Heavy Rains Damage Ganpati Idol Workshops in Thane's Majiwada, Artisans Face Losses in Lakhs

Thane: As incessant rainfall continued to batter Thane district, traditional Ganpati idol makers in Majiwada bore the brunt of waterlogging and poor drainage, with several workshops reporting significant damage to clay idols and substantial financial losses. Sachin Narvekar, an artisan whose family has been in the idol-making business for nearly 80-90 years, said his workshop near Lodha Garden suffered severe damage. "Every year the drainage gets choked. When the nallah (drain) gets blocked, water doesn't flow out and instead flows back into our workshops," Narvekar explained. The flooding damaged 60-70 idols in his unit, with clay idols being the worst affected. "The clay idols (maticha murtya) got completely damaged. We've suffered losses of around ₹2-3 lakh across three workshops," he said. The traditional clay idols, which require careful handling and proper storage conditions, proved particularly vulnerable to the waterlogging. "Some idols were kept above ground level, but even those got soaked," he said, adding that the annual problem of poor nallah cleaning has persisted this year as well. "Nallah cleaning wasn't done," he complained. Milind More, whose grandfather started the business 51 years ago, described how water entered their premises despite being built three feet above road level. "Our house was constructed three feet above ground in 1974 and it has gone down three feet due to road construction, but water still entered because of poor drainage and overflowing gutters in the area," More said. While his family managed to save most idols, 2-4 pieces were damaged by the flooding. Former corporator Lawrence D'Souza alleged that builders had narrowed down the nallah ahead, exacerbating the drainage problem. "TMC is responsible for this situation," D'Souza said, pointing to inadequate maintenance and encroachment issues. The artisans expressed frustration over the lack of administrative support and urged authorities to address the recurring drainage problems. "No one from TMC (Thane Municipal Corporation) or any other administration came to help us," one artisan said. With no insurance coverage for their products and the festival season approaching, the idol makers are now scrambling to fulfil customer orders while dealing with the financial setback. LDA's new park to mimic forest oasis near Paper Mill Colony

Lucknow: The Lucknow Development Authority will develop a sprawling 25-acre park in Bhikhampur near Paper Mill Colony, with a unique forest-themed design. With a whopping 50,000 saplings, the park will be home to a vibrant mix of flowering, fruit-bearing, and shade-giving plants, creating a lush oasis for visitors. This will be the state's first park of its kind, created with minimal construction and designed to resemble a natural forest. While the park has not yet been named, the LDA has already prepared a work plan. There will be no permanent structures or ornamental constructions. Trees and plants of the same theme and colour will be planted at four-metre intervals. Pathways inside the park will be unpaved. To ensure the safety of plants, wire fencing and security personnel will be deployed. The land on which the park will be developed was acquired by the LDA after clearing and demolishing illegal constructions on the land last year. The project was initially handed to the municipal corporation, but has now come back to the LDA. Visitors will also be able to enjoy the nearby Saumitra Van and Shakti Van located right opposite. The forest department will provide saplings. The park will feature species such as peepal, neem, banyan, pakar, pilkhan, shisham, mahua, amaltas, kachnar, gulmohar, guava, mango, jamun, and arjun, to be supplied by the forest department. A section of the park will have a Miyawaki forest, developed with the Japanese plantation technique. Along the Kukrail river stretch, species such as jamun, arjun, paniya, and cane will be planted. According to LDA officials, the park will be developed like a natural forest with several ornamental, medicinal, and fruit-bearing plants. Big cat travelled 150km across 3 districts in 4 days: DFO

1 2 3 4 Bhubaneswar: A tiger, whose pugmarks were first spotted in Sundargarh on Aug 15, has travelled 150km in four days and reached Kholbilung section under Bamra forest range in Sambalpur, said Bamra DFO, Bikram Dev Pattanaik, on Tuesday. The movement of the big cat has caused panic among villagers in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur districts, officials said. Pattanaik said, "From the pugmarks, it is confirmed it is a Royal Bengal Tiger, and we suspect it is an adult male. We believe the tiger entered Sundargarh from Chhattisgarh. The tiger is moving very fast, and we are monitoring its movements round the clock. Four camera traps have been installed in strategic locations in the forest. So far, the big cat has not been captured on camera." The divisional forest officer (DFO), said that on Tuesday pugmarks were spotted near a pond in Kholbilung village. "We believe it will travel to the adjacent Bonai forest division in Sundargarh. The Bonai DFO has been informed about the possible route of the tiger," he added. Officials said the tiger is aged over 7 years and it had injured a cow in Sundargarh. Forest officials are sensitising people in villages under Bamra division to stay indoors and not venture outside at night. Forest officials have set up camps in Niktimal and Kholbilung sections and 30 personnel are engaged in tracking the big cat.
