Pakistan Cricket Board Exposed! Audit Finds Possible Corruption Worth Crores

News1813-07-2025
PCB under scanner! An audit report has found possible corruption worth millions of rupees in the board, including unauthorised payments to current chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
The Auditor General of Pakistan has exposed several financial irregularities in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) running into several millions of rupees, including via illegal appointments, and contracts.
Irregularities mentioned in the report include a payment of 63.39 million (Pakistani) rupees to the police for meals for providing security during international matches and unauthorized appointment of three coaches in the under-16 age group category at the high performance centre in Karachi for a total salary of 5.4 million rupees. It also flags allotment of ticketing contracts without proper competition.
The report further mentions overpayment to match officials in fees to the tune of 3.8 million rupees and irregular appointment of the Director of Media for 900,000 per month.
The PCB has had two different chairmen in the 2023-24 season — Zaka Ashraf from June 2023 to January 2024 and Mohsin Naqvi from February 2024-present.
The report puts direct spotlight on Naqvi, mentioning unauthorized payments of 4.17 million rupees to him from February to June 2024 as payment of utility charges, POL and accommodation. Naqvi was simulataneously holding the office of Interior Minister of Pakistan and all his benefits stood covered under the law.
The AG also cited many examples of money spent without authorisation: from 19.8 million rupees on diesel for bulletproof vehicles to 22.5 million on hiring of coasters, a 198 million loss due to award of media rights at less than reserved price, and irregular award of international broadcasting rights without transparent competition.
Under his tenure, several coaches and captains have been changed, too. Currently, New Zealand's Mike Hesson is leading the charge with Salman Ali Agha, the T20 skipper. The team is undertaking a camp in Karachi before their tour of Bangladesh next month.
Pakistan and Bangladesh will play three T20Is, starting from July 20, to kick off preparations for the next year's T20 World Cup in India.

Senior Pakistan players 'shocked, felt disrespected' after PCB's move; considered 'rejecting central' contracts: Report

Senior players of the Pakistan Cricket team were reportedly left stunned after learning that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) removed Category A from the central contract, effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were the only two players in Category A last season. The PCB made the announcement on Tuesday, as 30 male cricketers were handed the contract. Babar Azam (L) and Mohammad Rizwan were both not picked for the Asia Cup(AFP) Compared to the previous year's contract list of 27 players, PCB expanded the pool to 30, which included 12 new additions. These players were divided equally into Categories B, C, and D. Notably, no player has been selected for Category A in this cycle. According to a report in Cricket Pakistan, senior players, none of whom were named, "were not only shocked but also displeased, feeling disrespected." It added that these players even vented their frustration with each other in private chats, and a few even considered rejecting the central contract. For the unversed, a player can still represent the country without a central contract. Babar and Rizwan, who were the only players in Category A last season, were demoted to Category B. The players were reportedly made aware of the decision on Monday when an official from the board contacted them. Although the selectors were not present, they did not explain their decision after the official announcement. The report further hinted that there was an impression that "few players got contracts or promotions under the influence of Aaqib Javed and coach Mike Hesson." In fact, questions were raised on the addition of Faheem Ashraf to the list, who only played nine T20Is this year, scoring 97 runs and taking six wickets. However, PCB sources denied the claim of favouritism and stressed "100% merit was followed, and as players' performances improve, their contract categories will also improve accordingly."

Previous govts never paid heed to quality education: Punjab CM Mann

Agency: Chandigarh, Aug 20 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday lashed out at the previous governments, accusing them of never paying attention to imparting quality education to the students. Mann also alleged that instead of imparting education, the government schools were merely mid-day meal centres during the previous regimes. Addressing an event to hand over appointment letters to 271 newly-recruited employees, Mann claimed that earlier the sons and daughters of big leaders studied in convent schools in the hills due to which the government schools were never their thrust areas. In stark stark contrast, Mann claimed, government schools are now being upgraded to 'schools of eminence", adding that it is a proud moment that Punjab has ranked first in the National Achievement Survey conducted by the government of India. He also claimed that 848 students from government schools have qualified for NEET, 265 students cleared JEE mains, while 45 cleared the JEE advanced test. Mann also claimed that they never aspired to join politics but the merciless 'plundering" of the state and its people by the previous regimes forced them to take the plunge. 'These opportunist and greedy leaders ignored the state for their own vested interests due to which people ousted them and paved the way for a new regime to take charge," Mann said. The chief minister also said the AAP government is 'working tirelessly for the development of the state and prosperity of its people", leaving no stone unturned to achieve the goals. Contrary to earlier times when the leaders 'jeopardised" the interests of Punjab, the government today is focusing on the overall growth and prosperity of Punjab, he claimed. Mann also said that the leaders earlier were skeptical of meeting the people, whereas his government is 'working solely on the basis of their feedback". 'Every effort will be made to safeguard the interests of the state and its people by making them an active partner in the socio-economic development of the state," the chief minister said. On employment, Mann claimed the AAP government gave more than 55,000 jobs to the youth during the first three years of its rule. 'The previous governments gave miniscule number of jobs to the youth at the fag end of their tenures. But ever since my first day in office, I made sure that the deserving youth get jobs due to which 55,000 of them have got government jobs", Mann claimed. Mann also exhorted the newly-recruited youth to become an integral part of the government, saying they should serve people with missionary zeal now. The chief minister hoped that the new recruits will use their pens to help the needy and underprivileged sections of society. Imran Khan nominates opposition leaders for National Assembly, Senate

Last Updated: Islamabad, Aug 20 (PTI) Pakistan's incarcerated former premier Imran Khan has nominated ethnic Pashtun politician Mahmood Khan Achakzai as opposition leader in the National Assembly and Azam Khan Swati as leader of the opposition in the Senate. The key positions held by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Omar Ayub Khan and Shibli Faraz fell vacant following their conviction late last month in a case related to the May 9, 2023 violence. Khan, 72, is booked in several cases in Lahore in connection with the May 9 violence, including for allegedly inciting his supporters to attack government and military buildings. PTI secretary general Salman Akram Raja told reporters outside the Supreme Court about the nomination of Achakzai and Swati. 'These two have been nominated by Khan," he said. He also said that Khan asked for five names to decide the opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly, after Ahmad Khan Bhachar was convicted last month in a case related to the May 9 violence. Achakzai is chief of his Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party, which is part of opposition alliance Tehreek-i-Tahaffuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP), also headed by him. Khan also fielded him as presidential candidate of his party against the incumbent Asif Ali Zardari last year. Unlike Achakzai, the nominee for the position of the leader of the opposition in the Senate, Swati, is a senior PTI politician who is considered close to Khan. Khan, who was ousted from office in April 2022, has been in the high-security Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, since August 2023 after being convicted in a corruption case. He faces multiple legal cases, most of them filed after his removal from power. PTI SH GSP GSP view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
