Home minister: No complaints against security forces from ‘Turun Anwar' rallygoers proof govt respects right to assemble
He said security personnel carried out their duties with professionalism and responsibility, reflecting the government's commitment to safeguarding the people's right to freedom of expression.
'So far, no complaints have been received. This is clear evidence that the MADANI Government upholds the right to peaceful assembly as enshrined in the Federal Constitution,' he told reporters after attending the Malaysian Volunteer Corps Department (RELA) anniversary celebration at Dataran Kulim here today.
Saifuddin Nasution said it is now up to the opposition to decide whether to continue voicing their demands through rallies or to focus on fulfilling their responsibilities as the opposition bloc.
'They have a choice, either to rally every week or to concentrate on their duties. If they disagree with the government's policies on the economy or welfare, they must present their own alternatives.
'Put forward your proposed policies so that the people can evaluate and make informed comparisons,' he added. — Bernama

Everyone can't be a striker: Johari tells Umno to play as a team ahead of GE16
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — Umno should adopt the mindset and strategy of a professional football team as it gears up for the next general election, said party vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, according to Kosmo! Speaking at the Johor Bahru Umno Division Delegates Meeting today, Johari stressed that success in politics depends on unity and clear roles — much like a football squad working together on the pitch. 'Politics is like football — we can't fight alone. You need strikers, midfielders, defenders, goalkeepers, reserves, and even supporters,' he was quoted as saying by Kosmo! He added: 'If everyone wants to be a striker and score goals, the team will struggle. But if each person plays their part, we can win.' Johari pointed to his own experience in the 15th general election, saying the win in the Titiwangsa parliamentary seat was not his alone. 'The victory in Titiwangsa wasn't just mine — it was a team victory for Titiwangsa Umno,' Kosmo! reported him as saying.

Trump pressures, Delhi holds firm, but state oil refiners quietly pull back after Russian discount dips
Indian officials deny policy change on Russian oil imports Foreign ministry emphasises independent energy decisions Trump has threatened tariffs on Russian oil buyers Russia remains India's top oil supplier NEW DELHI, Aug 3 — India will keep purchasing oil from Russia despite US President Donald Trump's threats of penalties, two Indian government sources told Reuters on Saturday, not wishing to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter. On top of a new 25 per cent tariff on India's exports to the US, Trump indicated in a Truth Social post last month that India would face additional penalties for purchases of Russian arms and oil. On Friday, Trump told reporters he had heard that India would no longer be buying oil from Russia. But the sources said there would be no immediate changes. 'These are long-term oil contracts,' one of the sources said. 'It is not so simple to just stop buying overnight.' Justifying India's oil purchases from Russia, a second source said India's imports of Russian grades had helped avoid a global surge in oil prices, which have remained subdued despite Western curbs on the Russian oil sector. Unlike Iranian and Venezuelan oil, Russian crude is not subject to direct sanctions, and India is buying it below the current price cap fixed by the European Union, the source said. The New York Times also quoted two unnamed senior Indian officials on Saturday as saying there had been no change in Indian government policy. Indian government authorities did not respond to Reuters' request for official comment on its oil purchasing intentions. However, during a regular press briefing on Friday, foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India has a 'steady and time-tested partnership' with Russia. 'On our energy sourcing requirements ... we look at what is there available in the markets, what is there on offer, and also what is the prevailing global situation or circumstances,' he said. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. India's top supplier Trump, who has made ending Russia's war in Ukraine a priority of his administration since returning to office this year, has expressed growing impatience with Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent weeks. He has threatened 100 per cent tariffs on US imports from countries that buy Russian oil unless Moscow reaches a major peace deal with Ukraine. Russia is the leading supplier to India, the world's third-largest oil importer and consumer, accounting for about 35 per cent of its overall supplies. India imported about 1.75 million barrels per day of Russian oil from January to June this year, up 1 per cent from a year ago, according to data provided to Reuters by sources. But while the Indian government may not be deterred by Trump's threats, sources told Reuters this week that Indian state refiners stopped buying Russian oil after July discounts narrowed to their lowest since 2022 – when sanctions were first imposed on Moscow – due to lower Russian exports and steady demand. Indian Oil Corp, Hindustan Petroleum Corp , Bharat Petroleum Corp and Mangalore Refinery Petrochemical Ltd have not sought Russian crude in the past week or so, four sources told Reuters. Nayara Energy – a refinery majority-owned by Russian entities, including oil major Rosneft, and major buyer of Russian oil – was recently sanctioned by the EU. Nayara's chief executive resigned following the sanctions, and three vessels laden with oil products from Nayara Energy have yet to discharge their cargoes, hindered by the new EU sanctions, Reuters reported last week. — Reuters

PM Anwar: Pakatan not taking sides in political ‘love triangle' conflict in Sabah
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 3 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) will not take sides in the political 'love triangle' involving Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Barisan Nasional (BN), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The PH chairman and Parti Keadilan Rakyat president has said that the national coalition will instead play a balancing role between the rival blocs to maintain political stability while avoiding three-cornered contests and preventing further division among allies. 'Love can sometimes hurt,' he said with a smile. 'But that is the meaning of love.' He was asked how PH planned on juggling the 'love triangle' of PH-BN and PH-GRS as two separate but conflicting pacts in the upcoming state elections. Anwar said that discussions are ongoing between the respective committees and it was his hope that they could avoid overlapping candidacies between the three coalitions. 'For now we are trying to secure an arrangement where there is no three-corner fight,' he said. 'But in the case it has to happen, our advice is that probably we will try and refrain from entering this battle to avoid creating division,' he said. When asked whether the situation might confuse voters, Anwar admitted there would be challenges. 'To some areas where there is this conflict, I'm sure it is. This message we have sent to the three parties — PH, BN, and GRS — that our intention is to make sure, if necessary, to secure that sort of understanding, because that is a priority,' he said. 'What is important is for PH to have a constructive goal — to make sure that its presence is to qualify the reformative agenda, and to understand that we need full collaboration of all parties to ensure the stability of a strong state government, which is to me essential to cooperate with the federal government, for the benefit of Sabah and Malaysia,' he said. The prime minister had previously expressed his hopes for a three way pact but Sabah Umno and GRS had refused an alliance after falling out in early 2023.
