‘We warned them': Congress slams Gujarat govt over Vadodara bridge collapse; says it was a disaster waiting to happen
NEW DELHI: The Gujarat Congress came down heavily on the state government holding it responsible for the bridge collapse incident in Vadodara that claimed nine lives on Wednesday.
Party leader Amit Chavda said that the incident occurred due to state government's negligence.
"The Gambhira bridge that connects Anand and Vadodara districts collapsed this morning. The traffic from the entire Saurashtra passes through here. We had demanded from the government again and again, and people had written to them a that the bridge was not in good condition and it should be repaired. But the government paid no heed.
That is why the incident occurred," Chavda told ANI.
He claimed that the crumbling bridge and ignored warnings were a perfect recipe for disaster.
The bridge, which connects Padra and Mujpur and serves as a key connector between Central Gujarat and Saurashtra, gave way around 7.30am, sending a truck, a van, and a car into the Mahisagar river below.
Locals were the first to respond, followed by police, fire brigade, and disaster response teams.

Vadodara (Rural) SP Rohan Anand confirmed the deaths, while Anand MP Mitesh Patel said three bodies had been recovered and four persons rescued. Rescue operations were still underway till late evening, with ten people pulled out from the river.
The bridge, located about 25km from Vadodara city, handles heavy vehicular movement, particularly from Saurashtra-bound transport vehicles.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a foreign visit, announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the PMNRF for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured. He also spoke to CM Bhupendra Patel to take stock of the situation and reviewed the state's rescue and relief efforts.
CM Patel later posted on X that the Prime Minister had expressed condolences and enquired about treatment arrangements for the injured.

All eligible women in Kotia to get Subhadra money: Parida
Koraput: State govt has decided to cover all eligible women of Kotia panchayat in Koraput's Pottangi block under , irrespective of whether their Aadhaar cards are issued by Odisha or neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, deputy chief minister Pravati Parida announced on Friday. Earlier, at least 246 women of Kotia panchayat were excluded from the Subhadra scheme as they possessed Aadhaar cards from Andhra Pradesh. "The govt has now decided to include all eligible beneficiaries, regardless of the state mentioned in their Aadhaar," Parida added. She said the 246 women will receive all three instalments under the scheme, a total of Rs 15,000, during a programme in Jeypore on Saturday, which will be attended by CM Mohan Charan Majhi. Parida further announced that Kotia's 26 existing anganwadi centres will be strengthened, with more to be set up, if required. Plans are also underway to open a Lakhpati Didi training centre to provide skill-based training to women. A mini secretariat will be constructed in Kotia to house multiple govt offices for more effective execution and monitoring of development projects. "Our aim is for holistic development of Kotia and nothing can deter us from it," Parida added. The two states have been involved in a legal tussle over the ownership of 21 out of 28 villages in Kotia panchayat. Since 1968, the matter is sub judice in the Supreme Court.

Belagavi: ASHA workers will hold a day-and-night protest across the state, including at the Belagavi district headquarters, from Aug 12 to 14, demanding the fulfilment of various demands, including a guaranteed honorarium of at least Rs 10,000. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking to the media at the Kannada Sahitya Bhavan in Belagavi on Friday, D Nagalaxmi, state secretary of the Karnataka State United ASHA Workers' Association, said a three-day protest will be held on the premises of the deputy commissioner's office. The govt has not fulfilled the demands of ASHA workers as promised. Around 42,000 ASHA workers in the state protested for four consecutive days at Freedom Park in Bengaluru in Jan. The chief minister, health minister, and higher officials promised to guarantee an honorarium of at least Rs 10,000 to ASHA workers, but the govt did not keep its promise. Instead, they acted in a disloyal manner by dismissing the ASHA workers themselves, she outraged. As announced by the chief minister, a monthly honorarium of Rs 10,000 should be guaranteed to ASHA workers. The incentive allowance for all ASHA workers should be increased by Rs 1,000 on the model of anganwadi and midday meal workers. The plan to dismiss ASHA workers should be abandoned, she demanded. Apart from these demands, ASHA facilitators should be continued with appropriate salaries. Retired ASHA workers should be given a pension on the lines of West Bengal. It is their demand that the ASHA incentive fund increased by the central govt should be implemented in the state as well, she said. All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC) leaders Laxman Jadagannavar, Karnataka State United ASHA Workers' Association leaders Geeta Rayagol, Roopa Angadi, Rita Fernandes, Jayashree Navi, Lata Jadhav, Sujata Kadamath, Megha Koujalagi, Sumitra Hiremath, Tabassum, and Sunanda Koli were present.
