Hawthorn captain James Sicily to miss multiple weeks in huge injury blow
Hawthorn captain James Sicily will miss the Hawks' next two season-defining matches after a flare-up of an abdominal/hip injury.
Sicily has been managing the pain in recent weeks, however further discomfort and subsequent scans on Monday revealed the concern had worsened.
He will sit out Thursday night's clash against the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium and the Round 14 trip to Launceston to face Adelaide.
7NEWS understands the Hawks were planning on resting the skipper for the date with the Crows ahead of the Round 15 bye in order to give him a full fortnight's rest.
However, that plan has been brought forward a week after he felt pain following the loss to Collingwood last Friday night. He recorded six disposals for the match — his lowest count in a full game since 2016.
Sicily confirmed to 7NEWS before Hawthorn's round 10 loss to Gold Coast in Darwin that he had been managing an ongoing groin issue but that he was never in doubt to miss what was a five-day break.
In the weeks following, coach Sam Mitchell had also been strongly defensive of his captain after a recent dip in form.
It's understood Sicily's strength markers had increased in recent weeks before his latest hiccup.
Sicily was reduced to an onlooker for Tuesday's physical main session at Waverley Park.
Mitchell is due to be the headline guest on Tuesday night's episode of The Agenda Setters on 7plus and 7Mate.

‘I just can't put on socks and shoes': Dermott Brereton's crippling legacy
'To be honest with you, Tim, Essendon and our [mid-'80s] battles took you to the edge of safety, and, for me, that is always where you get the best view of life,' Brereton said. The Hawks legend explained his use of anti-inflammatory medications thus: 'Some days I double up from rancid heartburn from the endless dosages of – remember [Indocin]... Timmy, that used to rip the guts out of you, Brufen, Voltaren, all taken for over 40 years,' Brereton said. 'Some nights I sleep very little because of the arthritis in my shoulder joints. That's from decades of lifting as heavy weights as I could, purely because the position I played required it. 'Some mornings, I pathetically allow myself to become melancholy and even teary over the degeneration and the physical toll that football has taken on my body.' Brereton said he had often questioned himself on whether, given the toll on his body, if his career had been worth the price. 'I often ask myself, in that moment of true misery, when I can't move, that moment of weakness, I'll ask myself – was it worth it? 'And the answer's always the same. I'd do it all over again, exactly the same again. Maybe next time, though in the next lifetime, I might go a little harder.' Brereton told of how he had regularly been treated with epidurals at the height of his playing career. '[In the years] '86-87, '88-89, those 22-game seasons, three times a year, on average, after a game on a Saturday, on a Sunday morning I'd go to Vimy House, I'd have an epidural at 8am and lie in bed until four, then the cab would come and pick me up and take me home. And I kept doing it.' Loading Brereton had said that football had given him so much – discipline, 'A lifetime of employment, it's given me a small dose of fame, occasionally given me romance. It's given me a small amount of wealth – that's gone, I know where it went, actually. 'It has given me great friendships. It's given me my life's greatest mentor – Allan [Jeans, his Hawthorn coach]. And it has given me a purpose. 'But it's also taken away something very dear to me.' Watson's speech drew constant laughter, as when the Bomber great recounted how he left Dimboola for Melbourne, aged 15, after Essendon officials assured his mother that he would be housed by a church-going, non-drinking, non-smoking family in Niddrie. 'We went about two miles, [chairman of selectors] Teddy Fordham went to the boot, got an Esky out, each of them had a can, [and] Teddy lit up a cigar. Then, I heard [official] Kevin Egan say to the other two, 'Where's the little prick going to stay?'' Brereton's revelations about his physical struggles are in line with La Trobe University research – cited by the AFL Players' Association – that 76 per cent of past players had experienced serious injuries in football while 64 per cent of those who reported serious injuries are still affected in daily life. Since 2017, more than 1150 past V/AFL and AFLW players have been reimbursed for costs from joint surgeries and dental injuries.

Wayne Carey caught in explosive late-night physical altercation
North Melbourne legend Wayne Carey has been filmed in a heated altercation with a man he described as an 'antagonist' outside a Melbourne pub. The 54-year-old was captured tussling with one man while another, who appears to be Carey's friend, tries to diffuse the situation, in a physical exchange that spilled out onto the streets surrounding Albert Park Hotel on Thursday night. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Wayne Carey caught in altercation. In the video, the champion AFL goalkicker and ex-commentator can be seen grabbing at the man's shirt before another man yells out, 'Wayne, Wayne, relax'. The struggle continues as the man attempting to keep peace then speaks to the third man directly, telling him to 'f*** off' and to 'shut the f*** up and go'. A female voice is then heard yelling from somewhere across the road, saying, 'Guys, walk away, people live here. Keep walking. Move it on'. It's the latest in a string of controversies littered throughout Carey's life since his playing days. In 2022, Carey was cleared of any wrongdoing after having a bag of white powder spill out of his pocket at Crown Casino in Perth. He insisted the bag contained crushed-up anti-inflammatory medication. His most infamous controversy was the extramarital affair he had with Kelli Stevens, the wife of former teammate Anthony Stevens, in 2002. Carey and Anthony Stevens have had a long-running feud in the 23 years since, but are set to be reunited at the Kangaroos' 100-year celebration later this year. Carey, Stevens and North great Glenn Archer will all be present for the Round 20 clash against the Western Bulldogs, which takes place in prime time on Thursday night. The trio will show a united front, nearly 25 years since Carey's messy exit from the club. It comes just six months after the club unveiled a video celebration of the centenary year that interestingly excluded Carey. Former teammate Corey McKernan was vocal at the time, but Carey and other North Melbourne greats, including Stevens and Archer will all be present for the special night. Channel 7's Caroline Wilson revealed the exclusive details of Carey's return on 7NEWS Melbourne and The Agenda Setters last month. 'All three men (Carey, Stevens, Archer) are well aware that they will be there together and united for the first time,' Wilson said 'There was speculation last year when North unveiled their centenary jumper. And if you remember, there were North champions from through the eras and there was no Wayne Carey, and Corey McKernan was very upset about this. 'In 2022, a year later, they had a 25-year premiership reunion for the '96 flag, and there was an altercation at a pub between Anthony Stevens and Wayne Carey. We know the history there. 'They had to be separated. I don't think it was physical, but it was not nice. 'And when there was a motorcade the next day at Marvel Stadium, Anthony Stevens wasn't there and Wayne Carey was. 'So the club has worked really hard to get all these guys within the fold. And clearly you can't celebrate your 100th anniversary without Wayne Carey being there.'
