka State Cricket Association's (KSCA) secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam have resigned from their posts, owing moral responsibility for the tragic stampede at Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday, hours after the Karnataka High Court granted them protection from police arrests. In a letter to KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, they said they wished to own moral responsibility though their role was very limited. The stampede and congestion near the stadium led to the death of 11 cricket fans and injuries to scores of others. The resignations followed the state government launching a crackdown on the agencies involved in organising the felicitation events at the Chinnaswamy stadium after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title for the first time. On Thursday, chief minister Siddaramaiah ordered the arrest of senior executives of RCB, KSCA and event manager DNA Entertainment Network. Shankar and Jairam, along with Bhat, moved the High Court on Friday after the police charged the three organisations with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. In their petition, the KSCA office bearers said the association was only a governing body of cricket in Karnataka with affiliation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It has nothing to do with IPL events and Wednesday's celebrations were organized by RCB franchise and managed by its vendor DNA Entertainment Network, they argued. KSCA's role was limited to making the stadium and its infrastructure available to RCB and DNA. The police, the petitioners alleged, registered the FIR against them under intense pressure and compelling circumstances without any preliminary enquiry.

KSCA holds crisis meeting after Bengaluru stadium stampede

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 7 (ANI): The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) held a key meeting on Friday to decide the next course of action following the stampede incident outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The meeting was being chaired by KSCA President Raghuram Bhat. More details are awaited. Earlier in the day, top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations from their posts, taking 'moral responsibility' for the stampede that took place near M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. This was ahead of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team's felicitation after winning their Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tight final on Tuesday. As per ESPNCricinfo, the resignation has been submitted to the president of the board, Raghuram Bhat. Also in Bengaluru, CID officials paid a visit to KSCA office, with the state government having ordered a CID probe into the stampede case. Apart from this, a government letter surfaced revealing that the Karnataka government had granted written permission to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to hold an event at Vidhana Soudha to celebrate RCB's victory. The letter, dated June 4, was a swift response to KSCA's request, which the government approved by applying 19 conditions, as a huge crowd was expected in the Chinnaswamy stadium. Among the top concerns mentioned in the approval letter is the safety of the iconic Vidhana Soudha premises. 'Due to the large crowd that will gather during this event, precautions should be taken to ensure that no damage is done to the Grand Steps, statues, roads, or parks. You must be willing to cover the full repair or cost if any kind of disaster occurs,' mentions the letter. The other key conditions included, 'The program should be conducted without disrupting the traffic system. Action will be taken in this regard in coordination with the Police Department. The program should be conducted in a manner that does not interfere with office work. Keeping the event venue clean. Plastic bottles and items are strictly prohibited.' Apart from this, the event management company arranging the breakfast was asked to pay an advance security deposit of Rs 10,000, which was refundable, and a non-refundable Rs 10,000 fee. Meanwhile, a sessions Court in Bengaluru on Friday remanded four individuals, including senior Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) official Nikhil Sosale and three event managers, to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with the stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium here. They were arrested in a joint operation by the Cubbon Park Police and the Central Crime Branch (CCB) at Kempegowda International Airport in the early hours of June 6 (Friday). (ANI)

"Siraj is very, very capable": Bharat Arun on India fast bowler

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 7 (ANI): With India heading into what's set to be a high voltage five-match Test series in England, former bowling coach Bharat Arun has recalled some of those tactical things which could decide the fate of the Indian pacers in the swinging conditions in England. Discussing the evolution and impact of Mohammed Siraj with Revsportz, Arun took a deep dive into how conditions and angles could magnify or reduce the effectiveness of a bowler. Arun highlighted Siraj's 2021 performances, particularly how his natural angle worked well against left-handers. Arun said while speaking to Boria Majumdar on Revsportz, 'Especially when bowling to left-handers, he had an actual angle which was leaving them.' 'But he tried to cut out that angle by going round the wicket to them. And your effectiveness comes down, especially when there is a slight movement off the wicket,' he added. He pointed out a specific moment at Lord's where tactical adjustment made a significant difference. 'Especially at Lord's, where there is a slope. And if you're using it when you're bowling from the Pavilion End, and if you're going to be bowling round the wicket, you don't get the advantage of the slope,' he said. 'So, just at tea time, I remember asking him to go over the wicket and bowl. The line should be the leg of the left-hander. So, natural angle that leaves him, it will be leaving him on off stump,' he noted. Arun says that change paid off. He described Siraj as 'very, very capable' and implied that he might be one of the most important bowlers in the upcoming series due to his awareness of conditions and grasp of angles. The former India bowling coach also spoke highly of Arshdeep Singh's potential, especially in seam-friendly English conditions. 'I was particularly impressed with Arshdeep during the IPL. He could move the white ball both ways,' Arun said. He also emphasized the role of the Dukes ball in England, often considered a paradise for seamers. 'Probably the Dukes is the most bowler-friendly ball in world cricket. In terms of seam, in terms of the shine, the conditions in England are so conducive,' he remarked. Arun thinks that bowlers like Siraj and Arshdeep could have a significant impact in England Test series thanks to the Dukes ball, Lord's slope, and India's strong pace battery but only if they can comprehend and adjust to the finer details of English conditions. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
