
Celestial spectacles to light up UAE sky this summer; here's a guide

For those who love stargazing and just soaking up grandeur of the cosmos, this summer promises a visual feast, with celestial spectacles set to light up the sky from June through early September, experts told Aletihad .
Astronomy is more than a scientific pursuit — it is a cultural, personal experience, the team at Al Sadeem Observatory said in an interview with Aletihad . 'Staying engaged with astronomy during the UAE summer is important because it offers a chance to witness spectacular celestial events, including the core of the Milky Way Galaxy, which is visible only during these months,' they said. The astronomical calendar may be packed this season, but the experts said stargazers must be wary of some weather factors that could affect visibility. 'High temperatures often lead to increased humidity and atmospheric turbulence, which can blur or distort the view of celestial objects. In regions like the UAE, dust and haze from desert winds are common in summer and can scatter light, reducing contrast in the night sky.'Clear, dry nights are still possible, they noted; hence, 'planning observations after windy or humid days should be done carefully.'Here are the major upcoming astronomical events to watch for:
JuneThis month features two Moon-Mars conjunctions (June 1 and 30), a full moon on the 11th, and the June Solstice on the 21st. On June 22-23, stargazers will be able to catch a pre-dawn conjunction of the crescent moon, Venus and Pleiades. On June 25, the new moon will be perfect for Milky Way watching; and then, the Bootid meteor shower arrives on the 27th.
July A full moon will be visible on July 11, and the moon links with Saturn on the 16th. A pre-dawn trio — Moon, Venus, and Jupiter — will light up the sky on July 21–22. Meteor showers will peak towards the end of July: Pisces (28–29) and Alpha Capricornids & Delta Aquarids (30–31).The new moon on the 24th will offer clear skies for deep-sky objects.Explaining the impact of lunar phases on stargazing, the Al Sadeem Observatory team said: 'During full moon nights, the moon's brightness significantly illuminates the sky, making it difficult to observe faint celestial objects. In contrast, new moon nights offer the best conditions for stargazing.'
AugustA full moon will be up on August 9, and from 12th to 25th, there will be a morning planet parade (Mercury through Neptune). The Perseid meteor shower will be at their peak from August 12 to 13.The k-Cygnids will be visible on the 18th, followed by a Venus-Jupiter-Moon alignment on the August 19–20.A new moon on August 23 signals an ideal night for stargazing. On the dawn of August 27–28, the Suhail star may be observable.
September On September 7, a full lunar eclipse will be totally visible from the UAE.
Stargazing Tips In the region, studying the stars is deeply rooted in tradition, the team at Al Sadeem Observatory said. 'People have long looked to the skies not just for science, but also for guidance and seasonal awareness.'Spotting the Suhail star, for example, has traditionally marked the end of summer and the beginning of cooler weather, the team said. When looking at the sky, it pays to remember that bright planets often look like stars, the experts said. 'Planets often appear in the night sky as bright dots and can be easily mistaken for stars. To distinguish them, sky map applications like Stellarium or Sky Map can be very helpful.'For the best skywatching experience, choose dark, open locations and allow your eyes time to adjust to the darkness, the experts said. They also highlighted the unpredictability of meteor showers, 'Meteor showers are spontaneous celestial events—while they peak on specific nights, the timing and brightness of individual meteors are unpredictable.'
The sky is full of wonders, Al Sadeem Astronomy said. 'Everyone should have the chance to experience them at least once — both as humans and as passionate sky lovers.'

During the Forum's opening session, TRENDS will present a paper on 'The Role of Think Tanks and Their Contribution to the Development of the Greater Eurasian Partnership', and will also deliver distinguished scientific and knowledge-based contributions in two main sessions on ways to enhance business dialogue between Russia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC); and the role of digital technologies and industrial development in supporting prospects for cooperation. Intellectual Dialogue Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS Research & Advisory, stated that the research tour in Russia aims to enhance global intellectual dialogue and exchange perspectives on current issues, in addition to broadening the scope of research, scientific, and academic partnerships. He noted that the initiative also seeks to support purposeful knowledge and promote a culture of balanced scientific research, while enabling young researchers to participate in international forums and conferences, thereby equipping them with practical experience to lead the future of scientific research. NASA selects six companies to provide OTV studies
NASA will use the findings to guide mission design, planning, and launch strategies, with potential expansion to larger payloads and less risk-tolerant missions. NASA has selected six companies to produce studies focused on lower-cost ways to launch and deliver spacecraft of various sizes and forms to multiple, difficult-to-reach orbits. The firm-fixed-price awards comprise nine studies with a maximum total value of approximately $1.4m. The awardees are Arrow Science and Technology, Blue Origin, Firefly Aerospace, Impulse Space, Rocket Lab and United Launch Services. Joe Dant, orbital transfer vehicle strategic initiative owner for the Launch Services Program at NASAs Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, said: 'With the increasing maturity of commercial space delivery capabilities, were asking companies to demonstrate how they can meet NASAs need for multi-spacecraft and multi-orbit delivery to difficult-to-reach orbits beyond current launch service offerings. This will increase unique science capability and lower the agencys overall mission costs.' Each of the six companies will deliver studies exploring the future application of orbital transfer vehicles for NASA missions. Arrow will partner with Quantum Space for its study. Quantums Ranger provides payload delivery service as a multi-mission spacecraft engineered for rapid maneuverability and adaptability, enabling multi-destination delivery for missions from low Earth orbit to lunar orbit. Blue Origin will produce two studies, including one for Blue Ring, a large, high-mobility space platform providing full-service payload delivery, on-board edge computing, hosting, and end-to-end mission operations. It uses hybrid solar-electric and chemical propulsion capability to reach geostationary, cislunar, Mars, and interplanetary destinations. The second is a New Glenn upper stage study. Fireflys line of Elytra orbital vehicles offers on-demand payload delivery, imaging, long-haul communications, and domain awareness across cislunar space. Fireflys Elytra Dark is equipped to serve as a transfer vehicle and enable ongoing operations in lunar orbit for more than five years. Impulse Space will produce two studies. The company provides in-space mobility with two vehicles, Mira and Helios. Mira is a high-thrust, highly maneuverable spacecraft for payload hosting and deployment, while Helios is a high-energy kick stage to rapidly deliver payloads from low Earth to medium Earth orbits, geostationary orbits and beyond. Rocket Labs two studies will feature the upper stage of the companys Neutron rocket, as well as a long-life orbital transfer vehicle based on its Explorer spacecraft. Both vehicles are equipped with their own propulsion systems and other subsystems for missions to medium Earth and geosynchronous orbit and deep space destinations like the Moon, Mars, and near-Earth asteroids. United Launch Alliance will assess the cislunar mission capabilities of an extended-duration Centaur V upper stage. Centaur would be capable of directly delivering multiple rideshare spacecraft to two different orbital destinations in cislunar space, avoiding the need for an additional rocket stage or orbital transfer vehicle. The studies will be complete by mid-September. NASA will use the findings to inform mission design, planning, and commercial launch acquisition strategies for risk-tolerant payloads, with a possibility of expanding delivery services to larger-sized payloads and to less risk-tolerant missions in the future. NASAs Launch Services Programme selected providers through the agencys VADR (Venture-Class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare Launch Services) contract, which helps foster growth of the US commercial launch market, enabling greater access to space at a lower cost for science and technology missions.
