Manipur Police file FIR after gun salute conducted in Kangpokpi district
The Manipur Police on Saturday filed a case against unidentified persons after a gun salute was organised in Kangpokpi district's Saikul.
The event was held to remember the victims of the ethnic conflict that began exactly two years ago between the Meitei and the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar communities, NDTV reported. The ethnic conflict has since left at least 260 dead and displaced more than 59,000.
'Local leaders and elders were summoned to police station,' the police said in a statement on X about the event on Saturday. 'Raids have been conducted at different areas to arrest the miscreants.'
The police said that five single-barrel guns and camouflage uniforms were seized from the area.
'Raids will continue to arrest the miscreants and seize the other guns,' the statement said, adding that organisers of the event would be 'dealt as per law'.
An unidentified police officer told NDTV that the carrying of firearms and the gun salute violated the permission granted by authorities to hold the event. The officer added that no violation of the law or show of firearms would be tolerated in view of the imposition of the President's Rule in the state.

Panaji: The police have recovered whale vomit, or ambergris, valued at about Rs 10 crore from three persons in South Goa, an official said on Friday. Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a car in Sanguem village on Thursday and seized 5.75 kg of the waxy substance, which is used in the perfume industry, he said. Ambergris is produced in the intestines of sperm whales, which are protected under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act, meaning any trade or possession of their byproducts is prohibited in India. A police spokesperson said the whale vomit could fetch about Rs 10 crore in the international market. The trio, identified as Sainath Shet (50) and Ratnakant Karapurkar (55) of Goa and Yogesh Redkar (40) from Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, have been arrested, he said, adding that a probe is underway to ascertain the source of the ambergris. "Siddaramaiah Responsible For Crowd Surge": HD Kumaraswamy On Stampede Deaths
Bengaluru: Karnataka minister HD Kumaraswamy has squarely blamed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for the stampede in Bengaluru that claimed 11 lives, citing alleged administrative lapses and politically motivated interference in the event organisation. "Chief Minister responsible for crowd surge, cops did everything they could," Mr Kumaraswamy told NDTV. The stampede occurred on the evening of Wednesday, 4 June, when a massive crowd gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to attend a felicitation event for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team following their Indian Premier League (IPL) championship victory-their first since the league's inception 18 years ago. Tens of thousands arrived at the gates, far exceeding the stadium's official capacity of 35,000. "But who gave permission to hold the event in front of Vidhana Soudha before that? Who sought the permission? Who granted it? It was the ministers from this government, their family members, and MLAs who were gathering there. Clashes started right there. Some people began throwing chappals and stones. That also happened," Mr Kumaraswamy told NDTV. He further claimed that the earliest signs of unrest and overcrowding occurred by 3:10 PM, with reports of clashes and objects such as footwear and stones being hurled. Despite this, Mr Kumaraswamy alleged, the programme continued at Vidhana Soudha until 4:00 PM. "Even after receiving the news, Shri Siddaramaiah went with his grandson to a hotel. They were happily enjoying masala dosa. Bodies were lying on the street - 11 of them. There was no courtesy shown to visit the area immediately. At the hospital, more than 30 to 40 injured persons had been admitted. He was enjoying with his family even after such an incident had taken place," the former Karnataka Chief Minister claimed. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah rejected the accusations, accusing the opposition of politicising a tragedy. Responding to Mr Kumaraswamy's allegations, Mr Siddaramaiah said: "The BJP is just doing politics, we won't do politics. Those who are responsible and those who didn't do their job, we have taken action against them." Mr Siddaramaiah on Thursday suspended Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda and several other senior police officials in connection with the stampede. The government also instructed the Director General and Inspector General of Police (DGP & IGP) to arrest representatives of RCB, the event management firm DNA Entertainment Pvt Ltd, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), citing evidence of negligence. According to police, celebrations had erupted late Tuesday night after RCB's victory, with fans thronging central Bengaluru locations such as MG Road, Church Street, UB City, and Vittal Mallya Road. Police deployment continued until early Wednesday morning.

50,000 'Ghost' Employees And Rs 230 Crore Salary Scam In Madhya Pradesh
Bhopal: The salaries of 50,000 government employees, that is nearly nine per cent of Madhya Pradesh's government taskforce, have not been paid for over six months. It is a mystery buried deep in the state's bureaucratic files, but it may be one of the biggest salary scams in Madhya Pradesh's history. NDTV has accessed documents revealing that these employees exist in official documents. They have an identity -- name and employee code -- but for some reason, their salaries have not been processed for nearly six months. Are these employees on unpaid leave? Are they suspended? Or are they simply 'ghost' employees? Unfolding The Salary Scam NDTV has obtained a letter dated May 23, sent by the Commissioner of Treasury and Accounts (CTA) to all Drawing and Disbursing Officers (DDOs). The letter is a call to investigate a startling anomaly. "The data of Regular / Non-Regular employees under IFMIS, whose salaries have not been drawn since December 2024, is enclosed... although employee codes exist, their verification is incomplete in IFMIS, and the Exit process hasn't been done either." Following the letter, over 6,000 DDOs are under scanner and have been asked to explain the possible Rs 230 crore fraud in 15 days. The timeline will be over today. "We conduct data analysis regularly and this discrepancy was observed. I further clarify unambiguously that its not that salary is being drawn against these accounts. This inquiry tries to curb the risk of probable embezzlement which may occur," Commissioner of Treasury and Accounts Bhaskar Lakshkar told NDTV. The treasury department has launched a statewide verification drive, ordering every DDO to certify that no unauthorised employee is working in their office. "There could be genuine cases - transfers, suspensions... But if someone hasn't received salary for six months straight, and their exit isn't processed either, that's a red flag," said a senior finance official. Finance Minister Cornered NDTV approached Madhya Pradesh's Finance Minister Jagdish Devda with the facts. When confronted with the question: "50,000 salaries not drawn for months. Why?" Mr Devda appeared visibly uncomfortable and said, "Well... whatever process is followed, it is done according to rules." When asked again whether this could be a problem in the future, he repeated - "Whatever happens, will be according to rules... okay... fine." And then, without another word, he walked back inside. Large-Scale Fraud Or Ghost Postings: Why We Need To Get To The Bottom Of It Of the 50,000 employees who haven't been paid, 40,000 are regular employees and 10,000 are temporary staff. Collectively, their salaries mount up to Rs 230 crore. Since salaries haven't been drawn for months, suspicions of a large-scale fraud or ghost postings are growing stronger. Where are Rs 230 crore? If even a fraction of these 50,000 are ghost employees, it raises troubling questions: Who is manipulating the system? Can salaries be backdated and withdrawn without checks? Has the government unknowingly allowed space for a Rs 230 crore scam to fester? Are these 50,000 positions open? If yes, how has been departments functioning without 9 per cent of its staff? A lot of questions remain to be answered as this scam unfolds layer by layer. Though, in a display of timely vigilance, the state's treasury flagged a potential discrepancy during a routine data audit - and in doing so, may have averted a major financial risk. The objective of the investigation is simple yet crucial - to verify whether ghost employees are quietly lurking in the system.
