Total insanity as Mitchell Starc annihilates West Indies

News.com.au14-07-2025
Mitchell Starc has done things cricket has never seen before in a morning of cricket insanity in the West Indies.
The Aussie bowler was spitting fire on Tuesday morning as he took three wickets in his first over as the home side fell apart in Jamaica.
With Starc taking five wickets for two runs in his third over, the West Indies were left a shell of their former selves.
With Starc breaking records with five wickets in 15 deliveries, the iconic record of the lowest score in Test cricket history (26 runs) is under threat.
The home side have capitulated to be 6/12 after seven overs.
The West Indies are well on their way to the lowest score in the Caribbean cricket federation's history — 43 runs, set in 2003.
Starc's spell saw him reach 400 wickets in his 100th Test.
The crcket world was completely gogsmacked by the scenes.
Cricket commentator Neal Gardner posted on Z: 'To do what Starc just did in his 100th test, it does not get any more iconic. I'm in awe'
One person posted: 'There's Mitchell Starc and then there's everyone else. Even Bumrah fades when Starc is in full flight'.
Another cricket fan wrote: 'Starc will end his career as one of the greatest cricketer ever'.
Aussie Test great Brad Haddin said it commentary on ESPN it had been a 'ridiculous' spell of bowling.
The home side earlier suggested a fightbck was on the cards as they wrapped up the Aussie tail end quickly, setting a total of 204.
Australia on Monday extended their first-innings lead of 82 but were kept in check by the West Indies bowlers as the pink ball proved almost unplayable under floodlights in the final session for the second day in a row.
Alzarri Joseph snared three wickets and Shamar Joseph two to keep their team in the game after their batters earlier collapsed to 143 all out in an eventful middle session.
Shamar Joseph took his series haul to 20 victims with only Australia's Cameron Green preventing a complete capitulation by compiling an unbeaten 42.
Earlier, a day after the visitors lost their last seven wickets for 68 runs to be dismissed for 225, the Caribbean side were marginally worse.
The hosts lost their last seven wickets for 61 from 82-3 as Australia's array of seamers ran riot.
Scott Boland, selected as a fourth seamer at the expense of veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon, led the demolition with 3-34.
Josh Hazlewood and Cummins claimed two wickets each in a performance that could have been even better had wicketkeeper Alex Carey not spilled two chances.
Such was the discomfort of the home batsmen that they were incapable of making the most of those lapses.
Poor shot selection contributed as did the needless runout of Justin Greaves who departed to Konstas's throw from the cover boundary after turning for a third run.
Boland triggered the second session slide when he had John Campbell leg-before offering no shot for 36, which was the highest score of the innings.
He also bowled Shai Hope (23) and then rounded off the innings with the wicket of Shamar Joseph (8).
At the start of the day the West Indies found free scoring almost impossible on a seamer-friendly surface against an attack offering very few opportunities.
Just 57 runs came off 23 overs for the loss of two wickets in the first session. Hazlewood and Cummins were the successful bowlers on a humid afternoon, accounting for the overnight pair of Brandon King (14) and Roston Chase (18).
King was trapped leg before by a full delivery from Hazlewood while Cummins removed his West Indian counterpart via an edge to Khawaja at first slip from ball which lifted sharply off a good length.

Boxing: Nikita Tszyu wins comeback fight against Lulzim Ismaili, undefeated, live updates, full card

Nikita Tszyu has wasted little time celebrating his return to the ring, ending his comeback fight against Lulzim Ismaili after just one round. The son of Kostya and younger brother of Tim, the promising Nikita Tszyu had a 10-0 record entering Wednesday night in his three-year professional boxing career. He took on previously undefeated Macedonian Ismaili (12-1) in a super welterweight bout at Sydney's ICC Exhibition Centre as the Aussie tested out his surgically repaired left hand for the first time in 12 months. The 27-year-old showed few issues, however, as he dropped Ismaili with a huge left hand just over a minute into the first round. Ismaili seemed to want nothing to do with Tszyu's power, surviving the first round but then refusing to get off his stool to start the second. Picture: Thomas Lisson The Tszyu family is among the most revered in Aussie boxing history, although Tim Tszyu and his camp have received some flak after he lost his world title and has fallen short in three of his past four fights. Nikita had a message for the haters shortly after his victory. 'Thank you to my team for always being there number one,' he said. 'They've copped a lot of criticism with my brother's recent fights, but we're here til the end. 'This is my family.' (Photo by Tayfun Coskun/Anadolu via Getty Images) Tszyu, who goes by the ring name 'The Butcher', demonstrated in the build-up to his first fight since August last year he is a unique character, even among boxers. Tszyu raised plenty of eyebrows when he revealed his wife's placenta in capsule form and breast milk were part of his pre-fight diet. Whatever his approach, it appears to be having the desired effect as he took another step forward in his young career. Michael Zerafa also looked strong as he dominated his fight against American Mikey Dahlman, setting up a potential showdown with Nikita Tszyu in the future. Brock Jarvis also overcame a slow start to also get back on the winner's list following his brutal defeat to Keith Thurman earlier this year. Check out how the big night of boxing unfolded below. Sam Kerr opens up on ‘lonely' recovery from devastating injury

Matildas superstar Sam Kerr has opened up on her 'lonely' rehabilitation as she prepares to make her long-awaited return to the field. Kerr hasn't played a single minute of football since suffering an ACL injury in January 2024. Matildas coach Joe Montemurro recently revealed the 31-year-old suffered further damage during her rehab that required a second bout of surgery. Kerr is back in full training as she closes in on a return to competitive action. The new Super League season begins in early September and it remains to be seen if Kerr will feature in the early games. During her lengthy break from football, Kerr and partner Kristie Mewis became parents to son Jagger in May. She was also found not guilty of racially aggravated assault of a police officer in a highly publicised case. In a rare interview, Kerr said it's nice to be back with teammates after a tough rehab. 'During an injury, you're alone a lot,' Kerr told Chelsea's media team from their training camp in the Netherlands. 'So it's good to be back with the girls, just doing the same training sessions as them rather than solitary rehab sessions. Being in camp like this helps you get to know all the new faces. 'It's nice to be back with the girls, back on the pitch, and yeah, I'm excited. I'm most looking forward to being out there, scoring goals and having fun. Getting back to normal and being with the team is great, too. 'It's nice to get away with the girls and spend more time together. For me, I've loved getting some nice weather. I know it's been nice in London, but I just love the sun, so I want to train in the sun and the heat, and to spend time with the new staff and the new players.' Despite her injury-enforced layoff, Kerr has lefty goals for when she returns to the field. The superstar striker is a two-time golden boot winner, having scored 21 and 20 in back-to-back campaigns in the early 2020s. 'My contribution is goals; it's as simple as that,' she said. 'For the last, however many years, I've been within the top goalscorers, if not the top goalscorer in the team, and that's where I want to come back to, I've got high expectations of myself. 'I have a lot of confidence in my ability, so the contribution for me is straightforward. It's goals. That's what I'm here to do, and that's what I normally do, so there's no reason why I can't do it again.' Kerr will also have a familiar face at Chelsea with Matildas teammate Ellie Carpenter joining the team in the off-season. 'It's good to have a familiar face,' she said of her new teammats. 'I've felt at home at Chelsea regardless of whether there was another Aussie here or not, but it's nice to have someone to chat to about things from home that maybe the other girls would have no idea about. She's a great player and a great athlete. 'Chelsea's about winning, so I think everything we do here is about winning - from the standards at the training ground to what we do on the pitch. When you come to a club like Chelsea, sometimes that can be a culture shock. 'With new players, it's just about guiding them, but honestly, when I came here, I enjoyed it straight away because people just made me feel welcome and comfortable. With my personality and who I am as a leader, my role is to make the girls feel the same way and make sure they're enjoying themselves. 'People can perform at their very best when they're happy, comfortable and feel a part of the team.'

‘Score goals': Kerr's vow as comeback nears

Sam Kerr has vowed to return to the top of the goalscoring lists in England as the Matildas captain prepares for a playing comeback more than 18 months in the making. The superstar striker is set to start the new Women's Super League season with Chelsea next month having recovered from the ACL injury she suffered during a training camp in January 2024. She's just one goal short of reaching 100 for her club, having scored 99 before being cut down with injury. It's been a protracted rehab that has kept her away from national duties, but her comeback looms as crucial for the Asian Cup chances of the Matildas when the tournament is played in Australia next March. Speaking with Chelsea media at a training camp in the Netherlands, Kerr expressed her strong desire to do what she has always done when she gets back on the pitch. 'My contribution is goals; it's as simple as that,' she said. 'For the last however many years, I've been within the top goalscorers, if not the top goalscorer in the team, and that's where I want to come back to. I've got high expectations of myself. That's what I'm here to do, and that's what I normally do, so there's no reason why I can't do it again.' In what was her first interview since returning to training, Kerr said she had been 'alone a lot' during her recovery, having also become a mother during her lay-off. 'During an injury, you're alone a lot,' Kerr said. 'So it's good to be back with the girls, just doing the same training sessions as them rather than solitary rehab sessions. I'm most looking forward to being out there, scoring goals and having fun. Getting back to normal and being with the team is great, too.' Kerr will have a familiar face on her team when she returns to action after Chelsea signed her Matildas teammate Ellie Carpenter, whom she has helped settle into the club and life in London.
