"Mortgaged election symbol to DMK in exchange for RS seat": BJP's H Raja takes dig at Kamal Haasan

India Gazette7 hours ago

Pudukkottai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 7 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader H. Raja criticised Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) President chief Kamal Haasan, saying that the actor-turned-politician has 'mortgaged' his party in exchange for a Rajya Sabha seat.
The BJP leader stated that the MNM chief, who used to oppose the DMK's freebies and corrupt rule, has 'mortgaged' his torchlight election symbol to the DMK in exchange for a Rajya Sabha seat. He even claimed that the actor has said to never form an alliance with the DMK.
'Everyone knows what Kamal Haasan did in the past. He opposed the DMK's freebies and corrupt rule. He even said he would never form an alliance with the DMK. Now, out of embarrassment, he has mortgaged his torchlight election symbol to the DMK in exchange for a Rajya Sabha seat. It is a waste of time to talk about him,' Raja said on Friday.
This came after Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) President and Actor Kamal Haasan filed his nomination for Rajya Sabha at the Tamil Nadu secretariat after DMK allocated one upper house seat to MNM.
Haasan filed his nomination in the presence of DMK President and state Chief Minister MK Stalin and his Deputy Udhayanidhi Stalin on Friday.
In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, each candidate requires a minimum of 34 votes to clinch a Rajya Sabha seat. The DMK-led INDIA bloc, with 158 MLAs (DMK: 133, Congress: 17, VCK: 4, CPI: 2, CPM: 2), is poised to win four seats comfortably.
The ruling DMK has named its three candidates for the Rajya Sabha election scheduled for June 19 this year. According to a release of the DMK, Salma, Advocate P Wilson, and SR Sivalingam are its candidates.
Actor Kamal Haasan launched Makkal Needhi Miam at a public meeting in Madurai in 2018. Makkal Needhi Miam did not contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, and instead it campaigned for the DMK-led INDIA bloc in the State. In return, the DMK had promised a Rajya Sabha seat for the party. Makkal Needhi Miam had secured 2.62 per cent of the votes in the 2021 State Assembly election.
Earlier on Thursday, Kamal Hassan's latest film Thug Life was released. Fans flooded the venue, waving banners and cheering for their beloved actor, creating an electrifying atmosphere at the premises of the cinema halls.
The buzz was unmistakable, with several fans even breaking into spontaneous dances to celebrate the much-awaited release of the film.
At the centre of the buzz, Haasan expressed his gratitude and excitement for the project, particularly his collaboration with the acclaimed director Mani Ratnam.
'It is true that working with him (Mani Ratnam) was a pleasure for me. I would like to thank Tamil Nadu and its people for their unwavering support,' Haasan said, reflecting on the warmth he has received throughout his career.
In 'Thug Life', Haasan leads an ensemble cast that includes Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Ali Fazal, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf, among others.

Trump says relationship with Musk is ‘over,' warns against funding democrats

US President Donald Trump on Saturday admitted that his relationship with Elon Musk, once a key ally and donor, is likely over. 'I would assume so, yeah,' he said in a telephonic interview with NBC News. Trump also warned of 'serious consequences' if the tech mogul provides financial support to Democratic candidates challenging Republicans who back the administration's sweeping tax-cut and spending bill. 'If he does, he'll have to pay the consequences,' Trump added, though he declined to specify what those consequences might rift between the two prominent figures erupted publicly earlier this week, with Musk criticizing the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a 'disgusting abomination' and warning that Trump's tariff policies could trigger a even posted, then deleted, a post on X supporting Trump's impeachment, as well as a reference to Trump's past ties to Jeffrey Epstein, an allegation Trump dismissed as 'old news.' Stalin raking up delimitation issue to cover up his failures, says Union minister L Murugan

Coimbatore: Union minister of state L Murugan on Saturday said chief minister M K Stalin was raising the issue of delimitation of parliamentary constituencies to cover up the failures of his regime. He urged Stalin to focus on running the govt properly, instead of misleading the people. Addressing the media at the city airport, Murugan said the DMK govt had increased the electricity tariff and property tax and was involved in the Tasmac scam. "Is the chief minister running the govt or are his young brothers running the show? The CM has made it a habit to blame the Union govt to cover up his govt's failures. A caste-wise census has already been conducted in Bihar and Telangana. Stalin has no intention of conducting such a census in Tamil Nadu. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that a caste-wise census will be conducted across the country, and he is a true leader of social justice," Murugan said. He said the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies was never discussed in parliament. The Prime Minister clearly stated that the constituencies would be restructured without harming anyone or any state, he said.

20% ethanol blending achieved after policy changes in 2014, says Fadnavis

1 2 Pune: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday lauded the efforts of Pune-based Praj Industries for its contribution to biofuel generation and said the sector suffered due to the lack of a policy during the UPA-led govt's tenure. It was only after NDA formed govt in 2014 that did India start achieving 20% ethanol blending with petrol that could help save crores of rupees in foreign exchange, he said. "The period from 2009 to 2014 was a struggle not only for Praj Industries but for the entire country. Before that, during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's govt, he formed a committee to study ethanol blending and a decision was made for 5% blending with petrol. However, the subsequent govt failed to implement the decision effectively," he said in Pune. The CM further said whenever the demand to increase the ethanol blending percentage was raised (during the UPA tenure), some people would claim that a developing country like India could not afford it by compromising food security. "The scenario changed after 2014 when the NDA govt, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, brought changes in the policy to increase the percentage. The country has achieved 20% ethanol blending due to which India is saving crores of rupees in foreign exchange, which we would have to spend on importing fuel," Fadnavis said at an event organised to release a book written by the founder president of Praj Industries, Pramod Chaudhari.
