Packers to live stream 'Family Night' event on team's website

USA Today5 days ago
For the second consecutive year, the Green Bay Packers will live stream the team's Family Night event inside Lambeau Field on the team's website (packers.com) and mobile app.
The Packers began live streaming the practice last year.
In the recent past, the Packers have only made the event available through the limited-area television broadcast, mostly in fear of compromising a competitive advantage with a full broadcast of a training camp practice. Now, Packers fans from across the country will get an opportunity to see Family Night without needing to find an alternate online stream. The team must realize the impossibility of limiting the reach of a practice open to over 80,000 in-person fans and televised locally.
In addition to the live stream, the Packers will broadcast the practice to limited-area television audience on the Packers TV Network:
The broadcast is expected to begin at 7:00 p.m when players come on the field for warmups. Practice is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. While the event is no longer a true scrimmage, the Packers are planning for a full practice. Saturday night will serve as the ninth full and open practice of training camp in 2025.
As of Thursday night, a limited number of tickets to Family Night are still available.

Packers cornerback Nate Hobbs remains out of practice after undergoing knee procedure

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers cornerback Nate Hobbs has undergone a surgical procedure on his knee that will keep him out of training camp for now. Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Tuesday he didn't want to speculate on when Hobbs might return. Green Bay Packers on SI first reported Hobbs' injury and said he could return in about three weeks. 'I'm not going to put a timetable on it, but unfortunately he had to have something cleaned up,' LaFleur said. 'We're hoping to get him back here sooner than later.' Hobbs didn't practice on Friday or Saturday. LaFleur said he believed the injury occurred during a collision in training camp. The Packers signed Hobbs to a four-year, $48 million contract in March after he spent his first four seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders. The 26-year-old Hobbs started 38 games, forced three fumbles and intercepted three passes during his time in Las Vegas. Hobbs is expected to help the Packers absorb the loss of two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander, who got released in June and has since signed with the Baltimore Ravens. The Packers entered training camp with Keisean Nixon, Hobbs and Carrington Valentine as their top three cornerbacks. The Packers have attempted to boost their cornerback depth by having wide receiver Bo Melton work primarily on defense in training camp. They also added a familiar face Monday by signing Corey Ballentine, three days after the Indianapolis Colts released him. Ballentine, 29, made seven starts and appeared in 37 regular-season games and three playoff contests with the Packers from 2022-24. He contributed primarily on special teams last season. '(He's) a guy that's got experience and knows our system not only on defense but on 'we-fense,'" LaFleur said, referring to the nickname the Packers have for special teams. 'Really excited to see him.' ___

4 Cornerbacks That Could Give The Green Bay Packers' Secondary A Lift

The Detroit Lions had the No. 2 passing offense in football last season. Detroit also ranked No. 2 in total offense and No. 1 in points per game (33.2) in 2024. The Lions come to Green Bay in Week 1 of the regular season, where the Packers already have injury issues in the secondary. Green Bay cornerback Nate Hobbs underwent knee surgery on Aug. 2 to repair a partial meniscus tear. Sports Illustrated was first to report the news. Hobbs, who signed a four-year, $48 million free agent contract with Green Bay in March, is expected to miss the remainder of training camp, but could be back for the season opener against the Lions. 'I'm not going to put a timetable on it, but unfortunately he had to have something cleaned up,' Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Tuesday. 'We're hoping to get him back here sooner than later.' Hobbs missed six games with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024 and 16 in the last three seasons due to a bevy of injuries. Cornerback is undoubtedly the thinnest position on Green Bay's roster. Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine are the projected starters with Hobbs out. The top reserves are an inexperienced group that includes Kalen King, Micah Robinson, Bo Melton and Kamal Hadden, along with Corey Ballentine, who played in Green Bay from 2022-'24, then resigned with the Packers on Monday. If the Packers choose to add another corner to the mix, here would be some DOUGLAS Douglas played in Green Bay for 2 ½ seasons from 2021-'23. Douglas led the Packers with five interceptions in 2021, and returned picks against the Rams and Chicago for scores. Douglas wasn't as good in 2022, when he allowed receptions on 67.1% of his targets, up from 50.8% in 2021. Douglas was traded to Buffalo midway through the 2023 campaign, where he played relatively well, but wasn't resigned after last season. The 6-foot-2, 209 pound Douglas turns 31 later this GILMORE Gilmore, a five-time Pro Bowler with 32 career interceptions, could provide a Band-Aid. Gilmore was the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, a two-time, first-team All-Pro and had a respectable grade of 63.9 from Pro Football Focus last season. That ranked 94th out of 222 cornerbacks in football. The downside is Gilmore turns 35 next month and has lost a step — or FULLER Fuller, a third round draft pick in 2016, spent six of his first eight seasons in Washington and the 2024 campaign with Miami. The 30-year-old Fuller has 16 career interceptions and 82 pass deflections. His overall grade of 66.2 by Pro Football Focus last season ranked 75th out of 222 SAMUEL JR. This is probably a longshot, especially for an organization as conservative as Green Bay. Samuel Jr. underwent neck surgery in April, and while he has been cleared to play, teams have been hesitant to bring him aboard. In four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, Samuel Jr. has played well, posting six interceptions and 37 passes deflected. His father, Asante Samuel, was a four-time Pro Bowler and a two-time Super Bowl champ.

An ex-NFL player has been convicted in a dogfighting case. A record number of dogs were taken from him

A former NFL player has been convicted for running an operation that bred and trafficked 'grand champion' dogs and their offspring for dogfighting, the Department of Justice said. LeShon Johnson, 54, a former running back for the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants, was convicted by a federal jury in Oklahoma on six felony counts of violating the federal Animal Welfare Act's prohibitions against 'possessing, selling, transporting, and delivering animals to be used in fighting ventures,' the department said. Following the verdict, the ex-NFLer surrendered 190 dogs from his 'Mal Kant Kennels,' the largest number ever seized from a single person in a federal dogfighting case, officials said. He faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on each count. 'My client respects the verdict,' defense attorney Courtney Jordan told CNN, noting Johnson was convicted of only six of 23 counts. He was acquitted on 17 counts of possessing a dog for use in an animal fighting venture, court records show. 'The jury saw there is more to this story than what the government has made it out to be. He is a family man, a good person who loves his dogs. He was never involved in dogfighting himself, per se,' Jordan said. Johnson's conviction recalls the 2007 federal case against then-NFL quarterback Michael Vick, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy involving illegal dogfighting. Admitting he participated in killing dogs and ran a business that involved illegal gambling, Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison. After his 2009 release, he advocated against dogfighting, returned to the NFL and now coaches a college team. While dogfighting is a felony in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, more than 40,000 people participate in enterprises that breed, condition and train dogs to be 'placed in a pit to fight each other for spectator entertainment and profit,' the Humane Society of the United States and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals say. In Johnson's case, 'the American government is really after the American pit bull terrier, and that's what LeShon Johnson was breading,' his lawyer said. The breed is 'the dog of choice' for fighting in the United States, according to the ASPCA. Johnson had a 2004 state conviction for dogfighting, the Justice Department said. In the federal case against him, Johnson bred and trafficked 'fighting dogs' and their puppies for dogfighting, 'profiting from the cruel and illegal industry,' evidence presented to the jury showed. 'This criminal profited off of the misery of innocent animals and he will face severe consequences for his vile crimes,' Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement. 'This case underscores the Department of Justice's commitment to protecting animals from abuse – 190 dogs are now safe thanks to outstanding collaborative work by our attorneys and law enforcement components.' The federal government is pursuing the forfeiture of the dogs, after which the US Marshals Service would care for them, the department said.
