Ellie Kildunne eager to emulate Chloe Kelly and make England rugby team famous

Independenta day ago
World player of the year Ellie Kildunne intends to emulate Lionesses star Chloe Kelly by ensuring her name is printed on fans' shirts following the Women's Rugby World Cup.
The Harlequins full-back is brimming with confidence ahead of her country's quest for global glory on home soil and has taken inspiration from England's footballers retaining the European Championship title.
Arsenal forward Kelly played a starring role in the Euro 2025 triumph in Switzerland after propelling herself into the limelight by scoring the winning goal in the Euro 2022 final at Wembley.
Kildunne is key to the Red Roses' ambitions of lifting silverware at Twickenham next month and hopes the team can follow in the Lionesses' footsteps by becoming household names and raising the profile of women's sport.
'Outside this pub, there are Chloe Kelly shirts being sold on the street,' Kildunne, who is supporting Asahi Super Dry's campaign to have the tournament shown in pubs across the UK, told the PA news agency.
'That's what the Euros have done for the Lionesses and the opportunity we've got with this World Cup is to have Kildunne shirts being sold on the side of the street; for young girls and boys to have posters of Emily Scarratt and Meg Jones on their walls and not just Jonny Wilkinson.
'I'm inspired by the Lionesses and what they've done for women's football and I hope for nothing less (for women's rugby) than what they've been able to achieve so far.'
England launch the World Cup on Friday, August 22 against the United States in Sunderland and will also face Samoa and Australia in Pool A.
The hosts go into the competition as rugby's top-ranked team, tournament favourites and having won the last seven Six Nations titles.
After watching Sarina Wiegman's Lionesses come from behind in each of their knockout matches this summer, Kildunne feels John Mitchell's Red Roses may require similar resilience.
'Their ability to keep on fighting and not giving up is something that inspires a lot of people,' she said.
'As the Red Roses, it's something we can take inspiration from because it's not going to be straightforward, we're going to have to put a lot of graft in.
'I can't go anywhere without someone talking about the Women's World Cup or the Red Roses. We're going to have to get used to it because it's not going to slow down any time soon.'
Kildunne cemented her status as a poster girl for the tournament by being crowned world player of the year following a standout 2024 which brought 14 tries in nine Tests.
The 25-year-old is undaunted by the prospect of increased scrutiny.
'It will add that target on to my back; I see it as pressure but I don't think pressure is a bad thing,' she said.
'I see pressure as as privilege and I definitely think it's a good thing. I use the pressure to challenge myself to exceed people's expectations and to rewrite what people may think I can do and take it to the next level.
'I'm feeling strong and confident – the most confident I've ever felt, so I'm ready and raring to go.'
Kildunne was part of the England team beaten 34-31 by New Zealand in the 2022 World Cup final following an 18th-minute red card for team-mate Lydia Thompson.
'The disappointment and the heartbreak of the last World Cup reignited a flame inside me that I already thought was burning pretty bright,' she said.
'We've learnt so much from that tournament and built so much in our culture that we're in a completely different space.
'It's something that you can rewrite and that's something that we're very much focused on. It's not a revenge story, we're just rewriting.'

Premier League CEO Masters pleads for patience in Man City case

Aug 13 (Reuters) - Premier League chief executive Richard Masters defended the league's judicial process on Wednesday amid criticism over the slow pace of Manchester City's disciplinary case involving 115 charges of alleged financial rule breaches. Speaking at a Premier League season launch event in Liverpool, Masters said that once charges are brought forward, the matter is handed over to an independent panel, which operates autonomously. "It's an independent judiciary essentially," Masters told Sky Sports. "They are then in charge of the process and its timings. They hear the case, they decide the outcome and we have no influence over it or its timing." Masters refrained from speculating on when a decision might be reached, but acknowledged the frustration surrounding lengthy legal processes. "My frustration is irrelevant really, I just have to wait. Legal processes rarely take less time than you anticipated. But we have to be patient," he said. Masters also addressed speculation around staging Premier League matches abroad, after LaLiga's plan for a game between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami received approval from the Spanish football federation (RFEF) on Monday. He said the controversial "Game 39" concept of an extra competitive match hosted outside of Britain remained off the table. "I think that (LaLiga) match that's been talked about, there's a long road to go yet about whether that will actually happen," Masters said. "It hasn't changed our view about matches abroad. We did look at the 39th game way back when with lots of controversy... Our objective at the time was how to grow the Premier League around the world. We've been able to do that through different means," he said. Masters also responded to concerns over the competitiveness of newly promoted clubs, after all three teams relegated last season - Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton - had only just come up. The same thing happened in the 2023-24 campaign when Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United returned to the second-tier after only one season in the top-flight. Masters pointed to success stories like Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Fulham, who were promoted for the 2022-23 season and are "performing extremely well in the Premier League three years later". "It's never going to be easy... The Premier League is becoming more competitive. The Championship is a fantastic division. We want it to be successful. We want there to be an influx of different clubs coming in and out. So it's something we need to keep an eye on." Masters also confirmed that the newly established independent football regulator is expected to begin operations in October or November. "We are the first country, major football nation to be regulated in this way," he said. "The Premier League operates in a global environment. So naturally we have some concerns, but the main thing is that I think the regulator doesn't start from the position that football is somehow broken in this country... "All of the key indicators are really positive for the whole of the pyramid, for the England teams, men's and women's. So, I think there is lots to be really proud about and the regulator should really be intervening where absolutely necessary." The new Premier League season kicks off on Friday when defending champions Liverpool host Bournemouth.

Pep Guardiola could be about to leave new Man City signing with serious concerns

James Trafford broke Championship records between the sticks for Burnley last season and returned to Manchester City hoping to be their long-term No.1 - now a formidable Italian problem could destroy his long-term plans James Trafford didn't walk into Manchester City this summer expecting to oust Ederson straight away. But he must have fancied his chances to get the No.1 shirt in the very near future from the Brazilian who is constantly linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium for the last 12 months. ‌ The Premier League club have yet to receive any contact for their current No.1. But Ederson's name is not often far from the Saudi Arabia conversation while Galatasaray are also interested in him. ‌ Yet now it has emerged that should a late bid come in for Ederson then City will swoop for PSG outcast Gianluigi Donnarumma - that's despite signing Trafford this summer. That's not good news for the England hopeful in a World Cup year. That's for sure. ‌ City brought in former player Trafford from Burnley in a £31m deal after they triggered a clause where they could match Newcastle's offer. They will pay £27m because they had a sell-on clause included in the deal when they sold Trafford to Burnley. Yet now the England international will find himself in a strange position should City sign another goalkeeper. There was a belief that Trafford would be understudy to 31-year-old Ederson this season before taking over next summer should the Brazilian move on. But it appears now City will be signing Donnarumma if they can find a buyer for their current No.1. Italy keeper Donnarumma is just 26 and at the peak of his powers. That would seem like bad news for Trafford, who at 22 will want to be playing. Donnarumma is available this summer after PSG boss Luis Enrique ousted him from his first-team squad despite his Champions League heroics last season. The French giants have spent over £40m on signing Lucas Chevalier from Lille as their new No.1 and Donnarumma has been exiled. The keeper has had an ambition to play in the Premier League and it appears now City would be his likeliest destination if he moves to England. Manchester United have been linked but they have currently no plans to enter into the race for his signature. Despite being booted out of the first-team squad, PSG will want around £30m to sell the Italian No.1 in the next couple of weeks. The keeper is understood to be stunned by PSG's actions. That's despite having just one year left on his current contract and no sign of agreeing a new deal for the last number of months. ‌ He was one of their star performers as they beat Liverpool, Arsenal and Inter Milan on their way to European glory last season. Those around him believe his stats are also much better than the replacement PSG have bought. That also means he wouldn't be coming to City to sit on the bench and where does that leave Trafford? ‌ Being second choice this season to the long-standing No.1 would be tolerable with the knowledge that Ederson is seemingly itching to get a move soon. But he should be seriously concerned if Pep Guardiola goes out and brings in a high-profile keeper just weeks after returning to the club he came through the academy at.
