Masterton residents can now see the vision for their district's library, as the first architectural images of the refurbished Masterton District Library are released.
The images showcase a modern, light-filled space that blends functionality with inspiration – revealing how the ambitious $10.75 million refurbishment and extension will enhance the community's use of the library.
The images highlight:
a modern extension and expansive, light-filled interior spaces designed for flexibility
purpose-built areas for community programmes, events, and creative collaboration
a layout that maximises accessibility and offers many spaces to learn and connect.
The enhanced library will feature a community classroom and lounge, meeting rooms, coffee kiosk, dedicated workroom, and dynamic open-space office, transforming it from a traditional book repository into a true community hub.
With contractor procurement planned to start in September and construction beginning in late 2025/early 2026, the project is expected to be completed in Spring 2027.
During the construction period, library services will continue at a temporary location to be confirmed in coming weeks.
The Council is collaborating with local iwi to create a stunning facility that celebrates Masterton's cultural identity, including integration of te reo Māori throughout signage and navigation.
The $10.75 million investment, approved as part of the Council's 2024-34 Long-Term Plan, represents a major commitment to the District's cultural and educational future, Mayor Gary Caffell said.
'The images we're releasing today represent more than just a building upgrade – they show our commitment to creating a vibrant hub with creativity, learning, and community connection at its heart,' Masterton Mayor Gary Caffell said.
'While we understand the temporary move may require some adjustment for our regular library users, we're confident the end result will exceed expectations.
'This isn't just a library renovation – it's an investment in a vital community space where knowledge is shared, and the community thrives together.'

Council Confirms Parking Permit For Tauranga City Centre Fringe
Tauranga City's Mayor and Councillors have approved the introduction of a new city centre fringe parking permit. The decision made at Tuesday's Council meeting, will give people an option to buy a permit, permit holders can park in the purple city centre fringe paid zone without needing to pay daily at machines or via the parking app. The permit pricing is set at $150 per month, $750 for six months, or $1,500 for a full year. Residents within the city centre fringe paid zone are eligible for an 80% discount on a one-year permit, bringing the total cost to $300. Resident discounts are limited to one per property. While holding a permit does not guarantee a parking space, the reduced cost - when compared to paying daily - will support regular city centre commuters and give residents more flexibility to park on their street at a discount. Tauranga Mayor Mahé Drysdale sees the permit as a solution to some of the concerns he and Councillors have heard in the community and underlines the need to keep exploring other possibilities. 'This is a way to ease the financial pressure of paid parking and gives people who live or work in the area, as well as people that park there all the time, an option for a discount for longer term permits,' says Mahé. 'We will continue looking at innovative ways to make visiting and parking in the city centre easier for our community.' The PMP aims to improve access to short-stay parking, and balance increased demand across the city centre and city centre fringe with new paid and time- restricted zones, and changes to off-street pricing.
