Aaron Ramsey swaps Cardiff manager job for unexpected new playing role

Aaron Ramsey had been the bookmakers' favourite to become the next permanent Cardiff City manager, but instead he will continue his playing career a long way from Wales. The 34-year-old returned to Cardiff for a third stint in 2023, signing a two-year deal after a brief spell with French club Nice. The Bluebirds struggled in the Championship last season and after manager Omer Riza was dismissed in April, Ramsey was appointed interim manager for the final three games of the season. He could do nothing to stop Cardiff slipping into League One, finishing bottom of the Championship as they won just nine of their 46 league games. Despite this, Ramsey was being strongly linked with taking the job on a permanent basis, with the bookmakers considering him favourite for the role. There has been a surprising turn of events, though, as Ramsey will not only turn away from the chance to manage Cardiff, but he will extend his playing career in Mexico. PA report that the former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder has agreed to sign for Pumas, officially known as Club Universidad Nacional. Ramsey and Pumas manager Efrain Juarez share the same agent. The 86-cap Wales international made just eight Championship appearances for Cardiff last season and 10 in all competitions. Hamstring injuries hampered his campaign significantly after a knee problem had limited him to just 13 appearances in the previous campaign. Injuries have been an issue for the Welshman over his career, but will hope to stay fit and enjoy a surprise swansong in Mexico City. Ramsey will be the only British player in the Pumas squad and only the second European after Spaniard Ruben Duarte. Ramsey began his professional career with Cardiff when he became the club's youngest ever player by making his debut in 2007. He signed for Arsenal the following year and went on to make 369 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 64 goals and winning three FA Cups. More Trending The midfielder moved to Juventus on a free transfer in 2019, earning reported £400,000-a-week wages and he won Serie A in his first season with the Old Lady. Arsenal FA Cup: 2013-14, 2014-15, 2016-17 Juventus Serie A: 2019-20 Coppa Italia: 2020-21 Rangers Scottish Cup: 2021-22 However, he would only make 70 appearances for the Turin giants before leaving for Nice in 2022 after a loan spell with Rangers. His return to Cardiff in 2023 was his third spell with the Bluebirds as he also had a loan stint back in Wales during his Arsenal days. Ramsey's three games in interim charge returned two draws and a loss, with Cardiff finishing rock bottom of the Championship.

Arsenal told they must cough up £84m to sign attacking target

Juventus are determined to fend off Arsenal's interest in Kenan Yildiz, unless the Gunners are prepared to pay in excess of €100million (£84m) for the forward this summer. Yildiz further established himself as one of the most promising attacking talents in Italian football with a return of nine goals and eight assists in all competitions for Juve last season. But there has been mounting speculation that Yildiz could be on his way out of the Allianz Stadium, with the 20-year-old attracting the attentions of a host of top European teams. According to Italian outlet Tuttosport, Arsenal have shown the most concrete interest of those potential suitors and sent scouts to watch over Yildiz's performances several times in recent months. The report claims Yildiz finds himself at the top of Arsenal's wishlist, alongside Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams, with the club's new sporting director, Andrea Berta, keen to add greater firepower to Mikel Arteta's attack. Arsenal are also working on a deal for renowned talent spotter, Matteo Tognozzi, who helped facilitate Yildiz's move to Juve in 2022 – and it's thought his presence in north London could be key in capturing the Turkey international. However, Juve are said to be determined to shut down Arsenal's advances and would only entertain offers in excess of €100million (£84m) for their sought-after No.10. The Serie A giants 'do not want to be caught unprepared' and the club's general manager, Damien Comolli, plans to enter into contract talks with Yidiz's entourage in due course. Yildiz's current deal in Turin runs through to the summer of 2029. Speaking to DAZN last month, Yildiz said he and the rest of Juventus' squad were enjoying their time under new manager Igor Tudor. 'He gave us energy, it was important for us,' Yildiz said of the Croatian, who replaced Thiago Motta in the dugout back in March. 'Since he arrived, we've been happy, we've been working hard. 'I'm happy with this season, but I want to improve in everything. I'm always looking ahead. 'The No.10 shirt doesn't add any pressure. I play as usual and I'm happy to be wearing it.' Mikel Arteta has made no secret of his desire to bring in attacking reinforcements this summer and last month told fans to expect a 'big' transfer window. 'It's going to be a big one and we are very excited about it,' the Arsenal head coach told reporters. 'When you are going to go again, we want to increase the depth of the squad and the quality and the skills that we need to go to the next step. 'Every summer is big because it is an opportunity – and especially because of the number of players we have in the squad right now, that is necessary. 'But it's a big summer for many things because first of all we have to maintain the good foundations that we have and then obviously how can we improve and evolve the team.' Full confirmed list of summer Arsenal ins and outs with £5m transfer almost done

Arsenal are expected to have a very busy summer under Mikel Arteta as the Gunners boss attempts to cut the gap to Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table Arsenal are hard at work getting a number of signings over the line as the first deadline of the summer comes into view. All Premier League clubs have to abide by two different transfer windows this summer for the first time due to the Club World Cup. The first is set to close on Tuesday June 10. That gives the Gunners only a limited amount of time to get their first lot of business concluded. ‌ Luckily, a few deals already appear to be in the pipeline. Mikel Arteta 's side are close to signing Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga after deciding to activate a £5m release clause written into his deal at Stamford Bridge. ‌ Once his switch is formalised, he is expected to become back-up to compatriot David Raya at the Emirates Stadium. And Spaniard Kepa could very quickly be followed by another of his international teammates. Arsenal have been chasing Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi for some time and looked likely to sign him this summer. The North London side were previously the favourites to sign Zubimendi but are now facing late competition from Real Madrid. It appears likely that any deal for his signature now might have to wait for the summer's second transfer window that opens on June 16. That later window is set to run all the way up until Monday September 1. And Arsenal's business almost certainly won't end there either. Arteta's side are also interested in adding a much-needed forward to their squad ahead of next season, with a number of options having been identified. Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig are those who could be signed, with negotiations reportedly ongoing for both. Meanwhile, there's also new contracts on the agenda, with Gabriel having become the latest to commit his future to the club. ‌ Who else should Arsenal sign this summer? Share your thoughts in the comments below Of course, work remains ongoing for all of those deals but Arsenal have already confirmed a few transfers this summer, namely exits. Jorginho is the most high profile of those, having left at the end of his deal, along with Kieran Tierney. Nuno Tavares also helped boost the coffers, with the forgotten man joining Lazio permanetly after his loan. Mirror Football will keep you updated on the Gunners' moves as the summer progresses.
