Mazda RX-7 Successor And Next Miata Spell Trouble For Toyota's GR Division
Mazda has a rich history of producing compact, fun-to-drive sports cars. Rarely have they been overpowered; instead, the Japanese marque has a knack for crafting sporty cars that emphasize balance and feel.
At the moment, the only modern sports car upholding this legacy is the MX-5 Miata ND, but not for much longer. The latest reports suggest that an RX-7 successor and an all-new Miata will add new, exciting chapters to Mazda's sports car legacy, but one is set to arrive some time before the other.
The beautiful Iconic SP concept shown by Mazda in 2023 will be the basis for what has been dubbed an RX-7 successor, and according to Motor Trend, this rotary-engine sports car is nearly complete. This confirms an earlier report from April that Mazda has made tremendous progress in making the rotary powertrain suitable for production in an era where emissions regulations are much stricter.
"You can expect Iconic SP will be a good successor for RX-7," said Ryuichi Umeshita, Mazda's Chief Technical Officer.
The production sports car is expected to feature an electric motor supported by a dual-rotor rotary engine; the latter will act as a generator, so the sports car won't have issues with range. It should produce around 365 horsepower, but more importantly, Mazda has ensured it can meet emissions regulations. With that sort of power, we can expect a fiery battle with the next Toyota GR Supra.
A potential second powertrain option will be of even greater interest to enthusiasts. This one will use the rotary engine as the primary power source, where it will actually power the wheels, not merely act as a generator.
Umeshita would not confirm the name of the new sports car, but didn't deny the RX-7 or RX-9 names could be used. When speaking about other sports car names from Mazda's past, he said: "There is very little possibility that we will name it Cosmo."
The sporty Cosmo was primarily sold in other markets between 1967 and 1996, with the most recent one being the flagship Mazda in Japan. It's likely the brand wants to reserve the Cosmo's legacy and not simply slap the name onto something much newer and sportier.
Whereas the production version of the Iconic SP could arrive around 2027, the next MX-5 is further away. It will still be a small, nimble roadster with a manual gearbox and a gas engine, likely based on the new Skyactiv-Z engine Mazda is working on, said to be ready in 2027.
Importantly, the Iconic SP and Miata will be separate cars, with Umeshita clarifying that the former won't cannibalize MX-5 sales. The production Iconic SP will be a larger, more expensive model than the Miata, especially because of its electrified powertrain and use of the more complex rotary engine.
Now all we need is for the MazdaSpeed 3 to make a comeback, too, which would mean the brand would have a full lineup of performance cars to take on Toyota's GR division.

Super Formula Champion Sho Tsuboi Eyes Haas F1 Test
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Super Formula driver Sho Tsuboi believes he is close to achieving his lifelong dream of testing a Formula 1 car. Tsuboi is the reigning Super Formula champion who races for Toyota. Apart from winning the Japanese race series title, he also won his third SUPER GT title for the Japanese automaker. More F1 news: How Lewis Hamilton Made the F1 Movie Production More Expensive Given his success on Toyota's roster, Tsuboi hopes for a potential test with Haas F1's older cars. F1 features a Testing Previous Cars program, which allows teams to give drivers the opportunity to run in older machinery to assess their ability to drive the machinery. ho Tsuboi (36) of Japan and VANTEL'S TEAM TOM'S drives on track during the Super Formula Round Seven at Fuji Speedway on October 13, 2024 in Oyama, Japan. ho Tsuboi (36) of Japan and VANTEL'S TEAM TOM'S drives on track during the Super Formula Round Seven at Fuji Speedway on October 13, 2024 in Oyama, Japan. Toyota also lends its facilities for car testing, giving Haas infrastructure and money in its racing pursuits. In return, Haas grants several Toyota-affiliated drivers tests with its cars. Ryo Hirakawa is one of the drivers who was given opportunities with Haas. He is the team's reserve driver for this season and has already gotten two free practice runs. In an interview with Autosport, Tsuboi explained why he believes an F1 test is in his future. "Before I won the Super Formula title, I wasn't really thinking about anything beyond that as I didn't think I'd have other options as long as I didn't win it," Tsuboi told Autosport. "But getting the double title means I've won everything I can in Japanese racing and I can start to consider more possibilities. "Lately Toyota has entered into a partnership with Haas in F1, and it seems the environment is starting to take shape where I could have the chance to drive an F1 car and take part in some testing. "Becoming an F1 driver has been my dream since I was a kid, so I definitely want to drive an F1 car at least once." Tsuboi is riding a wave of belief after capturing the Japanese racing double. His hopes of one day racing in F1 went up after his success this past season, along with Toyota's resurgence in F1. "Of course, my dream was always to succeed as an F1 driver," Tsuboi added. "Winning the double title means it was a year that I took a step towards that goal. "Until that point, it really felt just like a pipe dream, something that I would never be able to grasp, and that I just had to focus on the thing that was right in front of me. That meant my only goal was becoming Super Formula champion. "Winning the championship allowed me to have a new goal beyond that, and the idea of having a chance in F1 as part of Toyota has become a big motivation for me, so I would like to aim for that." While a full-time drive may never come to fruition, Tsuboi should get a chance to drive an F1 soon, and it will come well-deserved, given his racing success. Francisco Lindor Makes Honest Statement After Mets' Loss to Braves originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets looked like they might turn a corner after Saturday's 11-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, but the opposite happened. The club crashed back down to earth with a 7-1 loss to the Phillies on Sunday, a 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Monday, and a 7-4 defeat to the Braves on Tuesday. Advertisement Shortstop Francisco Lindor pulled his weight over that stretch, except for Tuesday. The 31-year-old went 0-for-5 in that game, but went 6-for-13 with two homers, four RBI, and two runs scored in the preceding three contests. Lindor sounded off after Tuesday's loss, via SNY. Apple's more immersive CarPlay is dividing the auto industry
Apple's next-generation CarPlay is splitting the auto world down the middle. Several automakers are eagerly lining up to adopt the newly immersive CarPlay Ultra, which takes over more screens and includes embedded vehicle features like speedometers, heating and cooling, and radio functions. Others are flatly refusing to allow it, while the rest are taking a wait-and-see approach. All this comes courtesy of a report in the Financial Times, which previews Apple's rough road ahead as it pushes adoption for its splashy, more demanding phone projection system. As The Verge reported back in 2022, when Apple first revealed its more expansive CarPlay, most automakers were hesitant to commit to letting CarPlay gobble up all the screens in their cars. And unsurprisingly many are still wary of handing over too much real estate to the tech giant. Here's where each of the automakers currently stands on CarPlay Ultra: We're still missing some big ones, like Volkswagen and Toyota, two of the biggest automakers in the world. I've reached out to both and will update this post if I hear back. CarPlay Ultra is a huge challenge for the auto industry. Multiple surveys show that customers love it, frequently use it over their car's embedded systems, and would be less likely to buy a future vehicle that didn't allow CarPlay. But automakers are spending huge sums of money on developing next-generation software systems that allow over-the-air updates and address their customers' appetite for more digital services. And they're reluctant to just let Apple slap their own software on top of that. Sources tell the Financial Times that automakers are eager to set clear standards about data sharing with Apple before agreeing to allow CarPlay Ultra.
