New York Giants 'pleased but not satisfied' with John Michael Schmitz
The New York Giants are hoping that center John Michael Schmitz takes a huge leap in his third professional season. The 2023 second-round pick out of Minnesota had an overall grade of 61.4 from Pro Football Focus last season, ranking him 35th out of 64 NFL centers. The Giants need Schmitz to be more, especially in pass protection. Giants offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo was asked where he believes Schmitz is heading into Year 3. "We saw a big step from him last year, and I think there's more to go," Bricillo told reporters on Tuesday. "I think the one thing people don't realize, he comes from a Big Ten program established in Minnesota, but they still get stronger. He's only 25 years old. He hasn't reached his peak of strength yet. He cares. He's going to keep working and improving his body, which then in turn, hopefully helps him to be a little bit better football player. "But I see a player that's a little more filled out physically and has a little bit more experience. Another year under his belt. So he's done everything we've asked and we're pleased, but my line is 'pleased but not satisfied.'" The Giants don't have much recourse if Schmitz doesn't take that next step. They currently have veteran Austin Schlottmann and Jimmy Morrissey in camp. Right guard Greg Van Roten can also play center if needed. But the fact is, Schmitz has this season to develop. Next year, his rookie contract runs out, and perhaps his Giants' career runs out with it.

According to a report from NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic, San Francisco is among the teams looking to make a preseason trade for a wide receiver. She also named the Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets. "The Jets are among several teams monitoring the trade market for potential wide receiver additions, per sources," Russini wrote. "The 49ers and Vikings are also making calls." As of right now, the 49ers have a few names ready to start the season. Jauan Jennings has been dealing with an injury but will be a big part of the wide receiver room to go along with Ricky Pearsall, and Demarcus Robinson. Jets CB Michael Carter is peaking at the right time
New York Jets cornerback Michael Carter II had an uneven 2024 season. The 2021 fifth-round selection battled multiple injuries last year. Carter missed two midseason contests due to a back injury. He suffered a setback with that injury later in the season, missing two more games. Carter is back healthy and peaking at the right time. The Jets signed Carter to a three–year, $30.75 million contract extension that last September that included $13.61 million guaranteed at signing, making him the highest-paid nickel corner at the time. In Week 2 of the preseason, Carter made an instant impact that proves the Jets are fortunate to have him back healthy. Carter played just four defensive snaps versus the Giants. Though the sample size deserves consideration, Pro Football Focus assigned him an elite defensive grade of 90.4 for his showing. On a third-and-5 in the second quarter, Giants quarterback Russell Wilson completed a swing pass to Devin Singletary. Carter made this outstanding wrap-up tackle to force a punt: The Jets have Sauce Gardner and offseason addition Brandon Stephens at boundary cornerback. Carter is an elite nickel corner who helps complete the Jets defense. In just four plays, Carter reminded the fanbase of his effectiveness.
