Two men caught smuggling over 300 exotic animals at KLIA, including blue iguanas and red-eared sliders
KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 — The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) detained two men in an attempt to smuggle hundreds of exotic animals out of Terminal 1 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Wednesday.
During a joint inspection at 6:30am, the enforcement agency found more than 300 exotic and protected wild animals hidden inside the luggage of the two men involved.
In a statement, AKPS said the animal species included blue iguanas, red-eared sliders, Savannah monitors, Nile monitors, common spotted cuscuses, and black-throated monitors.
'Preliminary investigations revealed that both individuals failed to produce any documents, permits, or authorisation letters to export wildlife.
As a result, they were detained under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716) and the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008 (Act 686).
All the wildlife was seized and confiscated for further action, with an estimated total value of approximately RM460,000,' it said.
The integrated monitoring and enforcement operations involving AKPS, the Department of Wildlife Protection and National Parks (Perhilitan), and the Aviation Security (AVSEC) team will be intensified to combat wildlife smuggling and ensure the country's biodiversity conservation is maintained.
'Any possession, transfer, or trade of wildlife without proper authorization is an offence subject to severe legal action,' it added.

According to MBSP, a meeting was held with the business owner involved to gather detailed information about the incident. The council emphasised that a full internal inquiry is underway to address the allegations made in the video. 'MBSP strongly urges the business owner to make an official report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission if there is genuine evidence of corruption involving MBSP staff,' the statement read. The council also reiterated that it does not tolerate any misconduct related to corruption or abuse of power among its personnel. The viral video, which runs for two minutes, features a man alleging that MBSP officers abused their powers at his friend's business premises. Two to enter defence for smuggling 50 rhino horns
KUALA LUMPUR: The Sepang Sessions Court yesterday ruled that the prosecution has successfully established a case against two men accused of smuggling 50 pieces of rhino horn. According to the Wildlife Trade Monitoring Network (Traffic), Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman said the facts suggested both men had control of the vehicle transporting the horns and were aware of its contents, and there was no doubt in the prosecution's case. The duo was charged under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 for the illegal possession of 49 horn pieces from the white rhino and one from the critically endangered black rhino. They were arrested in September 2021 after their lorry was intercepted near Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), and Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) enforcement officers discovered the horns. Both accused, Mohamad Sukry Wahab and Muhammad Hafiszan Naser, initially pleaded guilty but later changed their plea in April last year. Ahmad made his ruling today after reviewing several issues, including the legal interpretation of "keeping" wildlife parts, and whether the accused knew they were transporting horns collected from the airport cargo terminal. The defence is scheduled to present its case on Aug 13 and 14. In March 11, then natural resources and environmental sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said Perhilitan would take proactive measures to combat illicit wildlife trade, including stepping up enforcement at the country's entry points.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the case remains classified as sudden death, Harian Metro reported. 'There is no indication of any criminal activity. From the start, it has been treated as a sudden death case. 'We have the evidence showing that he fell,' Hussein told a press conference at the Selangor police headquarters today. The body of the man, in his 60s, was sent to the forensic department of Sultan Idris Shah Hospital for a post-mortem. In February, a blind elderly man died when he was struck by a train after losing his balance and falling onto the tracks at the Titiwangsa LRT station. Prasarana Malaysia Bhd later said it planned to install platform sensors at LRT stations to enhance passenger safety, particularly for people with disabilities. The company also said it would begin installing platform screen doors at LRT stations, similar to those used in MRT stations.
