'I built Ikea's Billy bookcase in 9mins - men always make the same mistake with flatpack'

A woman has been crowned Flatpack World Champion at the Grand Designs Live show in London. The DIY expert from Wigan gives her tips on how to successfully assemble furniture – and reveals what men got wrong in the competition
A woman who can build a Billy bookcase in under nine minutes has been crowned the first ever Flatpack World Champion – and claims she won because men never read the instructions.
'It was such a brilliant day and I am absolutely thrilled,' says Hayley McAuley, 37, from Wigan, who was awarded a golden Allen key by Grand Designs Live host Kevin McCloud.

Up against blokes who fancied themself as DIY experts, Hayley says, 'They were putting things in the wrong places. And some of them were missing screws and lots of them didn't even finish.

'There was a guy next to me on my first build, one of his pieces was missing and he was looking for it, it was sitting by me, so I picked it up and gave it to him!'
The Flatpack World Championships, which is in its first year, saw eight competitors speed build flatpack furniture at the opening of Grand Designs Live at ExCel London on Friday.
The contest was split into two timed rounds and involved participants making Ikea Billy bookcases – and then in the final making a bedside table. Ikea says its Billy bookcase takes an hour to build for most people, but Hayley managed it in under nine minutes.
Then the flatpack queen took just nine minutes and 33 seconds to build the bedside table – quicker than most people take to realise they're missing a lock nut – and demolished her male opponent.
'Kevin was trying to talk to me but I was so focused on doing my job,' she says, and admits it was nerve-wracking building in front of a big audience at the show. 'It was a lot of pressure, I mean, I was shaking.'

It was the first time Hayley had been to Grand Designs Live, and she made a trip of it by coming down for the day from Wigan and staying overnight. She says, 'When I first heard about the competition from my friends, I jumped at the chance to enter as I've always thought I'm a bit of a machine when it comes to building flatpack furniture.'
Factory worker Hayley loves assembling furniture so much, she even does it professionally now as Hayley's Flatpack Assembly Service after posting pictures of her own self-assembled furniture on social media.

Hayley, who lives with her bricklayer partner Martin, is now currently building a shed, but says she's always been handy with an Allen key.
'When I was a child I went to Lake District with my mum and dad and I built our six-man tent! My dad says I once came in from playing and he was building a wardrobe, and apparently I stood there for a couple of minutes then said, 'It's on upside down that.'
And Hayley revealed the secret of her success. 'Read the instructions. Not doing so sets you up for failure. And get all your screws and everything out together and ready. It's all about staying calm.'

But even Hayley has found her build nemesis. 'I tried to build a kids trampoline in the rain once – and it's not difficult, but it was hard work.'
Grand Designs Live host Kevin McCloud congratulated Hayley, saying, 'It was great fun and hugely amusing. And wonderful to see who took this seriously, and who accidentally sabotaged their own attempts to win!'
There's no doubt this will turn into a very popular annual event, and already Hayley is planning on wiping the floor with the blokes again. 'I will definitely be there. It was such a fun day,' she laughs.
This is the 20th Grand Designs Live and the show runs until Monday May 5.

Topshop is returning exclusively to this iconic London department store next week

Topshop is officially back from the dead. While it's not kicking IKEA out of its original flagship store just yet, the fashion brand is setting up shop just down the road at Liberty, one of London's most famous department stores. Manifesting in physical form for the first time in four years, Topshop and Topman's new fashion edit, curated by both retailers, will be available in store at the iconic Tudor building in Soho from August 28. It'll feature an exclusive new clothing line with directional tailoring, cult denim, statement dresses and everyday essentials. Founded in 1964, Topshop became a UK high street fashion favourite thanks to its trendy designs and accessible pricing. But the brand was forced to close all physical stores in 2021 after its parent company Arcadia Group struggled with financial difficulties and ultimately collapsed. Since then, Topshop's clothes have only been available at online fashion retailer ASOS. Commenting on Topshop's IRL retail return, managing director Michelle Wilson said: 'We're thrilled to return to UK stores through Liberty. This launch is about reconnecting with our community in real life, and we're excited to kick things off with a full Liberty atrium takeover.' Topshop celebrated the brand's relaunch at a runway event at Trafalgar Square on August 16. Celebs in attendance included supermodel Cara Delevingne, actress and model Adwoa Aboah, and the fashion guru himself, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. With the National Gallery as its backdrop, the catwalk featured sequin maxi dresses, red leather jackets, cream knit jumpers, and brown fur coats. At the event, Delevingne – who will be fronting the 40-piece edit – told Sky News that the new fashion edit felt like 'nostalgia mixed with something eclectic but also something brand new'.

Northern Ireland native Billy and cabin crew manager Ashleigh hit it off straight away in the pods, but doubts are already starting to creep in for Billy over Ashleigh's job, which requires her to travel frequently. Fans say they noticed "strange" behaviour during their food shop when Billy admitted to Ashleigh he prefers a routine when it comes to food and would not want treats added to the shopping list. This did not go down well with Ashleigh who confessed she was felling "overwhelmed". Later scenes also saw Billy admitting he was now feeling "50/50" on his potential marriage. Taking to X, one fan said: "Red flag that Billy, fighting over her having snacks in the house? REALLY?" Another wrote: "That grocery store scene was a huge red flag. Billy is insane. He won't let Ashleigh buy onions? Goodbye." ‌ A third added: "Okay Bill is p***** me off! You're waving a red flag here, let her eat her cakes!" Tbf though Billy was a giant red flag during that and I would have cried too." ‌ Another fan said: "I appreciate that Billy is saying he's willing to change about how he speaks about food around her & doesn't want her to feel guilty for having sweets in the house, but I wonder if he'll be able to practice what he preached cause he is SO regimented, change is hard." Fans have also worked out what will happen for the couple when it comes to their wedding day, and it's not looking good. One person wrote: "I feel like Billy is gonna say no." Another predicted: "Billy and Ashleigh will not get married." A third penned: "Poor Ashleigh just got blindsided that Billy is 50/50 on getting married to her. If he's that undecided so close to the Wedding… yeah he's gonna say no at the altar." In an explosive first look ahead of next week, Billy can be heard making a startling confession to his mum. Speaking to her on the couch, in his wedding suit, armed forces instructor Billy can be heard saying: "To be honest mum I do have to be selfish up there. I hope she can forgive me."
