Rashid Khan's downfall decoded as old ally Jadeja calls it normal in sportsman's journey: ‘Easy for me to sit here…'

Hindustan Times29-04-2025

The IPL 2025 has not been very kind to Rashid Khan so far. The Afghanistan spinner was retained as the first pick by Gujarat Titans over skipper Shubman Gill but in his fourth season with the franchise, his performance has dipped drastically. The 26-year-old has been one of the most impactful bowlers in IPL over the past few years but it seems like after dominating the tournament for almost 8 seasons, he is witnessing a big hiccup this year.
The downhill curve started last year where he finished with 10 scalps in 12 matches at an economy rate of 8.40. However, things have worsened for him as the fear of facing him in the middle no more occurs in the batters' minds as even Vaibhav Suryavanshi,14, didn't have any second thoughts on Monday while smashing him for a six when he was batting on 94.
He has claimed just seven wickets in 9 matches so far this season at an economy of 8.88.
Ajay Jadeja, who worked closely with Rashid during his time on Afghanistan's coaching staff, said that the Titans won't be very worried about his form. Even with him not at his best, they are in pole position to qualify for the playoffs.
"Titans are pretty much at the top while we are talking, second at the moment. So as a team, I think they'd be pretty happy because, in spite of Rashid not having the greatest time that he's had," Ajay Jadeja, JioStar Expert, replied to Hindustan Times query during a selected media interaction on upcoming key clashes as teams race to the TATA IPL play-offs.
However, Jadeja asserted that when Rashid regains his mojo, it will only boost the morale of the Titans, who have been sitting comfortably in second place on the points table.
Somebody who's played for so many years, there'll be a moment where he's at greater times, and still being at the top only gives them more confidence. I look at it that way, that you know, imagine when he starts, you know, getting to the top or delivering what you and I and the fans expect from him on a daily base. So from that point of view, yes, from Rashid's point of view, I think it is easy for us, or at least for me, to sit here and feel he is not doing this well or that well.
The former Indian cricketer shared his thoughts on Rashid's underwhelming form and said every great player experiences a drop in form at some point in their career. He suggested that it is normal for Rashid to be facing struggles, after dominating the game for such a long time, the batters start reading him with the help of analysts.
"I think this will be part of every sportsman's journey, especially people who have had journeys for 10 years, 12 years. And there will be one of those seasons, especially towards the latter hour of that 10-year period, because the opposition also start reading you. There is a little bit of analysis that goes on, I may be a big fighter of these data guys, but, there is something in that you can learn from as well. And I think the other teams are learning to play better," he said.
Rashid's old ally has backed him to bounce back in the later stages of the tournament, specifically in the knockouts, to make things easy for the 2022 champions.
"I'm sure he'll come up with, you know, something new by the end of this tournament. So, you know, imagine a knockout game and suddenly he comes up with a performance that you and I expect or what you are referering to GT would love that, and so would Rashid," he concluded.

IND vs ENG, 1st Test: Former India coach Shastri backs Sai Sudarshan for No. 3 slot

Former India coach Ravi Shastri wants to see Sai Sudharsan make his Test debut and bat at the crucial No.3 position in the series opener against England, also adding that Karun Nair will be ideal in the number five position after an 'incredible' run in First-Class cricket. The first of the five-match series starts in Leeds on Friday in what will be Shubman Gill's first assignment as India captain. 'It would be (Yashasvi) Jaiswal, and with him will be K L Rahul, because I think this is a big tour for him. He's the most experienced of the batsmen,' Shastri said on the ICC Review on Tuesday. 'He (Rahul) opened last time when India toured England, got a hundred, (and) had a good tour. So, I would hope for him to open the innings. 'Three, I'll go with the youngster, Sai Sudharsan. Whatever I've seen of him he's very impressive. This will be good exposure for him, this tour.' The 23-year-old Sudharsan is enjoying a great run of form, having recently become the youngest player to amass 700 runs in a single IPL season after a successful outing in First-Class cricket. In the former India skipper's preferred side for the first Test, the top-three batters are joined by the new Test captain at No.4, having batted at No.3 in his first 32 Test matches. Karun Nair, who returns to the Test team after eight years, should be the ideal choice at No.5 at Headingley based on current form, feels Shastri. ALSO READ: Harshit Rana included as backup in India's Test squad for England tour Besides his 'incredible' run in First-Class cricket, Nair's experience of county cricket also works in his favour. 'In all probability, depending on what the current form is, it'll be Karun Nair. He bats at five, it's a long time since he played for India. Six will be (Rishabh) Pant. 'I think he (Nair) has worked really hard. He's just worked his way back into the side. The number of runs he's got in First-Class cricket is incredible. 'And I met him during an IPL game. I said, 'Don't just bang the door. Just kick it down and make your way in and walk into that side'. And I think he's done just that. Just the number of runs that he's got has made the selectors look in that direction and give him a place,' Shastri added. In terms of bowling, Shastri prefers three pacers considering the conditions in Leeds. 'I know it'll be a tough one between Shardul (Thakur) and Nitish Reddy, but you have to see who bowls how much. If Reddy is going to give you 12, 14 overs, then he might get the nod because of his batting. 'And the three fast bowlers would be, I would go with Prasidh Krishna, I would go with Mohammed Siraj and of course Jasprit Bumrah. 'In Leeds, if it's overcast and it's cloudy, there might be the temptation of going with the left-arm Arshdeep Singh as well. So it will be Prasidh Krishna/Arshdeep, but the other two will be Siraj and Bumrah.' India last won a Test series in England in 2007. (inputs from PTI)

India dealt narrow 1-2 defeat by Australia in FIH Hockey Pro League (Women)

London, June 16 (UNI) The Indian Women's Hockey Team were dealt a narrow 1–2 defeat by Australia in their FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 match at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre here. Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke (3') scored the only goal for India while Amy Lawton (37') and Lexie Pickering (60') were the goalscorers for Australia. India took an early lead in the proceedings but Australia made a comeback with a goal in the third and final minute of the fourth quarter to seal the victory on Sunday. India made a bright start to the game as they won three back-to-back penalty corners in the very first minute, adding pressure on the Australian backline. India carried on their momentum and scored the opening goal as early as the third minute to take charge of the match. Navneet Kaur carried the ball forward and passed it to Sharmila Devi on the left who played it to the far post for Vaishnavi as she deflected the ball into the net. India continued to pile on the pressure as Navneet came close to extending the lead but narrowly missed the target. Minutes later, Australia won two back-to-back penalty corners towards the end of first quarter but India did well at the back to maintain their lead. Australia improved their performance in the second quarter and started creating good goalscoring chances. Both sides exchanged possession and battled it out in the midfield but they couldn't be separated in the second quarter as India headed into the second half with a goal in hand. Australia were more dominant in the third quarter and caused troubles for the Indian defence. Greta Hayes came teasingly close to scoring a goal as she struck a shot towards an empty net, however, the ball was stopped by her own teammate by accident. In the 37th minute, Australia were on the attack again but this time, they managed to find the equaliser courtesy of a brilliant goal from Amy Lawton. Amy did well to win the ball from an India defender and then unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the circle, past the keeper into the bottom right corner. The scores were level as both sides headed into the final quarter of the match. India received a penalty corner but the Australian keeper made a strong save to keep her side in the contest. In the 54th minute, India won four penalty corners in a row but they couldn't manage to find the net. In their third attempt, Neha fired a shot which took a deflection and struck the post, missing the net by a few inches. With 34 seconds left on the clock, Australia converted a penalty corner to complete their comeback in the match. Tatum Stewart played the perfect pass to Lexie Pickering on the right as she took the Indian goalkeeper off-guard and deflected the ball into the net to claim all three points. India next play Argentina on June 17 at the same venue. UNI BM

Ravi Shastri Predicts Indias Playing XI For First Test Against England; Check Whos In, Whos Out

Former head coach Ravi Shastri has given his verdict on India's ideal playing XI for the first Test of the upcoming five-Test series against England, which begins on June 20 at the Headingley Cricket Ground. The newly appointed India captain Shubman Gill and his team face a stiff assignment and Shastri put forward the left-right combination at the top and a debutant at first drop for the first Test against England "It would be (Yashasvi) Jaiswal, and with him will be KL. Rahul, because I think this is a big tour for him. He's the most experienced of the batsmen. He opened last time when India toured England, got a hundred, (and) had a good tour. So I would hope for him to open the innings," Shastri said on The ICC Review. "Three, I'll go with the youngster, Sai Sudarshan. Whatever I've seen of him, he's very impressive. This will be good exposure for him, this tour," he added. The top three are joined by the new Test skipper at No.4 in Shastri's side, with the 25-year-old Gill taking on the role 32 matches into his red-ball international career. Gill was considered unlucky to lose his place in India's XI during the series defeat in Australia, though he returned at No.3 when Rohit was not selected for the final Test in Sydney, filling the hole left by Rahul, who moved up to open. Below the captain in the first Test of the upcoming series, Shastri admits it might be a call based on form heading into the Headingley assignment, but believes in Karun Nair, who also has experience in county cricket, and earned a long-awaited recall. "In all probability, depending on what current form is, it'll be Karun Nair. He bats at five, it's a long time since he played for India. Six will be (Rishabh) Pant," the former India coach said. "I think he (Nair) has worked really hard. He's just worked his way back into the side. The number of runs he's got in first-last cricket is incredible. And I met him during an IPL game. I said, 'don't just bang the door. Just kick it down and make your way in and walk into that side'. And I think he's done just that. Just the number of runs that he's got has made the selectors look in that direction and give him a place," he added. The remaining questions surround the make-up of India's bowling attack. Ravindra Jadeja at No.7 is the side's frontline spinner, with Shastri's biggest decisions surrounding the No.8 spot, and the make-up of the fast-bowling attack. Two fast-bowling all-rounders look to be in a battle for one spot, while a decision between Prasidh Krishna and left-armer Arshdeep Singh could be condition-dependent. "I would go with three fast bowlers, (plus) Shardul Thakur. I know it'll be a tough one between Shardul and Nitish Reddy, but you have to see who bowls how much. If Reddy is going to give you 12, 14 overs, then he might get the nod because of his batting," said Shastri. "And the three fast bowlers would be, I would go with Prasid Krishna, I would go with Mohammed Siraj and of course Jasprit Bumrah. In Leeds, if it's overcast and it's cloudy, there might be the temptation of going with the left-armer Ashdeep Singh as well. So it will be Prasad, Prasid Krishna/Ashdeep but the other two will be Siraj and Bumrah," he concluded.
