HSL ship repair complex witnesses surge in dockings
The transformation of the complex stems from a renewed focus on timely delivery, customer-centric processes, operational efficiency and business process re-engineering. Currently, four ships are undergoing repairs at the repair dock of HSL -- ICGS Sarang, SCI Sabarmati, MV Tharangini, and Matsya Drushti. These vessels represent a healthy mix of defence, commercial, and scientific maritime assets, a testament to HSL's versatile capabilities and its growing profile across sectors. The pipeline for the upcoming months is equally packed, with INS Jamuna, RV Sagar Kanya, MFV Samudrika and Matsya Darshini already scheduled for dry-docking.
'The turnaround is a direct result of our commitment to timelines, quality workmanship, and transparent engagement with clients. Ship owners who have experienced our performance are now proactively lining up their vessels for repairs with us,' said a senior official at HSL.
In fact, the demand has grown to a point where HSL is experiencing constraints in providing adequate berthing space for incoming ships. To address this, HSL is entering into a tie-up with its trusted and long-standing partner Visakhapatnam Port Authority to secure alternate berths for handling the growing inflow of vessels. This strategic move ensures that HSL continues to deliver on-time results without compromising on quality.
As HSL steps into its Sapphire Year this 21st June, the SRC's resurgence adds a compelling chapter to the shipyard's journey.

1 2 Visakhapatnam : Gaiety and pomp marked Independence Day celebrations at public sector units (PSUs) in Visakhapatnam. The Tricolour was hoisted at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Vizag Steel Plant (VSP), Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL), Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) and other institutions. Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) chairman Dr Angamuthu assured the people of Visakhapatnam that the port, in close coordination with the state government and local authorities, is working diligently to combat pollution and improve living conditions in the city. Highlighting the port's performance, he noted that VPA achieved its highest-ever cargo handling in the last financial year and expressed confidence in maintaining the momentum this year. Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL) MD and CEO Durgesh Kumar Dubey said the company successfully executed several critical dredging assignments at major Indian ports—including JNPA, Cochin, Paradip, SMP Kolkata, VPA—and inland dredging works in the North-East during FY 2024–25. Further fortifying its leadership in the maritime sector, DCIL recently secured new dredging contracts for prominent ports such as JNPA, Paradip, and Puducherry, setting the course for sustained growth in the years ahead. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) Visakha Refinery executive director (in-charge) R Ramakrishna, along with CGM (HR) G Kiran Kumar, stated that the mega Visakh Refinery Modernisation Project, which will increase refining capacity to 15 MMTPA, is progressing as planned. They mentioned the smooth commissioning of the new units on time. Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, director (Personnel) Dr Suresh Chandra Pandey highlighted recent developments at the plant. He stated that the restart of Blast Furnace-3 marks a significant milestone—not merely an operational success, but a testament to resilience and unwavering determination to progress. The CMD of EPDCL, Prithvitej Immadi, stated that the company has been providing uninterrupted power services with the highest quality standards to 7.3 million consumers within its jurisdiction. Transmission and distribution losses have been reduced to less than 5.8%, positioning the company at the forefront nationwide. He mentioned that free electricity has been provided to 23,024 houses in PVTG tribal areas, 1,979 houses under the DA-JGUA scheme, and 13,000 non-PVTG houses. Under the Prime Minister's Surya Ghar Yojana, 63.522 megawatts of solar rooftop systems have been installed on 19,385 homes, leading the state. As part of the RDSS scheme, new feeders have been established with an investment of Rs 3,004 crore for 24x7 three-phase power supply to rural areas, and 33 kV and 11 kV underground cables are being installed across Visakhapatnam city. HSL delivers ICGS Sarang after complex life extension refit
Visakhapatnam: Hindustan Shipyard Limited successfully delivered the 27-year-old vintage vessel ICGS Sarang on August 14 (Thursday) after completing a complex life extension refit three days ahead of schedule. The vessel was docked at HSL on April 19. During execution, an unexpectedly large volume of additional work, about 35 percent more than the original scope, emerged, along with the need to source numerous additional spares. Ensuring strict adherence to timelines, the tasks were undertaken on a war footing in close coordination with the Indian Coast Guard and with the business partners Asha Engineering Works. Key works included replacing stern tube and 'A' bracket bearings, renewing shaft tunnel hull boss plates without propeller shaft removal, and installing nine new pumps with successful trials. Routines covered machinery, AC and refrigeration, fire-fighting, and fuel systems along with renewing 12 tonnes of steel, overhauling 140 motors, 300 valves, 46 pumps and replacing 3-km of pipelines. Delivering ahead of schedule showcases HSL's prowess in complex refits, powered by skilled manpower, efficient project management and seamless coordination with ICG and business partners.
