With Lauren Betts out, No. 1 UCLA survives No. 22 Michigan State upset bid in thriller
Kiki Rice got a steal.
Janiah Barker scored a tough putback layup.
Rice hit free throws.
And then, Timea Gardiner hit the biggest three of the season for the Bruins with 44 seconds to go.
Top-ranked UCLA has proven to be one of the deepest teams in the nation, and they showed it again Sunday night, overcoming the absence of their leading scorer to defeat No. 22 Michigan State 75-69 in a March Madness-like thriller.
UCLA star center Lauren Betts did not play because of a foot injury. She wore an air cast during pregame warmups and is considered day-to-day, the team announced.
Making up for Betts' absence required a collective effort, and Janiah Barker did her part. One of her best plays came with just over a minute left before halftime when she stole the ball from Michigan State's Nyla Hampton and scored on an easy layup to put the Bruins ahead 41-28 with just over a minute before halftime.
Barker finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Gardiner also had 18 points for the Bruins to go along with four rebounds. Rice's 16 points and seven assists were also crucial.
But UCLA (24-1 overall, 12-1 Big Ten) missed Betts' defensive presence — the Spartans scored 22 points in the paint in the first half.
Michigan State (19-6, 9-5) was the more physical team early in the second half, forcing five UCLA turnovers in the first five minutes. Theryn Hallock and Julia Ayralt led the way for Michigan State as they erased UCLA's eight-point halftime lead. The Spartans took the first lead late in the third quarter off a Jocelyn Tate layup and held a 55-53 lead going into the fourth.
Michigan State extended its lead with two free throws on the first possession and led for most of the fourth until Gardiner's three-pointer with 44 seconds left put the Bruins ahead by two.
Rice extended the lead to four after hitting two free throws following a Michigan State team technical foul. Rice hit two more free throws with 13 seconds left to secure the UCLA woin.
As time expired, Barker grabbed a missed layup from Grace Van Slooten and waved to the raucous Pauley Pavilion crowd.
The Bruins will play host to Illinois on Thursday.

MSU basketball listed among top teams in Big Ten in latest preseason rankings

Texas TechCC: @FDSportsBook, @ Michigan State basketball remains just outside of the top 20 in the latest preseason rankings from one of the game's top analysts. Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports has released an updated batch of preseason rankings for the 2025-26 college basketball season, and the Spartans remain listed just outside the top 20. Rothstein has the Spartans at No. 21 in his updated version of the rankings that were released on Tuesday. Among Big Ten teams, the Spartans rank No. 5 in Rothstein's list but there is a notable drop off after the top three. He has Purdue (No. 1), Michigan (No. 5) and UCLA (No. 7) all in the top 10, and then next from the Big Ten is Oregon (No. 20) one spot before the Spartans. Michigan State is the reigning Big Ten champs and went the furthest of any team from the league in the NCAA Tournament by reaching the Elite Eight this past season. However, the Spartans have lost a number of key pieces off that highly-successful team, including leading scorers Jase Richardson and Jaden Akins -- so many like Rothstein anticipate a step back from the Spartans next season. As I've said during most of this offseason, I feel like anywhere from No. 15 to No. 25 is about right for the Spartans in next year's preseason poll. I would be quite surprised if they were any higher than No. 15 and shocked if they were unranked when the official preseason polls drop in a few months. Two Penn State linemen named to Lombardi Award watch list
Penn State looking for first Lombardi Award winner since 2015 College football's award watch list season continued to highlight some of Penn State's top players for the 2025 season this week. The Lombardi Award watch list was the latest award to include a paid of Penn State's top linemen on its watch list. One player on each side of the line of scrimmage received a mention on the Lombardi Award's watch list. Defensive lineman Zane Durant continued to add to his preseason accolades and honorable mentions by being named to the Lombardi Award's watch list. Joining him on the list from Penn State is offensive lineman Olaivavega Ioane. Both players also were named to the watch list for the Outland Trophy, which is awarded to the nation's top interior lineman. Durant was also named to the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. The Lombardi Award is also open to players on either side of the line of scrimmage and recognizes a player's leadership, courage, discipline and performance on the field. The award was first presented in 1970. Ohio State's Jim Stillwagon was the inaugural recipient of the Lombardi Award. Penn State's first Lombardi Award winner was Bruce Clark, in 1978. In 2015, Carl Nassib became the second and most recent Penn State player to bring home the award. Kelvin Banks Jr. of Texas was the Lombardi Award winner of the 2024 season. Aidan Hutchinson of Michigan was the most recent winner from the Big Ten, although Laiatu Latu of UCLA is the most recent winner from a school currently in the Big Ten (UCLA was in the Pac-12 when Laiatu won the award in 2023).
