World Athletics Indoor Championships: Schedule, start times and how to watch

Independent19-03-2025

Georgia Hunter Bell, Jeremiah Azu, and Molly Caudery will headline British hopes at this week's World Athletics Indoor Championships, with a strong contingent heading to Nanjing.
Building on last week's European Championships in Apeldoorn, the event is a key stepping-stone to the highlight of the season, this September's World Championships in Tokyo.
Hunter Bell will be looking to put the disappointment of the European Championships behind her after illness hampered her preparation and she failed to win a medal in the 1500m, despite being hotly tipped for gold. Team-mate and European bronze medallist Revee Walcott-Nolan will also be in action, as will new 60m European champion Azu, who clocked a personal best of 6.49 seconds en route to winning the title last week.
Caudery is the defending champion in the pole vault and opted to skip last week's event as a precautionary measure, but is in blistering form, having comfortably won the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold in Madrid in late February with a clearance of 4.85m. Her counterpart in the men's event, Olympic sensation Mondo Duplantis, will also be competing for yet more glory in Nanjing.
GB's George Mills, silver medallist in Apeldoorn, will race the 3,000m, while Neil Gourley is in action over 1,500m as both men aim to deprive the all-conquering Jakob Ingebritsen of another double gold over both distances.
When and where is the World Athletics Indoor Championships?
The World Championships runs from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 March at the Nanjing Sports Training Centre in Nanjing, China.
How can I watch on TV and is there a live stream?
In the UK, the Championships will be shown live on the BBC and BBC iPlayer.

I've played with Zidane and Henry but facing Celtic in the Champions League was my most magical career memory

Former France and Lyon hero Gregory Coupet will never forget his visit to Glasgow's East End 22 years ago Lyon legend Gregory Coupet enjoyed a stellar career that saw him win seven Ligue 1 titles and represent his country at the European Championships in 2008. But the 52-year-old is in no doubt about the best experience he ever experienced on the pitch during his 28 years as a professional. ‌ The Frenchman was in his pomp when Lyon travelled to Celtic Park for a Champions League group stage clash in September 2003. ‌ The Ligue 1 powerhouses went into tie off the back of consecutive league titles but were blown away by the Hoops, with goals in either half from Liam Miller and Chris Sutton handing Martin O'Neill's side an impressive 2-0 win, despite Coupet saving a penalty from Alan Thompson. Coupet's team would get their own back on Celtic three months later, with midfield maestro Juninho netting a late penalty in a 3-2 victory to deny the visitors a place in the knockout rounds of the Champions League. And while the former stopper - who won 32 caps for his country and also turned out for Saint Etienne, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain - played in many iconic stadiums around the continent during his illustrious career between the sticks, he says that 'magical' night at Parkhead trumps the lot. Coupet puts the atmosphere generated at Celtic Park ahead of the cauldron of noise that can be heard in Fenerbahce's Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium. Speaking to L'Equipe, he said: "I put Celtic above all because there is a cathedral effect, magnificent chants, no animosity. It's magical." Coupet isn't the only former Ligue 1 star to have some warm words for the famous old ground. ‌ Ex Barcelona, Manchester United and PSG goal machine Zlatan Ibrahimovic described his experience of walking out in Glasgow's East End back in 2001 when he came off the bench for Ajax in a Champions League tie. Reflecting on his career, he said: "I have played in the biggest games of world football. ‌ "But I have never experienced an atmosphere like I did at Celtic Park." Arsenal to sign Chelsea outcast in cut-price £5million transfer

Kepa Arrizabalaga is set to sign for Arsenal in a £5m deal from Chelsea and will provide competition for fellow Spain international David Raya at the Emirates Arsenal are closing in on a cut price £5m deal to sign goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea with the Spain international set to provide competition for compatriot David Raya. Kepa became the world's most expensive goalkeeper when he moved to Stamford Bridge in a £72m deal seven seasons ago from Athletic Bilbao. But he spent last season on loan at Bournemouth, starting all but three Premier League games, after signing a new deal at his parent club that included a £5m release clause and also saw his salary lowered significantly. ‌ Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca does not consider him part of his plans going forward. He played 163 times for the club, keeping 59 clean sheets and winning four major honours. But he last featured for them in 2023 having also been sent on loan to Real Madrid, where he made 20 appearances. ‌ Bournemouth were keen on making his switch to the south coast permanent with head coach Andoni Iraola saying: 'I think it is a matter of negotiating with Kepa himself and with Chelsea. I think both sides are very happy with his loan spell.' However, Kepa, 30, is now set to become the latest player to swap Chelsea for the Gunners. Raheem Sterling spent a difficult spell on loan at the Emirates in the season just passed, alongside former Blues Kai Havertz and Jorginho. The Gunners had initially been keen on Espanyol's Joan Garcia, but he seems increasingly destined for Barcelona. Mikel Arteta's pursuit of a new centre forward continues, meanwhile, with Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres near the top of their wishlist. A deal to sign Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi is also progressing, with the Real Sociedad star having a £51m release clause. Chelsea, meanwhile, have already landed striker Liam Delap from relegated Ipswich Town in what is expected to be another hectic transfer window in West London. And the new addition is set to feature in the controversial FIFA Club World Cup that begins next weekend having not been selected by the England Under-21s for their defence of the European Championships.
