WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Japanese warships docked in New Zealand 's capital Friday for the first time in almost 90 years amid efforts by Tokyo to deepen its strategic ties in the South Pacific Ocean.
Two destroyers with more than 500 crew on board sailed into Wellington harbor accompanied by the New Zealand navy ship HMNZS Canterbury. The JS Ise and destroyer JS Suzunami were on an Indo-Pacific deployment and arrived from Sydney, where Japan's military took part this month in war games involving New Zealand, Australia and other countries.
The Wellington visit was a ceremonial one, but it came as Japan, whose only treaty ally is the United States, has increasingly sought to deepen bilateral military cooperation amid ongoing regional tensions.
'Our defense force are developing cooperative work, not only with New Zealand and Australia but also many Pacific Island countries,' Japan's envoy to Wellington, Makoto Osawa, told reporters Friday. 'Our main goal is the free and open Indo-Pacific.'
The ambassador's remarks followed the announcement Tuesday by Australia's government that Japanese firm Mitsubishi Heavy Industries had won the bid for a contract to build Australian warships, beating out a German firm. While officials in Canberra said the Japanese proposal was the best and cheapest, they also hailed it as the biggest defense industry agreement between the countries.
New Zealand too has sought to shore up its strategic and military relations in Asia as part of a foreign policy reset in recent years that the government says has turned more attention on Pacific cooperation and security. Officials in Wellington announced in July that work had started on a defense logistics agreement with Japan, intended to make it easier for the countries' militaries to work together.
Japanese naval vessels do not often make visits so far south in the Pacific Ocean, but the rich and strategically important waters of New Zealand, Australia and smaller Pacific Island countries are increasingly contested by the world's major powers, making it the site of a fierce battle for influence between Beijing and Western nations.
Although remote, New Zealand has recently been drawn into more fraught questions of regional security. In February, live firing exercises by Chinese naval frigates in the Tasman Sea between New Zealand and Australia drew alarm from those countries' governments after flights were forced to divert at short notice.
The last port visit to Wellington by a Japanese naval vessel was in 1936, New Zealand's military said. A Japanese ship visited New Zealand's largest city, Auckland, in 2016.

Lockheed Secures a $720M Contract for JAGM & Hellfire Missiles

Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) recently secured a modification contract valued at $720.1 million to produce Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles (JAGM) and Hellfire missiles. The work related to this deal will be carried out in Ocala, FL, and is projected to be completed by Sept. 30, 2028. The award has been provided by the U.S. Army Contracting Command, Redstone Arsenal, AL. What's Favoring LMT Stock? With countries worldwide enhancing their defense capabilities, spending on advanced military arms and ammunition has been rapidly increasing. This also includes growing investments in missiles and missile systems, which are crucial for warfare missions. Lockheed, as a prominent manufacturer of missiles and missile defense systems, has thus been witnessing a steady flow of orders from the Pentagon and other U.S. allies. The latest contract win is an example of that. Notably, LMT Hellfire is a multipurpose missile capable of defeating a broad target set. On the other hand, JAGM is a next-generation missile that combines the capabilities of LMT's Hellfire and LONGBOW missiles into one system, providing multi-domain combat solutions. The aforementioned missiles' viability in the defense industry ushers in solid order flow for Lockheed, like the latest one, further reflecting the solid demand that they boast in the missile market. LMT Stock's Growth Prospects Rising military conflicts, terrorism and border disputes have led nations to increase their focus on national security, particularly on missile defense systems, backed by the rapid development of advanced missile technologies over the last decade. This is likely to have prompted Mordor Intelligence to forecast a compound annual growth rate of 5% for the missiles and missile defense systems market during the 2025-2030 time period. This should benefit Lockheed, with its Missile and Fire Control unit being a recognized developer of high-performance missiles. The unit pursues business in more than 50 countries worldwide. Some of its major programs are the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense air and missile defense programs as well. Its prominent missiles include the Precision Strike Missile and the Long Range AntiShip Missile. Prospects of LMT's Peers Other defense companies that are likely to enjoy the perks of the expanding missiles and missile system market have been discussed below. Northrop Grumman Corporation (NOC): Northrop Grumman provides high-speed, long-range strike weapons like the AARGM-ER, which is a supersonic, air-launched tactical missile system. It also develops and builds advanced missile defense technology, ranging from command systems to directed energy weapons, advanced munitions and powerful sensors. RTX Corporation (RTX): It is known for its missile defense systems like the Patriot and SM-6, which are in high demand globally. RTX also provides advanced sensors and interceptors to identify, track and defeat threats as part of a layered missile defense. The Boeing Company (BA): It manufactures various missile defense systems, including the Ground-based Midcourse Defense, Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense and Avenger. Boeing-built and supported air and missile defense systems have been protecting its customers for nearly 25 years against threats ranging from intercontinental ballistic missiles to hostile aircraft. Pomp and flattery – but no Ukraine ceasefire – as Trump-Putin talks end without a deal

The high-stakes summit between US President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin began with a warm greeting and a flyover by screaming jets at a military base in Alaska but ended with the US host conceding that they had failed to reach an agreement on how to end the fighting in Ukraine. Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on Friday made no breakthrough on Ukraine at their much-anticipated summit, pointing to areas of agreement and rekindling a friendship but offering no news on a ceasefire. Trump, fond of calling himself a master deal-maker, rolled out the red carpet for Putin at an Alaska air base in the first time the Russian leader was allowed on Western soil since he ordered the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. After an abrupt ending to nearly three hours of talks with aides, Trump and Putin exchanged warm words and flatteries during a brief press conference – but took no questions from reporters. "We're not there yet, but we've made progress. There's no deal until there's a deal," Trump said. He called the meeting "extremely productive" with "many points" agreed, although he did not offer specifics. "There are just a very few that are left, some are not that significant, one is probably the most significant," Trump said without elaborating. Putin also spoke in general terms of cooperation in a joint press appearance that lasted just 12 minutes. "We hope that the understanding we have reached will... pave the way for peace in Ukraine," Putin said. As Trump mused about a second meeting, Putin smiled and said in English: "Next time in Moscow." Flattering Trump The former KGB agent quickly tried to flatter Trump, who has voiced admiration for the Russian leader in the past. Putin told Trump he agreed with him that the Ukraine war, which Putin ordered, would not have happened if Trump were president instead of Joe Biden. Trump for his part again complained of a "hoax" that Russia intervened to help him the 2016 election – a finding backed by US intelligence. The friendly reception was a stark contrast to Trump's berating of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky when he met him at the White House in February. Trump earlier said he sought a three-way meeting with Zelensky but did not announce one at the summit. Trump said he would now consult Zelensky as well as NATO leaders, who have voiced unease about the US leader's outreach to Putin. "Now it's really up to President Zelensky to get it done," Trump said in a Fox News interview after the summit. Putin warned Ukraine and European countries to "not create any obstacles" and not "make attempts to disrupt this emerging progress through provocation or behind-the-scenes intrigues." Trump invited Putin just a week ago and ensured there was some carefully choreographed drama for their first in-person meeting since 2019. The two leaders arrived in their respective presidential jets and descended on the tarmac of an air base, with Trump clapping as Putin appeared. The Russian leader grinned widely as Trump took the unusual step of escorting him into "The Beast," the secure US presidential limousine, a landmark for a leader who is facing an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court over the Ukraine war, which has killed tens of thousands of people. Battlefield gains Russia in recent days has made battlefield gains that could strengthen Putin's hand in any ceasefire negotiations, although Ukraine announced as Putin was flying in that it had retaken several villages. Trump had insisted he would be firm with Putin, after coming under heated criticism for appearing cowed during a 2018 summit in Helsinki. While he was traveling to Alaska, the White House announced that Trump had scrapped a plan to see Putin alone and he instead held the talks alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his roving envoy Steve Witkoff. Zelensky was not included and has refused pressure from Trump to surrender territory seized by Russia. "It is time to end the war, and the necessary steps must be taken by Russia. We are counting on America," Zelensky said in a social media post. The Alaska meeting comes as the war has caused heavy losses on both sides and drained resources. Read moreThe Ukrainian land occupied by Russia at the heart of the Trump-Putin summit Ukraine has held on far longer than some initially expected since the February 2022 invasion, but it is straining to hold off Russia's much larger army, grappling with bombardments of its cities and fighting for every inch on the over 600-mile (1,000-kilometer) front line. When asked about his advice to Zelensky, Trump told Fox News after the Putin talks: "Gotta make a deal. Yeah. Look, Russia is a very big power, and they're not. They're great soldiers."
